Using that high end config I get stuttering. Using "seta mem_phymemblocksizem 512" eliminated the stutters for me (1GB VRAM).

The constant freezing problem drives me mad, google and found the fix, disable AI, but the drawback is the textures will screw up. Piss off and stop playing now.

Quote: | How GPU Transcoding Works
CUDA is NVIDIA's parallel computing architecture. It enables dramatic increases in computing performance by harnessing the power of the graphics card to perform tasks that would take significantly longer on a CPU. In Rage, id Software uses a compressed texture format to hold tens of gigabytes of assets in 12GB of files in the game’s virtualtextures directory. Each time a texture is required in-game it is uncompressed via DXT, a texture compression algorithm originally developed by S3 Graphics, a company known for its Savage GPUs in the late 90s.
As this process requires a significant amount of computational power, and is used every second as the player moves around the world, the CUDA GPU Transcoding feature offloads much of the work from the CPU to ensure that is completed as quickly as possible in an attempt to prevent texture streaming and pop-in issues. As the GPU has to also render the in-game graphics, the CPU is left with 25-40% of the calculations, which as you’ll see later can be tweaked to further improve streaming performance. |

Beat it, 17 hours or so on Hard (albeit looking through every nook for those playing cards). Hard was actually laughably easy, the AI isn't aggressive enough to pose any real challenge.
Did anyone else get a Firefly vibe from this game? I did, especially from the towns and music.
Regarding the end...
Spoiler: |
Holy shit, that was the worst/most anti-climactic ending I've seen in a LONG time. The last mission was a joke and totally forgettable, and the ending cinematic was just generic as all fuck. Definite fail.
|
I give it a 7/10. It really doesn't deserve more. It was a tech demo that tried to make itself seem deeper than it was through the inventory system/side missions. Had fun, but uninstalled and most likely never to be reinstalled again
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

From GAF:
Quote: | Alright I found the cause of the constant 4-5 second freezes, it wasn't graphics related it was my piece of shit Logitech G35. Now normally when running one of the (many, many, MANY) games that don't work properly with that dogshit headset you can switch the driver to a default USB driver and get it working at the cost of losing surround sound. Well Rage was freezing up even on the regular USB driver, I disabled the thing entirely and no more random freezes. |
Quote: | My friend had a similar issue when his headset was hooked up. Why a USB headset would have any impact on Rage framerates is a question best left up to the PC gaming gods. |

Anyway, it's a shame so many people are having issues with RAGE, as I've been having a blast with it. First time in god knows how many years where I can play a game with zero issues. I'm a good 8-9hrs deep into it now and still loving every step. It could have been more, it could have been prettier, it could have and should have.... but I don't really care. I'm enjoying it immensely and, IMO, if you have a decent (nVidia-based) system to bruteforce past the bullshit coding; well worth the money.

Sometimes when I load i get 1-2 fps and it looks like its building the world because all the textures are really blurry but then it either goes to 60 and goes to normal looking or crashes? With Nvidia.

I think developers were too lazy to test their game on PC before lauching it, otherwise how could they stay silent in front of their dirty poping textures ?

All their trailers have zero pop in, so they used the PC version for them with a setting of something like 16k^2 textures.
And the game was playable on PC at Quakecon 2011 and it run fine (with the minor pop in the final version has as well but with the promise it will be tweaked before and post-launch).

After sausje's help (basically installing the newest driver and putting one dll file in the game folder, plus activating v-sync to make it prettier), it runs on my ATI with 60FPS @1920x1080 with 4xAA too And it feels fluid! To enhance the I even changed my TV from PC to Console mode and activated tru-motion. Hehe, feels as if I have 100fps
Next I should try that gamepad combo too
