There is a option in the PS2 to enable optical out put. I have this way
PS2
-Optical(for sound)-
-Svideo (yellow cable(or the 3rd colour, white and red are for sound)-
Receiver- Speakers
Reciever- TV

He has enabled the digital ouput in the PS2 system settings but I think he has composite cables plugged in wrong. The optical cable cant be wrong because there is only one place each end can plug into as far as I know. If he uses the optical cable for audio, then he shouldnt need all three of the phono plugs attached, right? He will just need the yellow video cable conneted to his tv?

You are correct, He will just need the yellow, the yellow transports video signals and the other 2 transports right and left channels.
How you connect the video signals to your TV doesnt matter, what is important is to put the optical cable into the reciever, set on the reciever to play from the optical input and dont use the red/white cables as they arent needed.

Addition, you might have to change settings in some PS2 games. Going to check out some of my ps2 games.
Ok, from the start the games have atleast stereo so you should hear some sound, and then in games you have to enable 5.1. If you arent hearing any sound then I have no clue :/

I think he REALLY wants the surround sound for Killzone. He never seems to play many other games although I know he is buying Area51 this week! If he uses the optical cable as well as the red and white audio cables will that cause a problem?

That shouldnt change anything at all. You would just get sound from the reciever and and from your TV. I have no clue why it doesnt work for you. All I did was to choose on my reciever to play from the optical input and thats it.
And on the Ps2 I choose optical out.

is their a button on the theater setup to switch to different systems??
Like on a TV you can Switch to AV1 (for lets say the DVD Player), AV2 (for VCR), AV3 (for Sky Digital Box) and S-Video etc...

I read that you have to play a movie DVD on the PS2 and set the audio options on the DVD to enable DTS on the console?

i didn't read all this crap but the yellow cable is NOT s-video, it is a crappy cable that no one should use! use scart or real s-video for video, and an optical cable for sound. how can you have trouble with this? buy an optical cable and attach it to both your surround and your ps2 and you are done.
most ps2 games only have surround during the cutscenes tho.
don't i need some magical illegal thing?
