Swat 2 was real-time, wasn't it? JA2 is turn-based (not fully 'I shoot first, then it's your turn' tho since you can get interrupts etc.), but similar in other respects. Since your team consists of mercs that expect to get paid, you have to take care of finances and deal with possible personality clashes (or don't, sometimes the results are pretty hilarious Very Happy), as well as train militia to protect the sectors you've secured - the enemy will try and send troops to regain these areas. So it's not just one mission after another, but a complete campaign for the liberation of Arulco, and how you go about it is up to you.

Yeah. Swat 2 was like Ja2-lite. Ja2 has the same squad tactics with a godlike vantage point, but has so much more. Where you only have the tactical gameplay in swat, you also have a strategic map going on where you are constantly managing incoming funds vs. expenses and training, healing, repairing, ect. Also a Huge variety of weaponry at your disposal as opposed to several very similar options for outfitting your squad. Finally it actually has personality - all the mercs behave very differently (and sometimes very hilariously) depending on factors like morale, who they are working with, ect ect.

All in all, one of the classics. In terms of squad-based tactics - an essential.

Another set of videos.

I'm not impressed. Animations look horrible, it's not turn-based and stealth rating influences whether enemies will hear the the sound of the sniper rifle shot. :S

It's depressing to see that the browser game JAOnline looks more true to the classics with the action points system than the big RTS brother: http://www.gamestar.de/index.cfm?pid=1589&pk=19163

Uggggg,They made this "Plan and Go"

Why do these modern day idiot developers have issues with turn based?Thats part of what made JA and the XCom series great.Same kind of play mechanics as Brigade E5 and 7.62.

Movement points and action points are too tough to manage for todays crowd, ugh makes head hurty.. But they kept "some small details" like mercs personality..and who likes asnd dislikes to work with who...LIKES?? LIKES?? Dammit i remember having some arab merc and some european that didnt gey along, always tossing lines against eachother.. and i kept thinking, meh.. Then one night one of the mercs dissapeared from the camp..and leaved all the gear..and the arab goes..I told you i woul kill him someday.. Very Happy

Small details..yeah yeah.. Another day, another franchise destroyd by plain incompetents. Sad

Yes, but dont call it JA then FFS.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Turn-based is outdated technology don't you know??? They couldn't do real-time games back in the 90's, that's why games were turn-based. Now that we have awesome computers we can run everything with groundbreaking real-time technology and everything will be awesome.

The Plan & Go system could be described as an extended “real time with pauses” system. Back in Action essentially runs in real time, but the game can be paused at any time.

Laughing they want to make it sound like something "smart" when it's just a normal pause button

Release date for this steaming pile of shit is Feb. 9th in Europe through steam, not sure about the states tho (think it's the 14th there).

For anyone interested they've cut out a HUGE amount of JA2 content for reasons unknown.

Dammit, JA2 stuff made the game worth playing, especially the merc personalities and their comments. I hope they left THAT in.

Man, after looking at the video it could be MUCH worse. I don't know the old series personally, so i think it looks kinda intriguing.
