Bethesda has given us another tour through the world of Skyrim, this time focusing on what happens when you go off in search of your own adventures.

"You remember Oblivion's dungeons, right?"

I'm still trying to forget.

"Later on, you're off adventuring through one of those fancy new dungeons when you spot a shiny vein of iron in the wall. You pull out your pickax and chip away at it until you get a nice supply of raw ore. Then you go find yourself a weapons forge, and suddenly you're able to create a fancy new leather-hilted iron dagger"

... Iron dagger...

In every TES title so far I always skip that low-grade crap materials.

Arena offers steel equipment in the first sewer if you survive that far, can even start with some decent stuff if you are lucky.

Daggerfall has a rare chance of giving you a ebony dagger during the start sequence (mage oriented classes.) or elven for some other classes thus cutting out those again.

(Daggerfall and Arena if I remember correctly both had unmarked materials being something like bronze I suppose - both also classed leather and chain as crap armor with the rest material specific stuff being heavy warrior gear, haha.)

Morrowind had some neat equipment but first trader sells a silver shortsword thus outclassing the entire iron and steel (And native materials like chitin and bone.) entirely.

Oblivion gives you a steel shortsword during the intro/tutorial which is quickly replaced by silver again by exploring or shopping. Razz

Perhaps Skyrim will be a bit different, Iron doesn't quite look like shit this time after all.
(That warrior character they use for marketing is in iron armor, nord style.)

It's new for TES (i believe?), they didnt say it's never ever been done in other games. I still don't see Bioware games having NPC schedeules or even weather or day/night cycles (first time i saw it was in Ultima7, like 15 years ago). Every new RPG except Bethesda's has removed swiming and diving too.. I still think they're quite far ahead when it comes to immersion / interactivity compared to the compeition.

And there's the proper Dark-Elf (female, with that DLC dog or what it was.).
(As a comparison to the "wood elf" pictures earlier I mean, these have more pronounced bone structure for the forehead/temple area and chins.)

That doesn't do shit for me if their games are crap like Oblivion. Every similar rival game from that time is now better than Oblivion. I know, there are not much... actually there's only Two Worlds and Gothic III I think, which are way better games. Also, it doesn't matter that they never said that hasn't been done before, it doesn't make them better in any way. They finally decided to implement a thing that's quite old in RPGs, a thing that even modders put in Nehrim. Well done, Bethesda, well done...

Who said it makes them better than anyone else, it's just really nice that they're adding even more of those little details as opposed to other RPG devs that seems to take away those little details more and more for every game (see Gothic3/Risen/Arcania..).

I still like Gothics, Risen, TW1-2, but they really lack the detail that a Bethesda games has where every object (except a tiny few) can be picked up and often used for something, every door or drawer can be opened etc. If you want to swim or dive you can, no other games has that kind of attention to detail, and imo it really helps immerse myself into the world.

I prefer them to look realistic than "prettified" but I don't mind how others prefer it and it is easily changed via mods. Smile
(There's thousands of female-only mods on the Nexus sites by now I imagine so it won't take long until several NPC overhauls appear for this title too plus the usual body, face, outfit replacers and all that stuff.)

EDIT: Dark-Elves were (arguably.) beautiful once though, very similar to Altmer actually though known as the Chimer when they arrived in Morrowind (Which no longer exists, heh.) having fair golden skin and such, however some random arse (Vivec and/or Almalexia, both partially retaining their Chimer appearance afterwards along with Sotha-Sil.) killed this Nerevar dude (Morrowind/TES3 story or rather part of it.) which upset Azura whom happened to be one of the sixteen known Daedra "princess" and thus she "punished" (cursed) the Chimer into becoming the ashen gray, red eyed and serious (seriously ugly) Dunmer or Dark-Elves. Razz

EDIT: I tend to immerse myself in background lore and stories where available though even if I made the above a bit more colorful and humorous but I think it improves the game or franchise for longer running titles when utilized. Smile
(Ultima, Might and Magic or Wizardry for example though Ultima declined quite a bit by the eight game - to put it midly, hah.)

I even know the backstory to Diablo 1 obscure as it was.
(Had a section in the manual for it which described the events before Tristram, funny but very neat of Blizzard to make more than a simple hack & slash and they really built upon this in Diablo 2 plus of course their other franchises like Warcraft and Starcraft.)

I'm a bit disappoint, I was planning to have a hawt dunmer bitch as my first character. Sad

There's probably nicer presets/faces to choose from, though.

No hawt bosmer or nordic feamles in those (I think that the blonde maid in one of the first screens was a nord). Sad

The Bosmer sounded like they used helium and the Breton males like someone kicked them in the nuts but I hope there's more diverce and ideally completely separated racial voice overs this time again. Smile
(Orc, Nord, Khajiit and Argonian should not all need the same voices, similarly Dunmer, Bosmer and Altmer would not require the same voices, Redguard was a exception but Breton and Imperial also shared voices. - This being from Oblivion but there's not much else to compare against since Morrowind and Oblivion were the only voiced previous TES titles and Morrowind only very lightly so in comparison but the above detail was a very nice touch and the little extra remarks such as skill and attribute specific responses, male and female greeting differences, native languages though mostly for Dunmner such as f'lah and n'wah insults and of course the nude response phrases and idle banter or pondering.)

Also I wonder if race specific eyes will return, Bosmer normally having black eyes for example albeit with this character generator this should ideally be far more customizable than a list of preset textures. Razz
(Dunmer perhaps as a example to control eye clarity, color tone, vibrancy and that bloodshot eye effect they had in Oblivion - that above first Argonian with the horns seem to imply this though comparing it's eyes to the other Argonian character screens.)

EDIT: That said 200+ different menus or rather those sliders all operating and interacting with another would also get a bit confusing to most players that not just spin the "randomize" button a few times. Razz
(Oblivion had like 50 or so but they were so interwoven so getting good results were not easy since you had to balance every single slider, hah I think every first created character ended up pretty horrible due to this.)

But I'd like to see improvements here still (hair, ears, eyes instead of just the face, neck also perhaps and so on.) and it sounds like they've done so at least to some degree. Smile

(Full control over character generation isn't a bad thing though one could probably spend hours perfecting the current character if everything was unlocked, hah.)

(Also helps modders a lot for custom NPC's, TESCS/GECK character customization tools were already far more expansive than the in-game ones though.)

Hah well there are already a lot of savegames created for Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas were the authors did their utmost to perfect their character, often this does require many third party mods though, hair especially but at times also texture modifications or entirely new races.
(There's a rather large list for Oblivion but Fallout 3 and New Vegas are also quite active with custom characters and races, Morrowind was too but the system was a bit different there so I didn't include it directly.)

I am certainly impressed by how some of the custom created characters turned out though, I couldn't get anything near that level of detail.
(Likely even with mods it would still look disfigured, I guess it works OK as a warrior build though every character being bulldog themed certainly gets old fast, heh.)

EDIT: Also I am very impressed with Bethesda's improvements to the characters so far, likely it's still the same body model type and skeleton bone structure for them all but it's still a nice improvement.
(Hopefully followed by more fluid animations but it looks OK in the trailers so far at least, compared to their earlier titles it's also improved a bit.)

I'm fine with how they look here. My comment was in regard to people complaining the female dark elf is not pretty enough.
