Quote:
So here’s an interesting thing. GamersGate are soon going to be launching an ad-support free gaming service. Details are sketchy at the moment, but there’s a big old timer counting down on their site, and a registration form for the beta on the same page. The blurb says: “GamersGate, the premier digital distribution service for games, today announced the launch of FreeGames, a free-to-play ad supported platform for PC and Mac games. FreeGames allows users to play and enjoy both PC and Mac titles free of charge after watching a short advertisement at the launch of the game. Gamers will be able to have up to five games available for free on their account at any time with the capability to add additional games.”

Hmm! I’ll drop them a line and find out exactly what they’re up to.

Yeah it'll probably be old ass games or crappy ass games.

Edit: Wait, it says GamersGate will be launching that "soon" but the countdown says 83 days. What the christ, how is 83 days soon.

I'm ok with free games that have ads. I think it's a model that hasn't been properly explored.

TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"

A few years ago there was a triplet of Ubisoft games ad-powered and free for a few months. It consisted of Far Cry, Rayman Raving Rabbids or whatever that was called, and PoP - Sands of Time. They were "half-new" back then, and I tried them all out. There were no ads whatsoever for some reason unknown to me, however Very Happy. I don't know why Ubisoft did not continue or anybody else tried that.

We've received an insane amount of interest for our FreeGames feature and the first round of beta will start on the 11th July.
Keep an eye on your inbox on Monday (4th July) - we will then be sending out invitations to the first round of beta testers!

I wish you luck on getting into the beta - there will be more chances later on for those who don't - and we look forward to seeing what you think Smile /gus

I got in, finally! Apparently the NDA states all I CAN say is "I got in" (Very Happy) and I'm not allowed to divulge information on anything relating to the content and way it works. What I will say is this;

The current selection is pretty small and every title is from the same publisher, which begins with P Very Happy

It's out and it's called "VOID" -- I was part of the beta for a while and the beta was infinitely better than what the final result ended up being. The beta gave you about 10 slots with which to add free-to-play games that you could play without strings, but now that the beta is over - you only get ONE slot to start with, though the game selection is slightly better, and you have to watch a 60s advert before each play. You can unlock other slots for TEN THOUSAND blue coins (retail cost of €7.50 so it's not entirely free to play these games)

http://www.gamersgate.com/void-about

You can also "upgrade" your game slots to make them more effective, such as shortening the cooldown time between when you can change the game for a new one, or such as allowing a Buddy to share your game as well. Each upgrade costs several thousand blue coins though and not a single one of the games is worth it. In fact, for the cost of upgrading the slots and sitting through adverts each time you want to play; you could no doubt buy any of these games as they're often budget titles that are on sale almost everywhere all the time. All in all; massively disappointing for the gamer, huge cash-cow for publishers and GG.

TY for heads up. Interesting concept. Too bad the game selection is fairly poor. However there are couple of games I could try, if I was desperate to play something new.
