Yeah, way too many people expected simple brainless shooter from DNF, and it really isn't just that. I guess that 3D Realms, after seeing Half-Life 1/2, wanted to do something more like that. With variable gameplay, including puzzles, driving and stuff. |
This. The campaign has been mostly inspired by HL1&2, you have to be blind if you can't see it.
It even has 2 Valve/HL references/jokes.

The game has done more harm than good for Gearbox's rep. Most people, even DNF "fans" that should know a few things about its development, believe it's Gearbox's game and they are responsible for it.
I'm tired of reading comments like "I hope Aliens: Colonial Marines doesn't suck as much" or "how can they go from Borderlands-quality to DNF-quality?? This makes me fear for Borderlands 2" or "They should let 3D Realms make their own game.. THAT DNF would be epic. But no, they had to buy the IP and destroy it."

Inspired perhaps, but the quality is way waaaay below HL1/2. In fact, if you've played either HL game, you'll be able to solve the DNF "puzzles" in seconds.

Have previous Steam games been cracked to allow multiplayer? How does that work?

+1 and I liked Crysis 2. Not saying the DNF is great or that it's not obviously problematic though.

Absolutely. Release it on PC for $30-40, with no stupid 2-weapon limits and the reception of it would be a lot better.

$15 is the most appropriate price for the game.
If 'Duke Nukem' hadn't been in the game's title, I would've thought this was another crappy Russian attempt at making at least an average FPS.
All the review scores spanning different platforms are completely justified.

No, they are not when they give Black Ops a 9/10, then I would expect DNF to get at least a 4/10.

The difference is Triptych is "3D Realms + 2 other people" while Gearbox was started by "2 3D Realms people + a shitload of others"
(although over the years a lot more 3DR employees moved to GBX)

I thought that the 2 weapon limit was the worst thing about this game, but I now realize that there's something much worse that nearly kills the game for me: the 10 min levels.
Had it happening ~5 times now, just when I'm really having fun with the shooting, puzzle sequences or with just the map itself -> fade to black -> 20 second loading of Map X: Part 3.
Much better than the demo so far, but IMO it pales in comparison with duke3d.

What? Nothing less? How about only two weapons at the same time, no exploring, no real challenge whatsoever, it's basically nothing like Duke 3D except for the occasional humor... |
It's a shooter with duke as the main character. The stuff they couldn't do then, they did now. I love it. It's exactly duke. If this game came out a year or so after duke3D people would be praising it. Calling it brilliant and ingenius. Now, they're disappointed. It's pathetic. I don't have a problem with only 2 guns. It plays like duke for me. At least what I remember of playing duke3D. Over the top mindless fun. Easy puzzles. Crude level design. Enemy that's challenging at times and gameplay that fits the genre of duke nukem.
Truth is, yes the game is shit compared to what is out there today right now. But, the game isn't shit when it's compared to duke nukem. I feel, in my honest opinion, that this is a worthy successor for duke.
It's fun. It's quirky. It's enjoyable. It's a shooter.
If you look pass the tedious bits the developers chose, you can actually enjoy it.
This game is duke nukem.

Duke3d's level design was anything but crude, especially for its time. Glad people enjoy it, but DNF simply isn't fun for me. Nowhere close to Duke3d in terms of gameplay enjoyment. Duke3d was cutting edge, and they even managed to overshadow Quake with their artisic use of their pixel engine. Compared to that, DNF is an abomination.

is it? yes then duke then was an achievement. memorable fun achievement. Now duke is just fun. It's a modern duke. Yes it's not groundbreaking. Yes it's not half life 3. But it's duke. Feels like duke. Plays like duke.
People who hold on to fond memories of their old classics, should just let go and enjoy what is given. Or don't even play it. Because you will be disappointed regardless of what you will be playing.

Lol. That's fair. Duke Purists will be anal. But from what I remember of duke3D now, while playing this game... is that it's similar.

It's not a modern duke at all. Back when Duke3d came out, Duke was the first real personality in gaming, voice and everything. That's why one-liner movie quotes like "hail to the king baby" where more than enough. Today? Not so much, not for 50 bucks. Times have changes, duke has not. And the gameplay is laughable.
