Nothing wrong with asking for donations. In fact I think they should have some little button that links to a donation page on all pages. Also show there how much is covered and how much more is needed.
Wikipedia however has chosen the last couple of years to include a big banner on all their pages during these donation events. This is what irritates me, I don't have to be confronted with the same message on all pages. Also the personal appeal thing irritates me.

I guess you didn't see the [x] in the corner of the banner that, once clicked, causes the banner to go away. On every page.

I understand the irritation, I really do, what I *don't* understand is the BS from 4chan and everywhere else who all expect everything to be free and woe betide anyone asking for donations.

This and only this <3 Despite people's constant bitching that "Wikipedia is fake and gay because it can be edited by anyone" - the site is a spectacular knowledge resource and information has cited sources or is specifically marked that the information isn't confirmed. It's helped me out plenty of times and I've lost countless hours reading on there =)
If the guy wants to beg for some money, since it's obvious he's not getting enough voluntary donations, then so be it. You don't HAVE to pay anything and you CAN close the banner.

How can people be irritated by this? The site has zero advertisement, millions of views every day, it has a shitload of free info, it's fast and good at what it does. I'd rather have this than a permanent ad banner.
