To many games in mind...
List is subject to change anytime...
Adventure: The curse of Monkey Island (Get the theme song it's my iPod's #1)
Strategy: Starcraft, Theme Hospital, Civ3
FPS: Half-Life, Duke Nukem, ... Soldiers of fortune
Action: Max Payne, Mafia, Gta, Contra
RPG: Fallout and all of Black Isles :RIP: And Morrowind
Sport: They all suck but... I like NHL and Fight Night
Racing: Project Gotham, NFSU2
Sry if i forgot a genre...
And of course there is a special mention for THE best game of all time to me: Super Mario world : Only because i still find it extremly amusing and challenging to play even after all these years.

Wow im SHOCKED! no one thinks operation flashpoint was "the best game ever"?
To this day, that game is the ONLY game that ever gave me goose bumps when I first played the demo..
It was revolutionary when it came out.

Squaresoft and LucasArts both have a great back catalogue of games - all the classic RPG's that Squaresoft released back in the day for the Snes in particular and LucasArts collection of games based on the Scumm engine plus the X Wing series. I've yet to see a new adventure game with the quality of humour, characters and story writing that full throttle, sam and max, maniac mansion and the monkey island series had - they were just classic titles.
I wouldnt even know where to begin today you'd have to break it down into best rpg, best sports game, best fps, best adventure etc and even within those genres there are further sub genres to consider. Older retro stuff like pacman, tetris, bomberman, skool daze/back to school has to be in there somewhere as well.
Baldurs Gate 1-2 plus addons
Metal Gear Solid series
Rainbow Six series
Command and Conquer series
Grand Theft Auto series
all the above rate pretty highly on mylist of newer titles, Splinter Cell:CT is very impressive as a new game not sure it would go onto any classic list and by the end of the year when the sequel comes out it will probably look as obsolete as pandora tomorrow does now.
Blade Runner was a nice adventure game too, loved the multiple endings and just how generally how well they managed to capture the feeling of the film in-game.

The most fun I have ever had and the best game in my opinion was Op Flashpoint. Brilliant scope, amazing gameworld and an almost GTA style of gameplay. awesome!

I forgot perfect dark on n64, the splitscreen multiplayer is yet to be beaten. No other game on any platform beats PD in multiplayer |
i preferred goldeneye on temple PD was great for co-op though
one RPG i think is extremely underrated is earthbound was so good back in the day LBA2 was so fun ive still got my copy somewhere.

Yeah I preferred Goldeneye for multiplayer as well, for all of it's extensive options and features there's just no beating the original in my opinion. I can still play it to this day and get 'in the zone' so to speak. It's a true classic.

Same experience here, I bought a whole new setup to run that game at a moderate level - it cost me an arm and a leg and I never regret it since that game was truly immersive and had me lost in action for many, many hours.
Whether I would say it's the best game or not I don't know, in fact, I wouldn't say any game is the best - they are all different and they all succeed on so many levels that it's just not fair to compare.
Some real classics been mentioned here though that has brough about a bit of nostalgia.
