What's less than optimal about that other than you're not getting any of the "expansions" that came later? |
I know, but the content in the expansion is required on a lot of the popular maps/mods/servers. This limits you from playing any map you want to online with anyone you want to. I mean I understand if you don't want to spend money on a game/this type of game really isn't for you. But if it is, it's just stupid to not pay the $29 for the whole thing, especially since it promotes the development of more games like this one.

Been meaning to ask: does ACE make it harder and/or just more complex/realistic? Fine either way, just want to know what to expect.
Also @fisk: what kind of problems did you encounter with steam?

1. OA didn't work (said my key was invalid) was a problem with the installer (solved by running steam as administrator and doing a fix install)
2. Combined operations didn't work, and it was a chore to mod the thing due to everything being in two separate folders (copied addons-folder from Arma II-directory to the OA-directory)

Didn't have problem with either here. Both games work, and when starting as CO, both game's things are there, and can play on servers without a hitch.
Trying to mod things now with that six-updater thingie.

I think I'll stick to vanilla+RWS. ACE was just too bulky for my rig, it takes ages to load anything with that monster on.

Ace makes it much more realistic, adds way better ballistics, range charts for rifles and laser range finding, ability to adjust scopes(Ctrl+V),Tons of new weapons options, ropes for helicopters so you can fastrope, working earplugs, goggles, gasmasks and CS gas, several kinds of mines and claymores, tripwires,Too many things to list here, its simply as good as you can get in a simulation and it continues to be added to and improved.

Seems to me that the game that's supposed to be the best military sim you could get shouldn't need a 3rd party mod to make it "much more realistic" and have "way better ballistics." Ballistics is mostly math. It shouldn't be hard for them to get it right in the first place.
Actually, the only thing ballistic related I see in the ACE feature list is for rockets and it's really a minor issue. A lot of what ACE adds, from looking at their feature list, is small misc things that really aren't important. A lot of those things are far from increasing the realism as well.
It'd be nice to try ARMA2 out and see if it sucks any less than the bugfest pile of shit of a demo they released and never patched. Fanboy praise does no more for me than obviously biased magazine reviews. So my opinion of this is based solely off the demo (and the demo sucks. badly.) Alas, there will be no playing of ARMA2 until GMG gets their shit together. Capsule still isn't working to even start the damn game downloading

Yesterday I couldn't even log-in, everything was completely overwhelmed by the huge traffic; today is better but it seems that a lot of people are indeed experiencing constant fade kicks http://forums.greenmangaming.com/topic/152/ Meh!

i'm also waiting for the new keys to arrive, they've run out.
btw i think they don't give out "normal" cd keys but instead an encrypted version, so maybe you can paste it in the registry (arma keys are encrypted in the registry).

You dont actually get a key you need to enter, and they indeed look different its a 4-digit key (xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx)
Once the game is installed, Capsule will add this key somewhere to the register.
When you start the game for the first time, Securom activation pops up with the key already entered, so you just need to click activate.
It activated without a problem, but yes Fade does kick in.
I dint even notice it untill a couple matches, You'll know for sure when you fire a handgun.
And Capsule installer is a pain in the ass, it repeats the same process twice while extracting
