I played a mage up to level 32 and was bored by pointing and killing. Im having way more fun with my new Orc warrior and the game is harder now also (and thats a plus - how people can say mages suck confuses me).
There are two kinds of people I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.
Anyways, don't want to argue. There are enough topics on that matter in almost every Skyrim related forum. One side claims it's the games fault and they are too weak and the other claims it's the players fault by doing it wrong.
Important thing is that editing your existing character can/will cause problems. Your character visuals may become faulty and your skills/perks all scrambled. There is no editor as far as I know and I don't see one on the horizon since the CK still isn't out yet.
Best way would be to do it yourself by removing all your skills and perks via console and adding them anew. I don't see any other way atm.
Ok, can anyone recommend a char editor of some sort or what I can do to turn my lvl 29 pure destruct/conjuration mage into a warrior or at least a battle caster?
I can't take this anymore. Usually mages are good, but in Skyrim, they plain suck compared to any melee class.
Right now, I got my destruct skill at 75 and got the wall of flame/thunder/ice etc, got my entire destruct tree almost maxed out, and about 50 in conjuration, I can summon the ice autronach, who isn't bad but takes up a TON of space in any dungeon and makes moving a pain.
But that's not my biggest grief. I fucking hate how every time there's a big fight, I die in 1-2 hits from almost ANY mob in the game, my followers are just fine and dandy, even the mages, but not I.
Basically I feel like I'm cheated out of most of the fun in the game. I do some smithing, but it's only for gold trinkets so I can sell them, I can use NOTHING forged.
And get this, the BEST summoning spell right now comes from a STAFF I got from a Daedra (The Sanguine Rose) which summons a daedra lord to fight along side of me.
What the hell did I spend all those skill points for in Conjuration?!?
My mana is > 350 now, but I run out of it in an instant if I start casting and MOST fucking spells don't do shit against tougher enemies.
My biggest hitters are the daedric summon staff and Wabbajack, another staff which does some great damage sometimes...
But my BIGGEST problem is the CONSTANT switching I have to do with the spells (since I play with a gamepad). The quick menu has no categorization
So that's it, I want to become a warrior, what's the best way? Anyone tried this mid game?
I know the console commands, but would be easier if there's an editor of some sort. Thanks.
The problem is that you just broke your character because you skilled wrong. Maybe even leveld up to fast because of crafting skills so you've ended up with a high level but low skill in your damage/defense trees.

Oh that sounds really shitty :/ I actually "just" started playing as a warrior and after seeing some cool youtube videos I wanted to start from the beginning as mage :O
Don't be fooled, mages are very powerful. Imho way stronger than melee (Try out melee on "Master" and then mage). You just have to skill and set perks the right way. Also you have to play like a wuss since mages are wusses. Like all ranged combat pussies
Actually I did everything to a T to make a mage, following a mage guide at that.
I never went smithing and never put skill points into any other trees except destruction/conjuration.
My destruct is at 75, which is not low. I can use most spells now, except Master level.
I got all the right perks. The spells still suck.
I see my followers destroying mobs left and right with a good 2h or even 1h daedric weapon, while I have to cast 3-4-5 spells and run out of mana and have to run back and use a bow or run away.
Especially after reading comments here about people 1-2 hitting MOST mobs. YOu get NOTHING like that as a mage.
Also I noticed that sometimes, my spells will kill a weak mob in a few hits, but other times, i have to cast the same spell 4-5 times to have the same effect.
So there's definitely something wrong imho.
Post your stats for lvl 29 mage btw, if you think I did so badly.
PS
Yeah I figured I'll use the showracemenu command to change my race too and that will auto reset all my skills, then I'll be an Nord warrior

Thought about doing this? (Just an example, since even Sabin mentioned casting spells 4 free a couple of pages back).
*EDIT*
Oh and btw, after you used showracemenu, your racials are gone. But no worries, just save after you're done and "exit back to the main menu" and load the save again. Your racial spells/powers should be back again.
Now THAT ^^ is a mage. 650+ magicka, pure armour enchants giving SICK bonuses (even just one -27% Demolition cost is awesome, let alone FOUR, and those +60% faster regen? Delicious! I use those on my ROGUE ffs, simply because it's too awesome not to) and great use of AOE DOTs. I'm impressed

That's what I meant. You just have to think about it a little deeper. Get the right gear, skill the right way and get the right enchants and such... somewhat like perfecting your gear and talent-trees in an MMORPG to be fine in raids.
Shit, I don't even play as a Mage.. but that video has certainly made me envy it
Friend of mine started anew when he was lvl56 and rolled melee because mage was too easy and boring according to him (Played on Expert). I wouldn't be surprised if he came up with something similiar like the guy from that video. (Since he's a long time WoW raider)

