Wow, Ben Kuchera (from the Ars Technica review) really killed it. Problem is, all his points seem quite valid. Don't read the quoted bullet points from consolitis, read the full review for yourselves.

Watching the near-perfect reviews of Rage is driving me up a wall. I feel like we need balance, and we're not getting it.

I can't help but think a lot of outlets aren't reviewing Rage, they're reviewing whether or not they'd like to get Skyrim early.

When reviews don't mention a single negative thing about games with major, obvious flaws... it's not right.

So could be something as simple as GPU transcoding is forced on, but it's done on the CPU with AMD users? (wasn't it CUDA, or OpenCL support too)

Patches at least should be small, I take it the problems just come on how the data is pulled from the megatextures and those won't need to be altered ever.

That's the funny thing, some nvidia users report the game runs fine once you DISABLE GPU transcoding. So it can't be it as it's disabled on AMD by default Razz

So far 0 positive responses from AMD users.
A few from nvidia users, and a couple negative ones.

This as far as performance is concerned.

Some AMD users additionaly report crashes, and rendering issues.
Both AMD and nvidia users report pretty bad texture popin the whole time (which is how the engine works, but Carmack said until release they would minimize this on the PC.. but it looks like they didn't?).

That video is fucked up, i think using mouse makes it even worse because you move your view around even faster. Console players maybe dont notice it so much cause of slower movement.

No, nvidia and console players have annoying pop in, but no that bad...

edit:

I must be the only one not having any issues, I dont notice any texture loading, image tearing and getting a solid 60fps.

2500k but everything else the same. 8x AA and gpu whatever enabled runs like a dream. Game looks insane! Running the latest released drivers, no beta.

Specs of a guy from steam who is having same problems:

Intel Core i7 975 Extreme
x2 GeForce 580 (SLI)
12 GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia driver 275.33

If this system is fucking up, what hope do us simple mortals have.

Ah, then something else funky going on. Thought people were exaggerating the texture pop--ups reading the impressions, but that video

i'm running it perfectly fine in 1920x1200 on a quadro fx 5800. there are popups and they are somewhat distracting, but for the most part they are like some minor movement/change in peripheral vision.

Another good impression from an nvidia player:

Quote:
Aside from some texture pop-in when turning around, I'm getting a great framerate and everything looks real good. Granted I just started the first quest, but I just want to bring some comfort to people having issues. If you can stand the pop-in, this game looks amazing.

Specs:

i-2500k
260 gtx
8 gig ram

I'm running 2500k with a 570 using the latest nvidia beta drivers and I'm getting pretty much locked 60 fps at 1080p with gpu transcoding on and AA set at 4X.

And I lol'd at the save system gripes. Oh no - you have to actually go in and manually save your game. What asshole is letting the system control their saves anyway. Here I was expecting there to be NO manual save, and the save system completely broken. No its just the system that no one in 2011 should be relying on that is broken.

i5 760 @ 3.8ghz
8gig ram
2 gtx460 1gig in sli

1080p, 4xaa, vsync enabled via nvidia control panel, triple buffering enabled via nvidia control panel.

no screen tearing and getting a constant 60fps. no stuttering ...butter smooth frames.

using latest nvidia beta drivers.

also using the xbox360 pad to play at the moment.

very nice graphics.

Runs fine here.

4gigs of ram

About 40 - 50 FPS here so far, texture streaming is overly aggressive even with just small mouse turns (Not to mention full spins.) constantly loading and unloading but it's manageable.

Would likely reach full 60 if I disabled AA, transcoding option isn't available (Hardware differences and that stuff you know, it seems it's CUDA after all.) so I can't compare against that.

So the game is not open world, texture low res, even shadows and reflections are painted in and not generated, lighting is baked ,you still dont get 60 fps guaranteed.

So what was the beneffit of Id Tech 5 over other game engines ?From the looks of things the artists efforts are the only thing making this game look somewhat good.

I feel somewhat anoyed by the fact that for those 60 frames on consoles the PC customer gets treated in this way ....by Id of all studios smh
