I played WoW when it was out and during the betas, and now I'm playing the Diablo 3 Beta, and I can tell you Diablo 3 doesn't feel like WoW, but feels like Diablo 2.
The game is good, but maybe i'm beginning to be too old for these, because just like StarCraft II, it feels like the same game, just in "HD"... Don't get me wrong, it's the best hack & slash i've ever played, but when I played Diablo 2 back then, I was more amazed (a lot more !), than Diablo 3, that's for sure.
Same for WoW during its betas, it felt more fresh (you gotta admit, even if you are now a wow hater like me, that WoW had nice new ideas), while in Diablo 3 it seems they took what was good in Diablo 2 and WoW, mixed them, and we get Diablo 3. Sounds like a good idea if you ask me, except if you expect new stuff. The only new thing that I liked is that you can interact with the setting to kill your enemies, sadly it was poorly done since it's really scripted (hear by that that the "stones" are blinking in all colors, to really tell you you can interact with THIS one, but not the others :/).
IF you have any questions, let me know !

After watching the Yogcast videos it seems to me the game still has a dark and gloomy atmosphere. Now it may not be exactly the same sort of gloomy as in Diablo 2 but it definitely doesn't remind me of WoW, and I've played that for at least a year.

Removal of skill spending just like in WoW, I mean mainstreaming things is never good from my perspective.

You actually do have skill points and 3 different skill trees per class to spend your points in, in WoW. There are no skill points or tree in D3, so I don't see the resemblance.
Also, D2 was brighter than D3:

Comparing to what? Diablo II? Diablo 1 was dark/serious game, inedded, but D2? No fucking way. Not to mention we've seen like 10% of the whole D3 so far so it's quite premature to say we won't see some dark shit in later acts.
Radicalus wrote: | Then to me, it seems the talent trees were "mainstreamed" to be exactly like WoW. |
Skill system in D2 was broken as hell and by the way, calling the skill system in D3 streamlined is a really good joke. I suggest you go and take a look and something called "runes".
Radicalus wrote: | It didn't evolve the genre, like how even some of the d2 clones did. From the information I gathered, and that's pretty much, games like Grim Dawn and Path of the Exile have way more options to customize your character. |
Matter of taste. I'm in PoE beta actually and got mixed feelings about its character progression. Passive skills tree is vast but very unimaginative. The moment of levelling up my char in PoE has zero excitement for me. The skill system is nice, though, but other than that this game is too shallow for now. DIII has way more depth.
Radicalus wrote: | Removal of skill spending just like in WoW, I mean mainstreaming things is never good from my perspective. |
Matter of taste. Skill points have it's pluses and minuses and DIII skill system if far from being streamlined imho.
Radicalus wrote: | But look, I was never that much of a fan of Diablo anyway, although from all the Blizz games, after the starcraft franchise this is the only other franchise that ever gained even my slightest interest. |
I'm huge fan of DIII and don't like some of DIII concepts (RMAH, no cooldown of some sort for skill swapping midfight, not enough slots on skill belt) but overall I'm happy with what I've seen so far. I just hope comparing it to WoW will stop, it's so annoying and so far from truth it's stupid...

Actually, that screenshot doesn't mean shit.
The D2 screenshot was with 7 players. Although I can only see 3 in that screenshot, EACH player has a "light radius" which could be quite high.
In the D3 screenshot, there is one player.........and there will never be a screenshot with more than 4 players in D3, because of consoles.

