Friggin thunder destroyed my phone system again! Argh!
2nd time this year. The first time, it even killed my 2nd PC because the electric current went through the network cable and killed it...

It also killed a tree in my backyard, but fuck him...

That's why I unplug every cable when a big storm is coming. But sometimes when it want to happen it will , no matter what protections do you have..they can reduce the risk but nobody is 100% safe.

Won't work since it went through our local phone lines. Twice now...
I have no fucking idea how that's even possible...

Guess what, right after I unplugged my PC and got up standing again, the fucker went into the phone lines. I got very lucky there since I unplugged my network cables too this time (don't need my main pc fried too).
And boom, everything phone related was fried.

Last year big storm again..very common here during summer , my friend unplugged everything but forgot only one..and he thought he was safe. When thunderstorm was over he wanted to watch TV ( he had LCDTV ~800 euros ) it was an unpleasant surprise..it wont work..fucker Laughing went through TV cable from cable company. He than tried to blame cable company but additional court expensses made him quit the process..

Few days ago it was really scary thunderstorm here , lightning strike was in some guy's backyard 200m from my house..So know I don't want to risk it at all , I unplug everything. Storms only last here ~1h..so I wont die without internets for that long.. Laughing

I unplug only my router. All the rest has surge protection.

You can install surge protectors in phone lines as well.
Probably lighting strike induced voltage in phone line that was connected to you modem and destroyed it. Especially if you don't have underground phone lines.
The best practice is to unplug power, modem, network, antenna or any other long cable that is plugged into equipment (PC, TV, satellite receiver, etc.). But if lightning strikes close enough nothing will save your equipment.

No, no, strangely only my phones (+ the costly ISDN phone) were destroyed. Internet (ADSL) worked fine. And there was no power outauge either.

And the lightning strike that caused this went right in a tree (luckily it wasn't burning but still destroyed and we removed it today) in my garden behind the house.
Phonelines are underground here too Very Happy

Too bad about your phone, but considering that lightning struck a tree in your backyard I think that went quite good. Smile

Phone lines? What is that? All we got here are underground wiring and cable and satellite. Never heard of phone lines or seen telephone poles in quite some time.
