It's as amazing as that first taste I got with the demo. Deus Ex 3, Portal 2, Hard Reset, my three favorite games of 2011.

It's incredibly polished, varied enough and I love the challenging difficulty. Kudos to the team, it's hard to believe they came out of the blue with such a good game.

My thoughts exactly, but I'd also add TW2 in there, which I enjoyed. Overall, I haven't bought as many games as I did in 2011 for quite a few years. Might even be 4-5.

Hoped for something like Painkiller, but it's not quite so (judging from first level). What a shame...

Meh, not my cup of tea fighting charging robots. Lack of weapon variety doesnt help also (not counting upgrades, it doesn't change model/animation much).

I feel the exact same way but at the very least you have to have debris falling from the robots and lots of destruction and this game has some, thats why I love it but like you I very much prefer dismemberment and blood everywhere Very Happy

Damn I already installed this but I hesitate between start playing or wait till I finish Dead Island (still playing Act 2 in the old town around 36%). Don't want to get all mixed up.

You sir are almost worse than Kojima. Almost.

Quote:
"The zombie idea I have is a bit different," he told our colleagues at Edge magazine. "Imagine a large town where half the inhabitants are zombies. Users would subscribe, get inside the town and get bitten. At that stage they become undead and can't control their character - all they can do is modify the camera angles... They'd see their character attacking humans and have to pay just to watch!"

Sounds... erm, expensive. Kojima continues: "The only way they could end it is by opening another account, hunting themselves down and killing themselves. Of course, the problem is that your second character can get bitten as well."

And if you built up a concrete number of BSODs/crashes, it'd melt your face and make the computer blow itself into smithereens.

I've said this countless times, 2011 seems to be for me pretty much the best year in gaming since the current generation of consoles were released.

Bah, fuck, so close this time. 5th try atm, last wave (I think) got me - fucking rocket spewing bastard! No matter how hard I focus, every mistake costs me around 50-60 hp, and there's not enough health packs around ...

Once I finish, this will be in the top 10 hardest games I ever finished, insane difficulty is truly for the insane!

Since there was a insane difficulty, I started playing at hard and I'm at the third level but it's really becoming a bit too hard Smile.
Is there any difference at all between the two weapons? Is one stronger than the other upon certain types of enemies?

Insanity complete! That was quite the ride, damnit! I'd say it took around 8 ours actual playing, I think. Perhaps more. Atlas was still the hardest fight for me, if only because I died 11 times before succeeding there (although, that was due to bad approach). Constructor took I don't know how many times exactly, but I died 9 times on the level in total.

OK, so mini-review time! (Insanity)

I'll start with the weak points, to get them out of the way:
*Story - wtf?! So many unanswered things, so many questions, not enough explanation. Clearly it was rushed together, sad, as story would have made it great!
*Length - not short by modern measures, but when it finished, I definitely hungered for more, loads more.
*Movement speed - a tad on the slow side. This, I felt, was an artificial means of making the game harder, since you couldn't really dodge as well as you wanted to, and you had to time it exactly right, one wrong dodge meant death!

And now onto what I liked:

Old school shooter. I don't really need to elaborate, yet I will anyway: this is a game, where the shooting is as fine as it gets, gentlemen! You have to aim good, you have to dodge like mad, staying in one place makes you dead! No BS like regenerating health or cover mechanics, here you have to make sure you do every encounter optimally, or you die on the next one. I love how the game simply gives you no choice, but to man up, and face your enemies! This all leads to the fact, that this game is a PC shooter. No compromises made due to controller/derps. More of this should be made. MUST be made!

AI - I liked the AI, it was relentless, and if you moved in predictable patterns, you were basically dead. Shooting enemies could only be fooled by constant shifts in your strafe direction, and that's good. I think the enemies weren't very varied, but they were varied enough, each of the requiring a different approach in both the way you dodge and the way you kill them most effectively.

Graphics - I think no one here is contesting how great this game looks AND plays, it's main trick probably is, that the robots are not that high poly, but the texture quality fools you. The game looks great, and some of the art is really spectacular for a game coming from a studio this small. I often found myself just simply looking at the architecture, which was varied also, and took you to many locations. In certain places, the lighting was absolutely stunning.

Level design - although linear, going through the game was very enjoyable, some of the scenery were great, and I like the verticality of the design. Often you would end up looking down/back at where you were, and that was great. Hidden places were also not that easy to find, sure at the beginning, yes, but then later on you had to pay attention. I really liked how the levels looked, and the places you had to go. Like a secret on a pillar above metros rushing below you or when jumping from ledge to ledge in the very nicely crafted and lit medical laboratory.

No quicksave: I know this is not tradition in PC games, but I found this to add a whole dimension to the enjoyment of my game. I was very cautious because of this, always on the edge, and it made me focus just that much more. I also got scared here and there. It added great challenge to some of the harder encounters of the game, and I like, how you had to do these boss fights from start to finish without being able to save/relax. Last boss took around, I think, 10 minutes (give or take, I don't know, all I could concentrate on was the monitor), that's a challenge with no saves.

TL;DR: If you're an FPS fan do yourself a favor, and buy this game. It has its problems, it's not that long, but it's quality time from start to finish!

For me, there were a few really good weapons I used: at the beginning the charge on the NRG. Then shotgun to handle crowds with reload upgrade. The mortar-very good for huge crowds, even better if you place it on something. Then rocket launcher, later with laser guiding, and finally railgun wit hrecharge speed. I found these really important.

Great review.

About your tl;dr, the game hasn't even charted on the top 10 on Steam, and pretty much every respectable indie does on its launch. People probably think "I'll wait for the $10 Steam sale" because it's a Painkilleresque shooter. Which isn't a bad thing per se, I'm thinking the same thing Razz

Just saying, this won't do the sales all the other popular indie games have done on Steam (eg E.Y.E or Terraria). Or it might not even sell the minimum acceptable amount they were hoping. Who knows.

edit Also it's not on the "Top games by current player count" list: http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

The lowest entry has 273 players, so less than that have played it today concurrently.

Yes, I checked those statistics, and it's a damn shame! Damn shame, I say! Here's what,I hope more people buy it, when it gets a price drop. Also, the reviews didn't help either, most of them stating the game can be done in under 4 hours - which is a fucking lie, unless easy is radically easier than insane. And who the bloody hell plays a shooter like this on easy, when they could instead go for the challenge, what would be the point?!

Ok,.. I didn't even look at weapon upgrades yet, I was upgrading the armor instead. Guess I'll do that because enemies takes an eternity to kill and both guns are equally weak with their basic attacks.

Currently I switch between the RPG and Railgun and haven't bothered with much else, they're slow but kills most anything in one to two hits minus the "gorilla" and it's upgraded variant which takes around four hits and ten or so hits respectively.
(Might be a bit more for that upgraded variant due to it's heavy armor but I got the achievement where you kill one in under 30 seconds fairly easily.)

also , atmospher is very nice imo.
so i can say that this game is nice surprise.