D2 does look brighter to me. One big thing is that the skills in D2 were light sources, so your chain lightning or charged bolt or firebolts or whatever would cast light and have their own light radius as they traveled across the screen. If you've ever played D2 with 7 other people you know it is a very bright, very chaotic, psychedelic mess. D3 looks much more subdued

One character, completely vanilla game and options, didn't touch a single one.
I love D2, probably played through it more than you. I am however not retarded enough to say that its skill trees were perfect, because on most classes, about 40% of the trees are useful and that 40% is responsible for 3-4 useful builds you can make, so you do the math on how "good" they actually were.
Graphically it had the atmosphere, but was it dark? Fuck no. In terms of pure lighting, D3 is much darker because it can actually like, do lighting to begin with.
As far as the actual overall atmosphere goes, I'm not gonna judge it based on videos where retards can't keep their mouths shut. From what I've seen so far, I think it does it right, but I'll reserve my judgement until I get to play it myself.
Edit: fixed images.

about the skills in d2, until 1.09 they were kinda lame, basicly people levelled to 30 and only then started to use level 24/30 skills. With 1.10 they added synergies, which made a lot of lower tier skills very viable (Fireball anyone ? ^^).
So, D2 skill trees were quite badly done at first, i agree, but since 1.10, the skill trees allowed a for a lot of different builds, since synergies made so many lower skills useful.
and for the light, werelds, your screenshot shows a character around level 1-3 with white gear at best. Higher level gear ads a lot "+x to light radius" which increases the light around a character, so if you have 4 high/er characters with such gear, the light circles overlap a lot, adding a lot of light.

Either people are dramatically romanticizing the Diablo games, leading to unreal expectations, or people just bitch because it's the new trend. This new Diablo 3 looks and plays exactly like Diablo should be from the gameplay vids. The very early pics and artwork was too cartoony and shiny, but that is gone. Complaining about the HUD and UI? WTF? It's as standard as it gets for an action RPG. Skills were mainstreamed? Oh come on, this discussion has been done a few pages ago. Diablo was never complex.
Will it redefine teh action RPG genre? Hell no, Blizzard never redefines anything (except WoW). Will it be the one thing to rule them all? Hell no, it'll be a great action RPG detailed as shit since it's a Blizzard product (yes Blizzard is still master in detail as shown with SC2). Will it make you go "OMFG this is the best shit I've ever played, it completely rocked my socks off"? Doubtfull, it'll just be the best thing in the action RPG genre. Evolution in the action RPG genre has been nihil except for graphics. Sadly this is the best thing we'll get, but it'll still be awesome fun.

True, synergies fixed a lot, but that didn't make the skills themselves useful
And that was exactly my point with the screenshot. This is an ideal situation (level 1 + no gear except what you start with, for the record), it's only going to get brighter from here. Even then, the two are equally "dark".

Rofl are you serious? 4 players because of consoles? HAHAHHHHAHAAHAHHA. Hope you're trolling.
This game hasn't been influenced by consoles AT ALL. At this point there isn't even clear if there will be a version and even if it will (they're barely just hiring people NOW to see if a port would be possible) the game would suffer such huge modifications it wouldn't even be diablo anymore.
You really think changing the number of players from 4 to 8 would be so hard? Yeah like typing 4 instead of 8 in a spreadsheet. THAT HARD HOLY SHIT MUST BE CONSOLE RELATED LOL.
If they "wanted to dumb things down" so they could port to consoles you wouldn't have targetted skills anymore for one. That will never work with a controller. It's obvious to anyone who isn't oblivious of these things and just like to hate "becuz ya no it's trendy".

One of the biggest things i'm looking forward to from watching the beta leaked video's is the RAGDOLL effects. Sounds stupid, but looking back on Titan Quest and Sacred 2.....was very satisfying watching dead bodies fly/roll.

Did you even read my post? Guess not.
Ofcourse diablo will come to consoles, but they barely started hiring people to work on that console version. So at best expect it in a couple of years if not more.
Also the diablo that will come to consoles WILL NOT BE the same diablo as on PC. The control scheme will never work on controllers. Trying to aim spells on the ground while also moving rapidly in the opposite direction and in general having fast reaction times with a gamepad WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
Please stop being silly and all derpish and think.
PS: Why would i need to "prepare my anus" when the console version that might come out in a couple of years doesn't affect me at all?
