So downloaded 9GB+ file from d2d. Tried to install it via winrar and certain pak-files had CRC-errors. So downloaded file again, 2nd file same story different pak-files though.

Support of d2d says not to use winrar or the windows unzipper but to use 7zip instead. Okay unzipped both files again with 7zip. Both produce CRC-errors but different than winrar gave, although some pak files were the same. Then I did a couple of extract test with both files more and 7zip is not consistent in the errors. Some pak-files keep producing CRC-errors but some not. This is the stuff that I don't like. Sad

Bad HHD or bad mem (or both Crying or Very sad)? Mem here is clocked 933 Mhz (dual channel), timings 9-10-9-27 on Sandy Bridge system with P67 Southbridge. Any suggestions for memtest?

If you don't have recovery record for the file you can forget about it.

And it's not your disk, it's the file you've downloaded Wink

All files stored in a zip get their CRC stored in the zip as well. While unzipping the unzip program calculates the checksum and compares it to the stored value. Problem here is the CRC errors aren't consistent. Though this still doesn't exclude download errors, it does point towards some other kind of failure I am afraid.

Edit: same file another unzip run:

It's getting worse now, I am beginning to suspect the HDD. Neutral

Had this problem with NFS:Carbon when I downloaded it way back when. Turns out one my RAM sticks was buggered. Not sure if that's a common problem, but I'd certainly do a memtest on your RAM before assuming your HDD is dying.

@wizardD.: Nah, my story started with using winrar.

@Pixieking: I went out to buy me some new recordable media. Ran memtest-86 v4.0a and the results were quite gruesome.
260k-2048M seems to work fine, above it a shitload of errors, complete ranges do not work.
Tried at different speeds of the DDR3: 1866 -> 1600 -> 1333
Doesn't seem to matter, errors everywhere. Swapped module 0,1 for 2,3 and it also didn't show any difference, so I guess my mainboard (most likely memory controller) got borged.
Not a big problem since I already had a replacement just didn't feel like swapping it. Will have to swap shitty Asus P8P67-M for ASRock P67 Extreme4 now.

Question though, is using DDR3 modules running at 1866 too much for this chipset (the modules themselves can go up to 2000)? Do I need to cool a certain chip?

Did you remove module 2,3 while leaving 0,1 in? And if you still have errors, replace 0,1 and 2,3, ie. run just two sticks at a time.

I removed 0,1 and placed 2,3 back as 0,1 and same results. I guess I can do many more tests but MB seems borged.

If it was a bad download, why would the exact same file (without redownloading it) give him different crc-errors?

Maybe a freeware tool like SIW can point out the problem with your hardware (if it's ie. gives error messages). Good luck finding the cause.

Latest update, swapped mainboard but same shit with mem tests. Then started swapping the modules again and 1 of the 4 was just borged. So gotta RMA that one. Meanwhile I am happy I finally got the shitty old mainboard out. New one gives much better OC options.

Edit: New mobo rocks.

That's with HT and 8 tasks heavier than Prime95. I guess I need water cooling now.
