Im actually enjoying it, I used the fixes and cfg and forced vsync. It doesn't look that bad. Have some silly crashes tho during loading screens with skidrow.

Anyone fancy giving me a hand?
Got the game and I done the so called workaround within that YouTube video.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Rage\Rage.exe" +cvaradd g_fov 12 +com_allowconsole 1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +image_anisotropy 16 +image_usecompression 0 +g_showplayershadow 1 +m_smooth 0
That's what my launch parameter is.
I'm still getting screen tearing, and the performance is so shit. I'm only getting 20-25FPS.
Where the hell do you change the graphic options!

If I recall correctly you have HD6870 as well, correct? I have that one too, but I haven't encountered any issues beside that strange NPC animation flickering bug. |
The texture streaming error pure happens when frapsing, you try recording and see if your fps drops to 15 aswell with slowdowns..
At full res ofc, not half res.

Well, the FPS is good, but how do I fix the texture issue? It's not as bad as on ATI but it's still annoying.

That driver is already out lolozaur, it's many pages back now along with other info like only using the specific OpenGL driver while keeping the latest (10.10 BF3 preview.) Catalyst drivers.
I've been busy so haven't done much at all, did finally find a comparison between 8192 and 4096 however 8192 can cause stuttering which I'm trying to offset, currently can't get half resolution working either such as 6144 but we'll see where that leads.
Current settings work fairly well (No stuttering now and only minor glitches*.) albeit not all of them actually change properly due to so many commands being restricted/locked but that's down to only two commands now.
(Mouse smoothing and cache in MB, I really need to see how to get the second one to work properly.)
http://ded.zenblue.net/RAGE_PC/Rage_Test.gif
(Not mine.)
(*Possibly related to AF, apparently 4x is fine with higher causing possible texture seams and minor glitches, that thing about models bugging is also down to the GPU struggling, simply too much data for it to handle, lowering those 8192 values to 4096 again - which is the default - fixes nearly all of it, no crashes so far either and full 60 FPS.)

I noticed no texture issues when I had it running briefly (will play after work tonight); only installed the correct OGL DLLs and the YT fix.
I did notice however that all voice acting was fucked. All the sounds are fine, except for voices, that's just massive static

Might be related to the sound card but that's only a guess, there's a large amount of possibilities and I'm not sure what the game uses for it's sounds (XAct2 maybe but could be something of their own kinda like with Crysis though Crysis also uses third party solutions.)
Also it still reads OpenGL 3.2 on the new GPU but with the tessellation extension active, whatever it does.
(I've seen nothing hinting at this feature being used.)
EDIT: I use a Xonar D2X myself, need to keep GX mode disabled most often but other than that and the lack of proper drivers initially things have been fine.

Doubt it's a driver issue, as not a single game has ever had any trouble - and it's only a very specific subset of the sound. More likely that my installation is bad
Perhaps I need to use the SR launcher at least once or something?

Ah of course it might be the release, Skidrow did make a language pack available though I've not checked into it much.
I am uncertain how the game detects localization when it's running on a cracked setup, Windows locale seems likely unless it can be set in the ini file or similar along with AppID.
(It uses Steam's settings by default.)
That might be the problem then if it's trying to use a language you don't have installed for the game, unsure how to adjust this though but it can probably be fixed without too much trouble, think there was some posts earlier in this thread on something similar now that I think about it a bit.
(Thus just noise/static albeit with proper subtitles.)
EDIT: There it is. (Not my post, the one above.)

Piece of shit game. I´ve tried a shitload of fixes and poking around in the graphic card options and im still getting freezes that lasts about 5 seconds.
Might do something stupid.

Well the latest now is this but I need to take time and check things more thoroughly, is there a valid reason to use uncompressed or doesn't it matter, is AF useful or does it cause display artifacts and of course getting those locked down values to actually be changeable.

I've also noticed maxppf and lockedpages can be erratic but it works here though it can be unstable, easily noticed if the game starts to excessively stutter just after loading the game up.
Game now uses 1.3 GB of RAM (Unknown VRAM usage.) instead of ~650 - 700 MB but it's running without any hitches or framerate drops.
(8192 would be very useful to keep though but it seems to much for the game, or maybe hardware related.)
I've barely checked but a handful of commands other than these (Not that many could actually be changed.) and I still don't quite know what I'm doing (Which is nothing new.) so this is best seen as a drastic brute-force attempt than a balanced and optimized configuration which is getting quite clear by the number of issues mentioned when using the entire settings file, unfortunate.
(It does work however but it could be done so much better in the game code I'd imagine, hope it's patched up nicely.)
Once the game archives can be unpacked (If they can even be accessed in a user friendly manner, not the texture files I mean but those other data archives.) it might be interesting to open up video.cfg which is referenced when using the exec command and of course take a deeper look at the preset settings and what the game actually does.
Anyway I finished up the initial part to Wellsprings and the game is opening up a bit more, nice selection of gear available now and so far it's quite fun just to explore though there's a lot more to do, haven't checked either of the two sewer access points I've found so far for example (What exactly is their function and why are they DLC - it's handled by a single txt file actually - wonder what's down there.) and of course more interesting enemies like actual mutants will probably appear more frequently now.
Some five or so easter-eggs noticed thus far but most have been very easy to spot minus the Wolfenstein hall / dungeon.
(Wonder what else there is.)

So, is there a way at all, to fix the texture steaming issue?

Anyone using the Skidrow release? Game doesn't even start, just says RAGE has stopped working. Didn't install DirectX or the C++ at the end but surely that can't be the issue.

No the texture problem can't be fully fixed as such without killing the entire streaming part thus getting a single blue colored environment, it's a game engine limitation, it streams the entire texture data so it will load and unload frequently but it can be improved somewhat though at a performance and memory hit.
Atleast it's better than the mess you see by default but I hope it's patched properly.

Mister_s wrote: | What was the reasoning behind not letting users config the quality etc by themselves ingame? |
Because as I've written a few times already there's nothing substantial to config other than how much of the megatextures are loaded into memory. Look at the settings JB found, the only one that makes a noticeable difference is using 8k^2 loaded textures.
But people with not enough memory setting it to 8192 or higher they get extreme stuttering and textures that appear blue (there is no memory to load them). So it's best tweaked by the engine itself, unless you absolutely do know you have the required amount of memory (like I do).
I've written before how the only settings that would be missing from the game would be things like motion blur and bloom, but the game has neither (at least not in my experience).
The engine itself isn't designed to allow changes to model quality (or the megatextures would not wrap properly around the geometry so the models have to be of static quality), view distance (which is very high for a console game already as the megatextures themselves have been compressed with static view distance values to have the best possible appearance), AF (it's largerly incompatible with how megatextures work, especially in higher quality settings like 16x), lighting (baked), shadows (baked)..
There really aren't *any* options missing, other than vsync (which Carmack has turned it into the console soft-vsync setting to maintain 60 fps no matter what but I've found it doesn't work always properly..)

Already been posted. Congrats.
Is there anything ATI users need to do to get the game to even launch?