Ok .......
Thanks Method. Made me think over my orc zerker until I try this thing.
One thing I don't understand is how this guy got 100 smithing/100 enchant being ONLY level 37.....
I noticed my main mistake was just going with the plain crappy mage robes, instead of enchanting each item....
I'll correct that....
Ok will be back to share my experience. Thanks again for the video, certainly looks easy to add to my current char.
29 lvl and 320 mana? WHAT? i have more than that and my mage lis kike lvl 16.. and there are those mage armor thingies too, especialy if you wear no armor ( aka just robes, too bad mask counts as light.. would miss my 100% regen so didnt lvl it yet )
i would say both are plenty hard to play, pure warrior without healing magic will never cut , on higher difficulty , but lvl healing magic isnt bad or hard, on adept you get insta cast spells, then you just make sure healing spells heals for more, and even restore stamina and you golden didnt need more than that
as warrior you will die a lot to casters, as mage you can avoid some of that by doging, not so much when you in mage face and he whacks you
at higher lvls 30+ even with master difficulty, while maxed out my bs, and with proper equip you end up 2 shotting most of stuff, hey i one shot plenty of stuff as a game now too
but ill agree on summons, so god damn worthless and useless
couple pages back we had that discussion about companions too op, and shit, my main point companions are never there when you need
exactly same is with summons, they either totally too weak on higher difficulty and get 2 shoted. or always get stuck and you cant spend 50% of your manna to re summon worthless pet in mid combat..
i enjoyed my warrior, enjoying my mage too, still ranger/assasin to go at some point

I played a mage on master, and I min/maxed it, like I always do in RPGs. I was level 24, destruction at 75, enchant at 70, I had vested in alteration a bit, and my lockpicking and speech went up - I'm very sorry for the lock-picking, since I pick expert locks with no invested perks with utter ease (this is just one shortcoming of many present in the RPG mechanics of Skyrim, which I find pretty bad). I have 480 and something magicka, and can shoot overcharged fireballs if I'm completely depleted of magicka every ~3 seconds. (magicka regen crafts with the 70 enchant perk + morokei + archmage's robes for the epic win).
I have 100 life, because I figured, if I play master, and will die from one hit even if I have 200 hp later on, I might as well just stay at 100, dodge instead, and max my magicka.
The game on master is a breeze. Enemies melt, I have so much gold, I don't even know what to do with it, and if it wasn't for exploration, I'd quit the game right now.
I generally find the RPG mechanics of Skyrim very weak, and flawed, where you have to do tricks like this to optimize your character: I never used restoration for healing, ever, because I didn't want to level from it, so I just used potions instead, and thus stayed stronger than the scaling enemies, because all my points went in to meaningful things like destruction and enchantment.
I just don't like Skyrim's mechanics, I think the level up by use approach is inherently inferior to level up by general XP. You can create way more unique characters, and have more control over your progress with a level-up system, than with a level by use system. Also, with this dumbed down mechanics, gameplay wise, there's no difference between the races (I mean 5 skill ranks, come on, that's completely irrelevant).
Anyway, I'll write my review about the game soon, but so far, this is not better than an 7.5 for me. If that. But 7.5 at me is good ... just not great (like DEHR! fuck ya!)
Contrary to earlier arguments () enchanting can be VERY overpowered in this game. It may look simplified, but don't mistake tidier with simpler.
What? Who said enchanting wasn't worth it? Before I built my char, I just made a few quick calculations, and it was instantly obvious, that it's very much worth it until 99, and at 100 it just becomes god. Also, always use enchanter's potion, before enchanting, after a while it's really worth it.
Also, enchanting is very worth it economically, if you have the black star, then it's just like an endless flow of huge amounts of money in your pocket. I wish I could buy me some cities!
My mage is level 43 right now. Playing on expert I've never had any problems. Sure, I die very fast when they hit me (but not always in 1-2 hits either) but they just don't. I did not min/max (though I am strongly specialized) and I had no need for any optimization tricks either. I mean, WTF for? I just play, do what I want and my skills get raised accordingly - a bit of common sense is enough to stay the biggest alpha dog around. The game is neither too hard nor exceedingly easy - which is just fine by me.

You can easily brake any Bethesda game by powergaming, In Morrowind you can basically complete all quests without leveling by just knowing right potion combinations. If you want to have fun in their game you need to roleplay. Forget about maxing your damage output and leveled enemies and just invest in what you think is right for your character.
Say I'm role-playing Orc Berserker. I know that enchanting and potions are very usefull, but screw it my Orc will not dabble in arcane arts, I won't even invest into crafting. I'll pick what I find and run around almost naked in light armour. Fuck, I won't even wear a helmet, no Orc looks good in one. I'll play it at default or even lower difficulty and only take quests fit for that role, and I bet I'll have more fun than beating game on highest difficulty and completing all quests in the game.

Orsimer are some of the best smiths in all of Tamriel, y u no follow lore!

Look at nexus for balance mods for destruction. Problem with destruction is that it doesnt scale very well. There are some band aid fixes until bet either patches it or releases mod tools.

Cool, I think that's what I meant in my original post. Some mobs seem to not react to my magic AT ALL. But with this free mana build, it should be a lot better....
Off to craft/enchant. Got a ton to do to get both to 100
So far, changed my race from Breton to High Elf for the racial ability. Redistributed my skills, all worked fine.
Yeah after getting the free destruction magic i kinda got bored with the magic, so i went and trained 1handed wapons from the companion guy. Now i run around in my dragon plate aromor casting unlimited destruction magic and Have 2 Deadric Swords that do like 140+80+80 damage each. Best of both worlds. Then i also have the steeds stone, so i can run around fast with my heavy armor. Once you get your crafting skills to a 100 game becomes too easy lol
