Quote:
We recently reported on how Driver: San Francisco will require a constant internet connection to play. It’s a controversial measure put in place to defend against piracy, and we don’t like it. We don’t like pirates either, mind.

Ubisoft see the DRM as a success. Speaking to us earlier today, a Ubisoft representative admitted that the developer has seen “a clear reduction in piracy of our titles which required a persistent online connection, and from that point of view the requirement is a success”.

Ubisoft have traditionally been the developer with some of the harshest DRM in the industry. In the games that use their always online “connected services”, players can no longer to play if no internet connection is detected. The publisher first implemented this always-online DRM with Settlers 7. Since then, it’s featured in Silent Hunter V and Assassin’s Creed 2 and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.

Sadly, legitimate players often take the brunt of such security measures. Intermittent internet connections and server issues at Ubisoft’s end can stop PC Gamers from playing the game entirely. Not cool.

Similarly frustrating measures were also introduced in the recent Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, where offline players were restricted to playing a small selection of the characters. Capcom later withdrew the DRM after fan criticism.

Finished AC:B, SH5 I've played a lot but a bug prevented me from moving forward (couldn't find the second carrier I need to sink, because there is none, after years of searching). So yeah.

No matter how much I like a Ubi game with this DRM I would never buy it.

Pirated version = yours to play. Can't say that about the one you actually buy which should be yours to play.

Didn't Ubi remove the "Always on" requirement for AC2 & AC:B ?

I haven't tested it myself by unplugging my internet connection. I once got a message about being offline while playing AC:B but it was only there for a minute or two, but I was not prevented from playing and the next time I loaded up my save game, I noticed that my In-game progress was intact.

That's why I though that Ubi patched out the "Always on" requirement.

Ps. My memory might be less than good, but I think it was announced sometime early this year that Ubi had patched out the requirement for these games.

Pps. Found this about AC:B

Doubt it'll ever become popular. Maybe in the far future when we have free and stable internet connections everywhere, but not yet.

And while they might have seen a decrease in piracy, that alone is not the goal. The goal is to get those very pirates to buy the game. And frankly I doubt the numbers of pirates they might have gotten to buy the game by making it more difficult to crack will make up for the sheer numbers of sales they lost by implementing the DRM in the first place. Not to mention the bad reputation and expenses with customer service regarding the new DRM system.

I agree. They talk about non pirated games but not about sales figures which is a total fail on their part. Those numbers are the thing that drive a company forward but since it's Ubisoft we're talking about I'm not surprised.

PC version canceled citing technical reasons to support higher resolutions.

How the fuck can you see a clear reduction in piracy? Laughing Do they rent out these crytal balls??

normal consumer sees two things : buy anal drm OR buy console version without drm ... Ubisoft our DRM was a success sheepeople bought more console versions

Laughing

haven't they said something in the lines, they lose money on games when they showed they had 1bln EURO revenue BUT 0 EURO PROFIT LULZ ...

no money management skillz ... check
sabotaging they own PC sells ... check
loosing per month about 50mln euro for DRM servers ... check
alienating they own creators so much they escape from them to THQ or EA ,that created theirs main AAA Ips that are the firmaments of Ubisoft capital ... triple check [Clint Hocking creator of Splinter Cell , Patrice Désilets creator of Assassin Creed etc...]
creating they tools to fight used games sales by cutting half of the game and forcing you to log in tough U-play ... check

Laughing

Typical publisher way of thinking:

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF POOR SALES:

step 1: is the game on PC?
- Yes: go to step 2
- No: blame developer

step 2: does the game have DRM?
- Yes: blame developer
- No: blame piracy & add DRM

In other words: it's NEVER the fault of the moronic CEOs that force their retarded ideas on the developers, forcing them to add or remove stuff because they have a "hunch" it would make for a better game (read: make it easier/more appealing for the derp derp DEEEEEERP people).

I find it hard to pay for games anymore because I know that almost every game on the market, has signs of publisher meddling that harms the quality and I don't want to support that. I didn't pirate a single Ubisoft game so of course piracy went down - a lot of people couldn't be bothered with it. Does this mean they bought it? Fuck no. Heck, a lot of legit gamers didn't buy it either. And what did Ubisoft do? Go "yeah this DRM wasn't the best idea?" no! They went "bad developer! Making bad games!" *facepalms*

Seriously, that Norway killer should have done his fun in the boardrooms for publishers. People that dumb shouldn't waste so much oxygen.[/list]
