I agree, that level is absolutely stunning, the fire/lava particles were insanely awesome looking

The gaming review media should be fucking ashamed of themselves for rating this game anything below an 8/10 IMO. This is one of the funnest and best looking games i've played in a while. To rate Crysis 2 higher then this is a fucking travesty.
Probably due to derp-i-tude I guess, because this game isn't easy and has some old-school hardcore feel to it.

Sadly there's plenty of low score reviews, most of them sound like people who hate platform games and kept hoping while playing that it transforms into something else.
Also from what I saw in the review clips, console version looks quite washed up compared to pc (unless they use retarded encoding tools which wouldn't surprise me).

Also EA has barely advertised the game (WTF EA srsly.. ) , and it's a completely unknown franchise to console players/reviewers, thus there's no hype and hype is what matters for journos.

Loving the game so far. Gameplay is pretty generic platformer and button masher, but the art direction is pretty fabulous. Worth playing just to see and hear the madness.
Crackfix from skidrow doesnt work properly here. Game now hangs from time to time for a few secs. Back to Theta crack.

I have to admit, I played it yesterday and it is not that bad. The visual style is very beautiful. But gameplay is lacking. Hack and slash and Gears of Salt. The minigames are hit and miss. It is good more than it is bad, but it is still so so for now.

In my opinion the most amazing graphical effect in this game is Alice's hair, especially the way it behaves when Alice is floating in the steam (actually I am surprised no one here mentioned it yet). And it seems to be implemented without using PhysX:

I think it clearly shows that PhysX is artificial and unnecessary - because you can have amazing physical simulation and effects with low or non-existant impact on framerates without PhysX. Perhaps, if not for NVIDIA marketing strategy toward PhysX we would have seen if not visually better, than at least not so performance consuming physical effects today.
Overall the game is very good in every regard, if one is willing to overlook several obvious and already mentioned "console aspects" (sadly a standard nowdays ) in it, such as awkward mouse controls, inconvenient shooting and lock-on camera, no ability to quick save, etc. And the MOST annoying of them atm for me is inability to block with umbrella without activating stupid lock-on mode in which you can't even rotate camera left and right.

You really needed that to reach this conclusion? Of course you can, take a look at the amazing Havok engine and all it can accomplish on the CPU.

But it's not accelerated and runs on basic CPU (Though it looks nice.), only the particles are utilizing the GPU in this build of PhysX.

No unfortunately it's impossible to just move it from one revision to another like that (UE3 itself doesn't support PhysX 3 yet even as far as I'm aware but I suppose this months UDK might have it as a new and interesting feature.), but there's probably very little to gain for the software/cpu mode as the game already uses 2.8.4(.4) and has a number of optimizations (SSE2 and the like as that link shows.) though it lacks the full rewrite and benefits of that as was done to 3.0 of course (3.0.1 being a small maintenance update.).
(I mean I run at PhysX high - though it won't work stable in later levels obviously due to the many more enemies and other effects introduced.) here and it only really slows down under the targeted 30 FPS (Higher is nice though, fps is uncapped via tweaks after all.) with those oil splashes and the peppergun effect if fired full auto while stationary (Moving disperses that cloud and drastically improves the framerate, both effects of which are tuned down heavily on the medium quality level and thus I have it enabled anyway for as long as possible in spite of this performance impact - unfortunately the oil /fluid effects and splashes as part of their fluid effects system gets disabled entirely at that medium setting but it is the single most demanding effect due to as to be a realistic fluid each splash is around 10.000 or so individual particles to calculate with multiple splashes occuring during every combat sequence.)
PhysX 3 as it says is also driverless (Alice 2 might be as well come to think of it using the nearly newest possible SDK build.) so each game would have it's own PhysXCore.dll file for it instead of a primary in the NVidia program folder.
(Though it was already partially like this.)
Though you couldn't really do that type of separation before with 2.0 either as they had every branch separated from one another thus the many driver .dll files and runtime stuff (And PhysX CUDA only working at 2.7.0 and higher, ideally 2.8.0 with the newest effects.).
(Nvidia helped out Ageia lot I think, 2.8.0 to 2.8.3 were updated constantly when new PhysX system software got released after their introduction to the software adding new features and functionality.)

How PhysX is integrated in this game.
(Apex being the highlight at the highest quality level with the fluid system and smoke effects but debris and some small additional breakable objects are also introduced and work just fine on medium but fade quickly.)
EDIT: If it weren't for NVIDIA over-doing those particle effects and hyping it up and such promotional stunts it would likely be a very popular choice and wouldn't be seen as all that demanding, would be nice if the CUDA system could offload more from the CPU actually as to further improve performance but now it's scaled back again but with other multi-core and performance enhancements in it.
(Or so I could say but they have it on mobile platforms, consoles, PC and phones already so it really rivals Havok now but both will probably be around and improved for a long time still, good with competition to drive these new features and improvements forward.)

Huh, I was mistaken it seems that indeed hair and cloth for Alice are not powered by PhysX at all..
