Extremely bright star shining North by Northwest on the eastern US Coast / Northern Hemisphere this time of year.. I assume it is Venus? That is usually a morning star though. I can never find the north star..but around this time of year..this star is like a damn flash light pointing west in the late evenings.

Surely you mean astronomy, not astrology... One is a science, the other is just bullshit.
Damnit i tried to find the right one.. I was trying to make sure i didn't type in the 'star sign" bullshit..but apparently i failed lol.
I guess it could be jupiter but we rarely get Jupiter this brightly and Venus usually is a bit more blue.. just wondering if i'm missing a main point on a constellation during this time of year. Don't really have a camera that could illustrate anything decently. If i'm right..it's a bit left of orions belt and the dippers.
If you got an android, use Google Sky Map. I love that application. You just point your phone to the skies and it tells you exactly which stars are there.
Get that app on your mobile, what's it called, skychart? My sister has it, it's uber cool You just point on the sky and it show you the constellations, planets, stars, even where the center of the Milky Way is ^^
EDIT: Damn you Israeli ninja!

thats true you know. newton didnt discover gravity. the apple told him about it, and then he killed it. the core was never found.

I'll get a smartphone when my company pays for one.. until then.. I'll stick with my burner for emergency / On call texts and my land line for phone calls

Yeah I Figured it was either one of those two. Venus here is generally a morning star at this time of year though... didn't think jupiter ever swung close enough to look this perty though. It's possible.
I used this. Just selected the east-coast, turned north-westwards and it was sitting right above the horizon. Although I just turned back the time and at the time of your post Jupiter should not have risen yet, so it might have been something else (nothing on there that would be that bright).
Yeah, it's gonna sound really bad, but it might have been a weather balloon.
Those things can also be really bright. I remember as a kid my family took a holiday on on of the Mediterranean islands and we saw one of them and it was like a really bright star. We knew it was a balloon since it was fairly close and we could make out the shape, but if it was farther away, we might have mistook it for a star.

Nah i've been star watching although not always knowing what things were ..so knew it wasn't a balloon as i have seen one once.this one has kept a solid tract with the constellations around it all night...
Fairly sure now (thanks to your link) that is Sirius due to the movement from West to South West and moving along with Orion which i can spot fairly easilly on such a clear night.
Jupiter would be well below the skyline by now and Venus is about to pop up.
Any time. Although the arrows on the time dial are confusing, since one would expect if I press up the numbers would go up, but it's the other way around.
Also, as I see it from here, Venus (and Mercury) will rise after the Sun (4 hours), so right now they can be observed at dusk. Saturn should be up on the east right now by the way.

Yeah I pushed the time back so i could see where the stars should be where i last looked.. Sirius was right there.
Venus should overtake in the next couple months and become our morning star..it may still be during daylight..but soon enough we will be able to see it rise over our mountain here late night.. really neat to watch a really bright colored star rise from a mountain...it's often mistaken for a UFO around here oddly enough lol
Yeah, I even heard that one time a cop was chasing after Venus, thinking it was a UFO, while the whole illusion of movement was merely due to the fact that he was driving on a road with lots of turns.

Haha that sounds about right.. While it is still on the horizon..it seems to be moving alot faster anyway...
It's probably one of the most beautiful stars i've ever seen... the first way i ever learn to tell direction depending season.. I can never seem to find the northern star on the East Coast USA..but I always i always know where Venus is now depending on what time of year it is.
It's strange because except a different color and a mild change in size..nothing really fucking different about it..but I love Venus
During the Spring here..as it is dropping down into the horizon (Evening star at that time) once it reaches a certain point it looks like it is plummeting and starts kind of moving it"real time' until it disappears.. have had more than one redneck neighbor come up asking me if I saw that mysterious object too.
