^^ It is. That's the only reason I loaded OnLive to test; I wanted to see what DE looked and ran like. Out of the half-dozen games I tested, DE was the only one that didn't look blurry or macroblocked with hideous screen tearing. The mouse input lag was still a little too much to fully enjoy the game.

The visual quality left a lot to be desired - but I guess that will get better in time. I'd never use it as my primary, not for any reason, but for people who want to play "on the TV!! lolol!" or want a "cheap" way of playing latest games without having a decent PC? I guess it's not the worst deal in the world. For them!
Still.... I'm surprised it works at all. |
I tried it too some time ago (the Red Faction Armageddon demo) but it was completely unplayable for me, partly because of the service itself and partly because the network infrastructures here aren't exactly satisfying

They've got a point, you know? The whole idea of OnLive isn't just the streaming technology.. but also the FARM nature of the host machines. Epic's "The Samaritan" demo is out of the reach of most home gamers at the moment... but with OnLive? Having dozens of gaming PCs all chained and working together? Yeah, that brings the possibility closer.

@ sabin
never thought of that. But is there a point to it considering the streaming quality and input lag?
Sounds like one of those spiteful sidesteps of technological advancement and I hate those.

System like Onlive could work great for things like TBS strategy games, where quick response time is not need. But mouse input and cursor rendering needs to be handled locally, instead on server (to prevent lag).

It really doesn't matter if a lot of people's internet connections are still shit. They can improve their hardware all day, if they're still pushing it down the same congested pipe.

For countries like Canada, OnLive wont be very popular due to ISPs capping bandwith. Same reason why Netflix is mad at Canadian ISPs cause people wont sign up.

Same story here, with the difference that it's the overall internet quality which is extremely obsolete and not suitable for such services. Nobody gives a damn obviously, technology in Italy is still a tabu

Don't listen to their PR bullshit. Access to GPU does not scale, period.
I.e. they are still using one dedicated GPU per session. And I don't see anything they can do about it (apart from moving from PC architecture to some custom hardware).
Using this approach, with small userbase and enough VC money they can live for couple of years more (or even more, look at Groupon which looses money like a black hole).

I'm not listening to OnLive's PR nonsense, I'm paying attention to the facts. Linking multiple machines together into a farm offers vastly more processing and rendering power. Fact.

Just tried it, I'm not from the uk so I can't comment on latency but the image quality is horrible. It uses 7-8 mbit of my bandwidth which is max for onlive. And most of the games are not even on high settings.

And you get that quality with full bandwidth usage, I highly doubt latency affects image quality. The picture quality I get is pretty much the same as Digital Foundry's review.
