MOO2 is very good game but I hate planet micro managing. Image this you have 100 planets and now you need to build new farm on 75 planets… a lot of clicking, and new factory building few turns later…

No one is saying MoO2 can't be improved.

MoO3 had the right ideas, but fucked up on execution in the worst way imaginable.

But a modern MoO2 with similar features and some up-to-date interface/streamlining features = heaven.

I'm sick of these half-assed 4X space games that can't get the basics right.

MoO2 is still the king.

I'm really curious what you find in MOO2 that is so much better, apart from it being associated with pleasant memories of your younger years. (aka nostalgia)

What do you think the emphasis of MOO and MOO2 was? Because I'm fairly sure it was research and expansion and ship building and ship battles and .. oh wait, we are just reciting the 4Xes.

What were they?
Explore - check.
Expand - hmm.. check.
Exploit - check.
Exterminate - Check - with a capital C.

Yes, MOO2 had a few things that were missing from SOTS..
- espionage and covert actions - interesting, but marginal facet of the overall game,
- more complex diplomacy - although on the complexity scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is sots, MOO2 would only get a measy 3 or 4 if you are really generous.
- planetary development - oh yea.. copied the good old civ interface, like amost everything of that time. food, production, research.. No offense, but if you look past the micromanagement, whatever you do on that planet details screen could pretty much be described in 2-3 sliders and oh wait.. aint that exactly what MOO 1 or SOTS for that matter did?
- GNN and random events? We pretty much got those in SOTS.. hell, the sots random events are one of the most appreciated aspects of the game and subject to worship by mecronites.
- Galactic senate and diplomatic victory.. well, since SOTS had no diplomacy to begin with apart from the two simple options of 'I kill you now' and 'I kill you later', diplomatic victory was a little pointless. However diplomacy is one of the new facets of the game that was improved upon in SOTS 2 as far as i know, so you might wanna look into that before you make your decision.

So again, what exactly is it that makes MOO2 better than SOTS in your eyes?

You're downplaying the planetary development aspect as if it was nothing. It was a huge part of the game to me, and a big reason for my fondness of it. You can boil everything down to simple concepts if you want to. If you think adjusting a slider is the same as manually designing planet build orders according to your research strategy and getting the tactile feedback of placing stuff Civ-style - then obviously it doesn't matter to you. I tend to HATE streamlining of such features - because I love to get my hands on stuff. Ideally, it should be POSSIBLE to streamline - for the late-game.

Then we had the hero characters which added some nice RPG features, and I really enjoyed finding them and following their development as they leveled up. It gave a personal touch that does make a difference.

The espionage and covert actions were not particularly great, but they were there - and yes, they made a big difference to me.

I also really liked that I could win the game by invading the Antaran dimension and overtake their homeworld. Also, being voted to victory by others was a great win condition Smile

About Diplomacy, I don't know SotS2 well enough - but it was a big part of MoO2 - especially in terms of the treaties and tech trading. It was great fun trying to instigate war through the diplomacy interface.

But, like all SimTex games - it's the combination of all the little things. They were always great with details. I love that I could board ships and take them over, and I loved the way Telepaths could manipulate population. The race customization was very well done and had very interesting choices, rather than just "+10% pop" etc. They understood strategic appeal better than any developer out there, to my mind.

You have to appreciate that the features you apparently don't think are so important, CAN be very important to someone else.

Got the keys via Gamersgate but it seems they might wait for Steam or some other release check before they allow downloading, still not much I can do for now but it'll be interesting to play the sequel. Smile
(Was quite some time ago I played the previous game - missed most expansions - so it's probably going to be pretty new to me.)

Christ what a fucking shit release this has been, the so called correct version or patched version still is beta, but what is worse the game design is worse than the original sots.
Think moo3.
Avoid at all costs, waste of bandwidth.

It doesn't really fix anything.

Seems their whole "We accidentally uploaded a beta to Steam" was just damage control.

Game is unfinished.

Give it a few more weeks then try it out. Right now it's a beta, very much so.
It will crash at odd times and theres bugs in there that prevents the game from completing, ie game breakers.
So just stay clear for now.
I'm buying 4x games religiously though and I'm somewhat happy to have supported the developer because I know from experience that they will fix the issues, it's however not a good way to do business.

What the heck is going on with PC game industry?

Battlefield3- looping sound, graphical artifacts, crash - waiting for driver and patch
Rage- texturepopping, bad texture, flashing Npc-s, crash at loading screen -waiting for driver and patch
Stronghold 3- seriously? not enough space for the errors
Heroes VI- Still gamebreaking bugs, flashing cursor, CTD-s, performance for me is shit.
Dead Island - wrong version published
Sword of the stars 2- wrong version published

This is the new anti piracy DRM or what?

3GB+ being the DLC (those pre-order immersion packs, when extracted.) as the release notes show.
http://store.steampowered.com/news/6650/

Also I didn't follow the game much at all but apparently it was somewhat known the release would be messy and buggy and Kerberos are doing what they can now, ran out of time and had to release or some such.

It's because developers don't give a rotten rat's ass about the PC platform. They'll shovel any old shit down our throats and they know there's nothing anyone can do about it.
