Why don't we wait until it's out? Smile

It seems to me it's a run-of-the-mill MMO covered in singleplayer trappings. So, either you enjoy the storybased quests or you don't.

The traditional MMO player most likely won't find much of interest in it, but I suspect the KotOR fan might enjoy it for the story - as will others who appreciate a reasonably polished experience that can be shared with friends when you want to.

With all the resources poured into it, it's bound to offer something of value to most people.

I just get the feeling people seem to want it to be a twitch fighting game with lightsabers... which obviously won't work very well as an MMO...

I am curious as to the endgame content though...

It's almost certainly not twitchy in any way. But then again, neither was KotOR. As long as they've managed to make combat interesting and reasonably engaging - I'll be happy with it. I don't think twitch combat is possible in an MMO without sacrificing too many other vital things.

WoW was the perfect mixture of twitch and massively multiplayer to me in terms of the combat. Anything else, and you'd have to reduce the amount of players in the same area and the amount of stuff they could do.

The endgame content? Yeah, I expect it to be like most other MMOs. Raids and a few PvP zones. Nothing too special. I think the game is largely focused around the story and the replayability due to multiple starting planets.

Ok, I can't figure out the sudden hate towards the game...

People saying it's a grind/quest bore, where you kill x of these, get x item take it back to y, etc etc. Yet surely the original KOTOR were pretty much the same thing? Combat is pretty much the same idea (auto attack, special skills etc), and questing is the same idea (run around, kill lots, find items, take back to quest giver, etc)

And those two games are hailed as SW RPG legends.

Sooo... someone explain what is so bad about SWTOR?

Theres a few snags with your post, first, the KotOR games were single player games, which you didnt need to pay monthly for... they had a clear story with a start, middle and end.

Second, combat in this game is nothing even remotely like KotOR, its not even like WoW as it doesnt have an auto-attack.

Mainly, people were expecting this to be a scifi epic mmorpg, and all they got for their trouble was WoW 2.0 with an on-rails space mini game added on. Thats my biggest complaint. Smile

You have several western mmo´s with twitch combat, Dungeons and Dragons Online and Darkfall to name just 2. Eastern ones you have a numch of them.

So no, its not impossible, just not what people are used to.

I still have some problems with this combat thing?

KOTOR - Auto-attack, choose special attacks/force powers/heal during combat.
SWTOR - No auto attack(?), choose special attacks/force powers/healing items.

Ok, you can't directly control your companion, but that's the only obvious difference I see...

I agree about the space thing tho... Neutral

I didn't say it was impossible. I said it would mean sacrificing vital things.

DDO is 100% instance-based and you can't have a lot of people in the same one fighting. Darkfall is a small-time MMO from an indie developer that looks and plays like shit. Well, that's what I think about it, anyway.

That's not to say that Darkfall doesn't have some good points, but overall it's just not worth playing to me. If you find the combat of Darkfall appealing - then let's just say we differ in our tastes. Twitch-based? Ok, I guess - but executed in an abysmal way with the most stilted and awkward animations I can imagine.

Even as a tab-target combat system, the one in SWtoR is bound to decimate Darkfall in a million ways before breakfast. Anything said to the contrary is denial.

I like how in most SciFi RPGs technological advancement is a foreign concept and most of the time a hundred year old lost weapon is the deciding factor in a war.

Finally, got an e-mail to beta test this over the weekend. Not sure how much I'll try it out considering I'll be playing Skyrim but all it will take is 30 min or less for me to decide if this game is worth playing at all. Combat smoothness / animations make or break these games for me; after all, that's what you spend most of your time doing (other than afking in cities).

I never understood how TOR is set thousands of years before the star wars trilogy and yet the technology seemed exactly the same.

Just my luck. Got selected to participate on the beta, but the site is down for maintenance Sad

I wouldn't normally mind, but this is surely a huge download and will take time, so this is a shitty inconvenience.

seems odd. pfft

Previous testers have been re-invited, so they will already have access to the beta forums most likely, and thus the client.
