guys the game sucks anyway so no need to sweat your ass of trying to get it running. I guess all the console kiddies will fall for the gfx and miss the empty shell of what could be a really cool game.

So how do I change the FOV on the skidrow release? +cvaradd g_fov 10 doesn't do anything.

@ Mchart/consolitis: be quiet if you don't know what you're talking about. The OpenGL spec has tons of things in it that don't make sense and neither AMD nor NVIDIA have ever been fully compliant with any version. And no, it's not a bug in AMD's drivers, because I don't have any issues anymore after updating the OpenGL DLL. I can just point at NVIDIA + FBO or ATI + glGenerateMipmap for two *very* long standing "bugs". NVIDIA has also had its fair share of problems; ambient lights in D3 were good fun, where owners of a 6-series card (like me) had to roll back a few driver revisions. FX-vacuum cards on the same drivers didn't have the same problem though. The common factor there was NV40+ and ForceWare 61.xx+ (sorry, I don't remember the actual version anymore, working one was an outdated one at least). IIRC, the problem was NVIDIA fucking with id's ambient map, effectively removing the effect of ambient light.
And again, I'm not experiencing graphical glitches - none that aren't related to the engine itself. Cat 11.10 preview 1 w/ Rage OGL DLL. Have not turned AI off or done anything in my control panel (other than my tessellation setting). The same driver as everyone who IS having graphical glitches on a card that DOES have the issues for a lot of people. The only things I had to do was fix the game's streaming settings just like everyone else and turn off Radeon Pro. And even if it was a bug in the driver, how do you explain the NVIDIA owners who experience the exact same issues? There's some other common factor between these people, just noone has found it yet. Would be impressive if the common factor was the driver.
Fuck, now I actually hope that launching BF3 before launching RAGE is the fix, because that would be one of the most awesome fixes ever and a perfect example of just how shoddy the T5 implementation is.
Edit: oh and if Carmack really wants to get rid of drivers on the PC, then the first thing he should've done was implement a proper routine to detect any random videocard's capabilities and adjust settings for that. Which they don't. That would've proven that it's doable without drivers and still coping with the dozens of cards used at any given time. |
Yet none of this changes the fact that only ATI is the one that has serious issues with OpenGL games at release, and it's been this way as long as they've been making cards. I don't need to know the technicalities of this shit to just look at ATI's history.

Game runs great here on my old rig. Just to verify this for people with rig similar to mine.
Oh, and btw, this tip worked:
Quote: | 1. The graphics constantly reloading/re-rendering.
A combination of the improper installation and Windows security causes the game to not actually create the folder needed to cache the graphics. To correct this (Vista/7) locate:
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local and create a folder named "id software" and inside that a folder named "rage" as well. (So far it seems it's not case sensitive.)
You'll notice the very first time you start the game it'll fill with cache(in .bin) files. |
I had to manually create it (yeah id, because Windows XP has TREMENDOUS security and wouldn't allow you to create a folder in the user's local appdata folder, -sigh-) but once I did, straight away 1GB worth of cache files appeared.
In Windows XP, the folder structure you need to create is:
D:\Documents And Settings\*Username*\Local Settings\Application Data\id software\rage
[ i5 2500K (@4.2GHz) / GIGABYTE Z77MX-D3H / 8GB Corsair XMS / GIGABYTE GTX460 1GB OC / 640+750 GB WD Caviar Black ]

didn't work for me. yep, the game DID create cache, but this didn't fix the late texture load when i turn around. or maybe i misunderstood what this fix was for...

155 pages too many to flip through them all but i know that ATI cards are getting bumfucked but still im going to post my issue. When i launch the game i only hear sound and see a tiny green box flickering in the bottom left corner. When by sound i hear that i should see the menu screen the box remains in the corner and all i see is black screen. I have ATI Radeon 5700HD card. At first when i launched it then it didnt launch at all but i threw the atioglxx.dll in RAGE folder then it is doing the green box thing. What might be the case?
Also on a little sidenote. My display drivers seem to be failing to install all the time lately. I download the pack which contains everything from AMD own homepage but every time it fails to install my display drivers. It install the install manager and control center but no drivers...

Probably the same as Crytek did with the DX11 patch.

Mkay i actually got it running now but man it has taken me about 5 minutes to exit my pod into the very first room. The lagging/ stuttering and freezing is Unbeliavable! Any files somewhere where i can change some settings that might remove the massive lag?

There are no settings to adjust as such, what sort of hardware do you have?
(And you do need the latest drivers for your GPU also.)

I installed the mew AMD catalyst drivers but I still get missing textures in-game. It runs pretty smooth with the Catalyst AI disabled.
Stinky244: If you have a Radeon try disabling Catalyst AI.

Did you put atioglxx.dll in your Rage folder?

After playing for three hours, I do not understand what is so good about this game. It's fun, but that's it. I can't name a single thing this game does better than any other game. This also must be one of the easiest shooters I have ever played. I don't mind kicking ass, but it gets boring when you can do it with one hand tied to your back.
Only thing that really shines is the fun shooting mechanic, it works. It's a shame though we no longer live in the nineties when a shooter only had to have fun shooting.
After three hours, 6.5/10. Not worth all the hoops and trouble I had to go through to make it run reasonably well.
Oh as for graphics, as I said earlier it's a mix of highres textures and very low res textures. I'm a sucker for details, so I can't seem to look past those shitty textures. There are a lot of games which run much better with much better graphics. It looks fabulous for an Xbox game ON THE Xbox, I'll say that again, but for PC it isn't enough. This is a very clear case of a craptastic port (fast, no proper QA, zero options etc).

I dont know but for me this game is way too short. About 8hrs of playing on second difficulty level and without sidequests. Only main story.

I'd have to agree about the game being average, but contrary to most, it's the combat that i find unappealing.
It's broken. It feels like i'm shooting carton props and not something that is alive. It's really hard to explain but my shooting doesn't really connect with they're reactions to it. It feels like cod, and i hate cod shooting. They use fake animations, there's no real time ragdoll going on, just animation number 1 or animation number 2. It's fake (Probably 'cause i've been playing RDR again recently).
The Npc's are really great, with a lot of character (too bad they just only serve for fetching quests), but the textures and polygons up close of the environments are terrible.
Ii'm trying desperately (for lack of better things to do) to like this game, but the combat doesn't click with me and i get terribly bored after 15mins.
