Hi Guys. I am using MPCH for all my video playback and its great (especially new versions from that russian site)
I have output set to
VMR-9
3d surfaces
bilinear
VMR-9 mixer mode checked

My screen is strictly pc display. samsung 226bw which is connected via dvi and all set to default out of box settings (100 gamma, 75 contrast)

Its been bothering me for more than year or two now I think. Movies just seem DARK... I mean. Colors are vibrant and very good, Especially during daytime scenes. but when it comes to night/dark scenes its PITCH BLACK!... ok... ok.. I am able to see something but it does feel that its too dark. (same goes for brrip just as dvdrip)
i know all the deal that 0-255 and 16-235 black power, but setting shader mode to 16-235 makes movies indeed lighter in dark areas but for the sacrifice of true colors(especially black) for more shadey ones.

The point is. I dont have comparison of any type. I have only one PC display and I am not sure if movies just are made too look that way.
Yes. I have netbook and I watch movies on it and I even think that movies are as dark as on pc but somehow they are way more watchable on that netbook (Maybe I think its brighter becouse I am watching movies on netbook with screen up to my nose?)

Anyway: Say something Crying or Very sad Maybe You could posts screenshots of Your movies playback so I could compare with mine? For example Riddick, Pitch black, Leon the Professional, avatar, 300... Anything. I have plenty of movies on my hdd to compare Your screen with if that would be the case Wink

You are specialists about movies here!
btw. Just seen Sucker Punch on PC and It was very dark. Especially first scene with father. ohh... and I think that movie is fantastic! It just feel like an excuse to create such an unique fights and scenarios!

why do you need comparisons? just adjust the brightness/contrast to whatever suits you best...

you'll be able to tell easy enough if youve got it wrong after watching a movie all the way through (like if the sky is so bright its completely blown out, you know you have your contrast/brightness mix up too high...)

i mean thats what i do.. just play around with settings to find something that works. who cares what the movie is 'supposed' to look like... as long as its how YOU want it to look, thats all that matters.

It might also be MagicColor (at least, your 226 is the same as my 206 as far as I know). That dynamically fucks with your settings if you've got it turned on Smile

Adjusting brightness and contrast is not recommended and quite bad. It will not fix the problem I am suspecting here because it is not a problem which can be fixed by a constant shift.

I seems like an incorrect luminance levels problem. In digital video, there are two output levels, PC levels, which are full range, 0-255 luminance levels, and TV levels, which are 16-235 luminance levels. YV12 videos are usually stored in TV format, but not always (your encodes most probably are). Your monitor displays 0-255, and the conversion between these two is the culprit of most such problems. Usually the TV->PC goes smoothly, however sometimes, if the decoder does that conversion itself, and later another conversion is done at the renderer (VMR, EVR, etc.) level is done, meaning (TV->PC)->PC, this creates the problem you are experiencing, where dark scenes are very dark and bright scenes are very bright. A similar problem exists when the levels are not corrected and TV content is displayed as PC levels, and then black is displayed as dark gray (because black is 0 on the display, but sent as 16 from the video) and white is light gray (white is 255, video sends 235).

What you should do to fix is take a look at your display drivers' control panel and make sure you are in 0-255 mode, and then make sure that only one conversion is done. I would recommend CoreAVC because it allows you control over what it should consider for the input and what it should tell it is outputting.

Cheers,

Yes, it's good.

If you have nVidia, go to the nV CP, and go to "Change video image settings". There should be a radio button there to "With nV settings" and then in the Levels drop down, make sure 0-255 is used.

Then in CoreAVC, make sure both input and output levels are PC.

Allright. Ive found the option in nvidia Copntrol panel and it was indeed set to 15-235 and I changed it to 0-255.

Where is that in coreavc settings? Which renderer to use in mpch ?

edit: ok found it

Consider that those are a little bit (like 3-5%% brighter than in actuall movie) off. But they are still representing quite well - what I see on my screen.

Well there's your problem right there. You're expecting Pitch Black to be less dark? Cool Face
