one would HOPE that any services effected by this can ip trace the people who are getting into others accounts and pass the information on so that they can be charged.

i mean im sure most of the people doing it are giggly immature idiots and douchebags who arent that bright, who found the passwords on sites like this, or warez forums or whatever, so they wouldnt know how to protect themselves... should be pretty easy to find and charge most of the people using this information.

and i hope they do. 'oh i was doing it for a laugh' shouldnt cut it at all.

My stance on this matter:

1. Everybody is responsible for taking care of his account and password.
2. Guys STEALING accounts (changing password and using it for himself or selling it) are fucking dicks and deserve a broken dick Smile

Omfg... answer from Blizzard...

Quote:
The password reset on Wednesday the 15th of June was done by an automated battle.net security system, which also sent you an e-mail with instructions how to complete the password reset. I can't go into detail about how this system works for security reasons.
This is unrelated to the various hacking reports you may have seen in the news recently. Blizzard's login servers were never compromised.

What the hell? So they locked accounts yesterday but there was never been something compromised huh? So why did they do it in the first place? Since it wasn't just me. All my friends's accounts got locked too. Scratch Head

Fun fact: I've never recieved such E-Mail from 15th June.

Since a lot of emails and passwords have been leaked lately they may have decided to be proactive and force password resets on players who could potentially be at risk.
They've actually sent emails or asked players to change passwords in the past when various websites were hacked and emails leaked.

Dunno if this is what happened in this specific case tho, it could be a different reason, but it would make sense if they locked accounts that could be at risk.

Facebook did the right thing too and forced everybody to use a new password. Ofc a lot of people will just settle for easy passwords again so it does not matter for the hackers Laughing

A person who has abcdef as his password will most likely change it to 123456 Laughing

All this time I thought they only stole hashed passwords which are useless. From where exactly did they get actual passwords? Got to know if I might be compromised, even though I use a unique, random password for every sensitive place.

They probably did brute force attempts, you know, let's see how many ppl have 'password' for their password... Hey look it's over 9000! xD

And so...

I've seen a name of a girl that went to school with me, and her pass is her date of birth...

well all the capital and numbers in your password isnt very relevant for anything but bruteforcing, when they just pull out the whole database at once with decrypted passwords.

Does anyone know the real back story behind that picture (the lamp-post one)? Every time I see it it makes me run through the multitude of scenarios that could have transpired for him to get there! Very Happy

Quote:
Yesterday (June 14), we learned that a hacker gained unauthorized access to the decade-old BioWare community server system associated with the Neverwinter Nights forums. We immediately took appropriate steps to protect our consumers’ data and launched an ongoing evaluation of the seriousness of the breach. We have determined that no credit card data was compromised, nor did we ever have or store sensitive data like social security numbers. However hackers may have obtained information such as user account names and passwords, email addresses, and birth dates of approximately 18,000 accounts--a very small percentage of total users. We have emailed those whose accounts may have been compromised and either disabled their accounts or reset their EA Account passwords. If you did not receive an email from us, or if your password still works for your EA account, your username and password were not compromised. Nevertheless, changing your password regularly is always helpful to protect your account.

We take the security of your information very seriously and regret any inconvenience this may have caused you. If your username, email address and/or password on the Neverwinter Nights forums are similar to those you use on other sites, we recommend changing your password at those sites as well. We advise all of our fans to always be aware of any suspicious emails or account activity and report any suspicious emails and account activity to Customer Support at 1-866-543-5435.
