3DS price slash: Nintendo chops a third off RRP

Nintendo will chop around a third off the price of 3DS worldwide next month, following lacklustre sales in the early part of 2011.

3DS' RRP will drop from $249 to $169.99 in the US on August 12. A cut to the European trade price will come on the same day. Nintendo is yet to confirm the exact drop for the EU, but has told CVG that it will be "around a third".

Australia will also benefit on August 12, with 3DS dipping from $350 to $250. Meanwhile, Japan will see a price drop on August 11 - to 15,000, down from 25,000.

Nintendo announced it first quarter (Q1) results this morning, revealing sales of just 0.7 million for the 3D handheld console in the three months ending June 30. 3DS was released in March in the US and Europe and February in Japan.

The Japanese firm said that the markdown had been made to "create momentum for Nintendo 3DS and accelerate its market penetration toward the year-end sales season, when the lineup for the applicable software shall be enriched".

A European Nintendo spokesperson told CVG: "[We] can confirm that Nintendo of Europe will be reducing the European trade price of Nintendo 3DS to retailers by around a third from 12th August 2011, as part of a global trade price reduction initiative. The ultimate price to consumers is, of course, determined by retailers, however we look forward to consumers benefiting from much lower retail prices very soon."

Nintendo boss takes 3DS sales blame, 50% pay cut

Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata is to take a 50 percent pay cut after claiming the that the blame for poor early 3DS sales lies at his door.

Addressing shareholders in Tokyo today, Iwata said (via Nikkei): "I feel heavily responsible for this kind of announcement we had to make.

"For cuts in fixed salaries, I'm taking a 50 percent cut, other representative directors are taking a 30 percent cut, and other execs are taking a 20 percent cut," he added, according to Kotaku.

Iwata is said to earn roughly $2 million a year and design lead Shigeru Miyamoto $1.2 million.

The decision to slash the price of the 3DS less than six months into its lifetime wasn't part of Nintendo's original strategy, but Iwata said it would help retailers plan for the end-of-year sales period and encourage developers to stick with the platform. The company will now make a loss on every 3DS sold.

Iwata also reiterated that Nintendo doesn't intend to sell its games on non-Nintendo platforms.

Thirdly, for existing owners or people who buy a 3DS before the August 12th price cut;

Free 3DS games for early adopters detailed, dated

Following today's unexpected 3DS price cut announcement, Nintendo said it would offer 20 free downloadable games to early adopters in a bid to prevent them "regretting purchasing" the system.

The 3DS Ambassador Programme is open to anyone who owns a 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before August 12.

Beginning September 1, eligible users will be able to download ten NES games for free including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda. These will be released later in the year as paid downloadable games for other 3DS owners.

By the end of 2011, Nintendo will also offer Ambassadors ten exclusive Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These will include Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Minigame Mania and Mario vs. Donkey Kong. Nintendo says it currently has no plans to make these games available to the general public on 3DS in the future.

No matter what you think about Nintendo or their products, one still has to admire the man for so publicly taking the blame - and for actually undergoing a voluntary 50% salary cut. That's... wow. Not to mention the price cut on the machine itself is going to be a great thing for the customers, who will now be able to pick the machine up for a lot less than it originally cost. The Ambassador Program is a nice touch as well, offering early adopters something as a kind of "thank you" plan. Not to mention the exclusivity as the GBA titles won't be available to anyone else other than Ambassadors.

Gonna agree with paintface here, the reason the system is floundering is not because of price, its because it has no games worth buying.

slashing prices and giving people a few crummy roms isn't going to fix things in the long run if they dont get a ton of games.
