I hate Gearbox but I do give them credit for how they treat their fans. This was pretty cool

Cynical side of me says they're one of the developers who use a publisher who rips of fans with regional pricing, so they trreat their fans like shit and this is just a marketting stunt exploiting the death of a fan for the purposes of PR.

But they really should've put him in there without making a media fuzz about it. That would be truly great. As it stands you can easily claim they're doing it to get some good free publicity. I'm not saying they are but you could easily do just that. Personally I like Valve. They make good products. Well sort of if you don't count Duke Nukem Forever.

Confused

Valve and Duke Nukem Forever? What? Very Happy
Gearbox's first stuff may have been Opposing Force and Blue Shift, but they never were a part of Valve Razz

Laughing Sorry, I'm a terrible person.

Besides, it's nothing more than a marketing stunt, it's the same thing as when a guy wanted to propose to a girl and asked Gearbox to record a Claptrap video with the proposal.

So?

In neither case it is Gearbox who get the video / audio clips out there, they don't advertise with "LOL LOOK AT US BEING AWESOME". They know whoever made the request will probably get stuff out there, but they don't make a fuss about it themselves.

So yeah, they're getting free publicity but they're not the ones driving that. Even if they had quietly put him in as an NPC, it would still become a major item because the guy who requested it would post it everywhere just like he has now.

What else would you guys have them do? Just deny the request, saying "no sorry, we don't want to seem like free publicity whoring cunts"? The cynicism on here sometimes, fuck me

Meh.

Nice of them I guess, but zero effect on my expectations for the PC por-er, "version" of BL2.

Gearbox's first stuff may have been Opposing Force and Blue Shift, but they never were a part of Valve Razz

They started with developing expansions to Valve Software's Half-Life. Porting Half-Life to console platforms (each with new game content) followed, building the company's experience in console game-making, in addition to enhancing and building upon the successful Counter-Strike branch of the Half-Life franchise. Prior to Half-Life 2, they had developed or helped develop every Half-Life expansion game or port, including Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, Half-Life for the Sony PlayStation 2 (including Half-Life Decay), and Half-Life for the Sega Dreamcast (including Half-Life Blue Shift). Branching out to other publishers, they pursued additional port work, each game being released with additional content, but this time from console to PC. -wikipedia

They sure have close ties though.

July 2002 precisely according to Pitchford Razz

http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/379/379597p1.html

Quote:
Gearbox Software suspended development of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero in July of 2002. Counter-Strike: Condition Zero introduces single player gaming to the world's #1 online action game. Valve Software has overseen development since July. Gearbox is aware of and endorses Ritual Entertainment's involvement.

Also a couple of years ago he was talking shit about how Valve and Steam exploit indie developers

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/randy_pitchford_talks_borderlands_piracy_and_why_he_doesn%E2%80%99t_trust_valve?page=0%2C0

Quote:
I’ll tell you what. Steam helps. As a guy in this industry though, I don’t trust Valve. (...) It’s actually really, really dangerous for the rest of the industry to allow Valve to win. (...) Steam helps us as customers, but it’s also a money grab, and Valve is exploiting a lot of people in a way that’s not totally fair. Valve is taking a larger share than it should for the service its providing. It’s exploiting a lot of small guys. For us big guys, we’re going to sell the units and it will be fine.

Which was completely debunked by several indies.

Since then his studio put Steam Achievements and Steam Cloud support into Borderlands (which initially lacked any SteamWorks features), proceeded to release DNF exclusively on Steam, and finally just a couple of months ago put a tracking feature exclusively to the Steam version of Borderlands that gathers stats (that presumably will help them with Borderlands 2) Laughing I think the $$$ he earned from Borderlands on Steam made him change his mind Laughing
