You know we got a hardware section right?
Oh and if you are on a budget, get the i5-2500k.
For gaming you barely will notice diffrence between both, even tho you save almost $100

Why upgrade that system? It's too expensive to upgrade from i7 to another i7 which is a ittle faster. (and uses a different socketing)
Its your business but I wouldn't upgrade the cpu. If I really have to upgrade smthg in that config is the vidcard.
But still...even the vidcard is more than enough (if you are not into gaming at 2330321x231321312 resoultion)

The diffrence on stock is about 15-20% increase, BUT you can OC the new cores ALOT better (if you get k) and thus get even more out of it.

Yeah, i know about that. I was stating that nowdays i7 with that "speed" is enough for gaming.
I didn't consider temperature, overclocking (and not considering: "I want more Mhz/Ghz displayed on screen")

not overclocking, underclocking you meant.
this system has been showing it's age a tiny bit lately if i'm honest, still got around 30-40 frames a second with the batman arkham city game DX9 with everything on high and in 3D but... i could be getting 60-70+ frames a second if not for the underclocking on the CPU creating a bottleneck.

Uhm, there is ONLY an i5-2500k or i7-2600k (the i7 version is the followup), there is no i5-2600k or i7-2500k (it goes from i5-2400, i5-2500, i5-2500k, i7-2600, i7-2600k) and the main diffrence is that the i7 has Hyper-Threading (wich you don't need for gaming)
If you don't do video editing and converting blabla then the i5-2500k is more then sufficient enough to last you a couple of years.

Have you tried using a different cooler? Reapplying the thermal paste?
I have a Q9550 running at 3.6Ghz and no heat problems running below a rather small Noctua NH-U9B.
I have not felt the need to upgrade yet, and will most certainly wait for Ivy-Bridge to show up next year before considering new Hardware.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

just the stock one and this aftermarket one, the one i bought after came with one of those butter pad adhesive backed thermal paste pads but i put antec artic silver on it.
i'm kind of not sure whether it's the cooler or the CPU either, i mean.... i know these CPUs are infamous for running warm to nearly molten especially the old ones like i have, it does seem a bit excessive that i'm using (what i hope/think) is a pretty nice CPU cooler and nicer than average thermal paste and it still runs a little warm without downclocking, i do smoke in the room this computer is in, i'm still thinking it can't really be a bad idea to upgrade the CPU and motherboard though as i really hate the BIOS (it's chicken scratch engrish translation) because it's so poorly documented in the manual and the BIOS itself as well and i kinda was kicking myself for not buying an ASUS motherboard before i even really had the gigabyte one for long.

in how long until all the stuff that starts up with windows and windows becomes responsive after you log in i mean it used to take like a good 10 seconds or so until everything was loaded and it got up to speed when windows starts.

Don't 2400, and you say that you won't overclock but what's the point in getting sandybridge then?
The k version of the 2500 is only €10,- more expensive, plus its SAFE to OC it even with stock cooler to atleast 3.8-4.0 GHz, without a change in voltages or what so ever.
Don't limit yourself by being affraid to OC, werelds opened my world with OCing, and on SB its safe as fuck.
