Weird, cause you have to activate in the game itself.
Intel i7 6700K, RTX470 Super, Kingston HyperX Fury 32GB

Not with a Steam copy.

Actually, as far as I remember, you had to still manually activate it (Vietnam that is) by typing in the key in the game even with the Steam version...

Fair enough.
Still wouldn't work.
Quote: | You have bought the base game somewhere else, and someone has gifted you Vietnam on Steam - well... Long story. Sometimes the Steam client stops him/her from doing the gifting. Sometimes the gifting will succeed; Steam will then know that you have Vietnam, but you will not see it in the Steam client because you do not have the base game. Therefore you will not be able to view the 16-digit code for Vietnam. Contact Steam support to resolve this. |

DL'ed Civ V this morning, was getting 750-800 kb/s, slightly below the average speed (1MB/s).

Valve does indeed suck balls everytime a sale or big release happens. You'd think after the 189376th time their servers can't handle it when something big happens, they should learn. With all the money they make, setting up an extra server park shouldn't be a problem no? Thank god I rarely buy big titles.

Keep in mind that most of the money goes straight to Gabe's favourite pizza delivery service...

I've never had any serious issues with the download speed, which locations are you guys using? :/
Still, considering they've been pushing out between 300 and 500 gigabit for some time now, it's less a matter of "setting up an extra server park" as it is of "finding a new place to set up a new server park that can handle these ridiculous loads". Manage a highly loaded server yourself before saying shit like this, it's really not as easy as you think - trust me. Especially not with a highly efficient distributed network like Steam, where data integrity is of the utmost importance.
DE-CIX and AMS-IX (the two biggest IX's in the world, Amsterdam and Frankfurt) both "only" push out somewhere between 700 gigabit and 1 terabit on average - On moments like this, Valve's gonna be responsible for about half of that. Given the bad infrastructure in the UK, Brits will be fucked regardless; London only manages about half what Amsterdam and Frankfurt handle. The Scandinavian ones are babies compared to these, and the American ones are even smaller than that. You guys really underestimate just how much traffic is being pushed out, it's not the servers, it's the infrastructures - most are simply not able to handle this kind of bandwidth being pushed out from a single centre
The Dutch content server(s) work fine for me, I haven't had them drop below 6-7 megabytes/sec, except for once when my ISP cocked up. Modem restart fixed it, was back on 9 after that. Perhaps for those with good routing towards these can try the Dutch ones. With a bit of luck, the traffic can pass through routers that aren't fucked for bandwidth in your area already.
Perhaps when you consider the numbers above, you guys might also consider how much it costs to keep Steam running as well as it does; and unless you're one of the retarded haters that hate Valve just because it's cool, you'll also know that their "cut" of Steam sales are very marginal (as testified by indie developers), and most likely go to maintaining the current network as it is anyway. I know I'm quite partial to Valve, but honestly? All the other piece of shit networks are nowhere near as stable and fast with this kind of bandwidth being pushed out.
