If only U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder had greater authority over the entertainment industry.
With three actors from the hit HBO show "The Wire" -- Wendell Pierce (Det. Bunk), Sonja Sohn (who played Det. Kima Greggs) and Jim True-Frost (who played the cop-turned-teacher Roland Pryzbylewski) -- participating in a presentation for the Justice Department's launch of the Drug-Endangered Children Task Force website on Tuesday, Holder stopped to deliver a special message to the show's creators - who were not in the audience.
"I want to speak directly to Mr. (Ed) Burns and Mr. (David) Simon," Holder said during the panel presentation. "Do another season of 'The Wire.' That's actually at a minimum. . If you don't do a season, do a movie. We've done HBO movies, this is a series that deserves a movie. I want another season or I want a movie. I have a lot of power Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon."
Unfortunately for fans of the show, it is not constitutional for Holder to order a new show.
But the series, which was lauded for its accurate portrayal of the war on drugs and poverty in inner-city Baltimore, is still a favorite around the Justice Department. National Drug Control Policy czar Gil Kerlikowske said that episodes of the show are used to educate people about the plight of children caught up in the drug trade, the Washington Examiner reported.
President Obama has also previously said that he's a fan of the show.
The actors showed clips of the show that were relevant to the presentation, including one where True-Frost's character learns that his student's clothes are being sold for drugs by his parents.
Sohn, who admitted she used to be a drug user, spoke to the panel of her own experiences.
"I was afraid to reach out because I was scared my babies would be taken away from me," she said, according to the Examiner.
The public awareness campaign is focused on protecting children from drug abuse and exploitation by emphasizing the role that different adults in the community play in assisting vulnerable children.
According to the Justice Department statistics roughly nine million children live in households where parents or other adults manufactures, uses or distributes illegal drugs.
David Simon in response: Sure, when you reconsider the prohibition of drugs!
Earlier this month, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder appeared on a panel with several actors from HBO's much-loved series about crime, politics, and civic institutions in Baltimore, The Wire.
At the end of the panel, Holder reportedly issued an edict to series creator David Simon: "I want to speak directly to Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon: Do another season of The Wire. That’s actually at a minimum.… If you don’t do a season, do a movie. We’ve done HBO movies. This is a series that deserves a movie. I want another season or I want a movie. I have a lot of power Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon.” For once, I'm with Holder.
Simon, though, has conditions he wants met before he tackles another season. Via The Atlantic, his response:
Quote:
The Attorney-General's kind remarks are noted and appreciated. I've spoken to Ed Burns and we are prepared to go to work on season six of The Wire if the Department of Justice is equally ready to reconsider and address its continuing prosecution of our misguided, destructive and dehumanising drug prohibition.
A "reconsideration" of the drug war and a sixth season of The Wire? This sounds like a too-good-to-be-true deal—which, of course, is why we can all be sure it won't actually happen.
A pity that we'll never see a 6th season. And personally I'd say that I liked the wire better than the shield. Both were great (Shield 8.5/10, The Wire 9.5/10)

The problem with The Shield was it took a long time until it decided it was going to be a drama series with action instead of an action series with drama. Perhaps the writers didn't feel comfortable yet, but it doesn't matter. The Wire was a lot more consistent in its quality over the five year span of the series.
