What bothered me the most is that the game is a prime example of a quick save, quick load game. You are constantly trying to get the most out of a situation so you just quick load again and try and get a better outcome. This is something you could decide for yourself but normal people will do this.
examples:
You hack something with an auto unlock tool, see nothing you want is inside, so you quick load to a save right before that hack again to get the tool back.
You were seen by guards but only get a bonus when you're not seen so you quick load and try not to be seen in your next try.
|
I'm sorry, but I don't understand this. You're complaining because there ARE quickload/quicksave functions? You can't criticise one game for having abusable functionality that is present in 99.99% of every other PC title. If you want to complain, complain about yourself - and others - for abusing this feature. QL/QS has been abused in every game that uses it, in order for the player to get an advantage.
The rest was neatly written and I agree with some of your points, it was just the QS/QL "exploit" complaint that I find very odd.
~edit~
Why remove the review? There's no point in doing that just because some people are joking >_< Luckily for me it was in my browser history, so here is the full review. It WAS a good one, so don't be put off by others.

Well, I gave this press preview a real proper playthrough!
Setup
Hooked up my computer to my 60 inch plasma tv, used an xbox 360 controller to play this game using DirectX 9 on the highest settings it allowed.
Performance
It ran perfect and was super stable. It didn't crash on my during very stressy moments and the only thing that was really annoying were the long load times. When I'm quickloading, I want it to load quickly.
Graphics & Animations
The graphics were very clean and mostly sharp, some textures could have used a higher res version. Sometimes it had a bit too much of that yellowish tint to certain scenes but I can live with that. The world is a bit too static though, feels like physics from many years ago. The animations however were hit and miss. Some animations like performing the knockouts were well done and felt satisfying but the character animations during their dialogue were really bad. They all share this same animation where the move their both arms when they speak and it looks like you're talking to a robot. Really bad.
Gameplay
I loved Deus Ex 1 and even liked Deus Ex 2. The gameplay in this game reminds me more of Deus Ex 1 and it shows because they have used most of its elements in a more modern form. Modern in its look, not in its feel. The object highlighting didn't bother me and I didn't turn it off.
What I mean by that is that during the whole game I felt like I was playing a game from 10 years ago. A lot of the choices you can make in this game are so standard and generic. The vent systems all look the same and are so unrealistic, the camera's aren't as cool as in Deus Ex 1, the hacking game isn't really fun... the way you have to pick up boxes and other heavier objects to bypass fences or unlock shortcuts are really quite "derpederp" and do not give you much satisfaction.
The guns are great and blowing someone away with a shotgun feels good. You can upgrade guns and the upgrades can be found all over the place BUT, grenades do not stack so take up a lot of space. When you pick up a gun you already own it stacks as ammo, which is not that great as you're missing out on a lot of cash when you wanted to sell them.
The augmentation system is quite underwhelming. Praxis points are earned after getting enough XP ( leveling up ) and then you can buy new augmentations but most of them were, again, very retro...

HOWEVER! The game, despite all this is FUN and enjoyable. It doesn't feel like a game should feel in 2011 but at least it's fun to slap people, hack pc's, get in vents, throw boxes, have some freedom etc...
Will buy when on sale on Steam.

Social, I hope you are not out, as you said. I'd like you to consider this:
The people residing on these boards are pretty bitter people, especially after this year's E3 - and not because they were always like this, or because they are close minded. They're like this, because the gaming industry has been shoving a lot of shit down our throats these past years, and we rightfully feel a bit ... neglected. Heck, neglected a lot!
We also identified the consoles as the main problem, or more like the console players, who are easy to market to, and don't share the same values about gaming as we do. They also tend to be younger, and thus don't know what content you could buy 10-15 years ago for 60$.
So it all adds up to this, we are irritated by anything, that threatens our already small niche, and connecting an xbox 360 controller to a PC triggers a lot of frustration, even though you are well within your right to do it, and heck, if it works for you, great! We used to be open about it, but since it's being aggressively being shoved down our throat as the input of choice even for genres originating on the PC just gets too much after a while.
Social, what you witnessed here now, was just a reflex, one that is a bit overprotective, but I just explained the reasons for it. So, according to your post, you're a smart boy, I am confident, that you will indeed understand, and not take offence.

what did i just miss? Theres drama on the hump'?
Ill try to explain this way:
1-Most of us are from the cynic generation u know, the one before the derp generation.
2-Most of us consider DX1 like one of the best games of all time.
3-Most of us disliked (for n reasons) DX2.
4-Most of us agreed that DX:HR captured what was only a faint hope: a good portion of the essence of DX1.
5-You didnt. Fine with that. played with a xbox 360 controller, well, ok.
6-I dont think the hacking game is dull, for one, and i didnt use the shotguns rambo approach either.
7-Thank you for your oppinion, just remember when you give it, you norm get other oppinions in return.

Yeah, I definitely didn't agree with the "hacking being dull" comment. I absolutely adored the hacking minigame in DXHR, it was far more interactive and rewarding than just holding CTRL and pressing H, then watching a bar count down.. forcing you to read the emails fast or be locked out.

I think that was the best hacking minigame in any recent RPG actually, very well done. Worst was ME2 though, dull as shit.

I think people who say it's dull have just done the early hacks which are really easy, but I'm sure they will get increasingly harder as the game progresses.

Finally finished the game (what's available so far I mean). I'd like to think that I did every side quest (six of them, right??) and found all the secrets but I'm positive there are more secret areas/stashes than I found. Loved every minute of it.
How I handled Barrett Spoiler: | I tried using the fucking EMP grenades and missed with both that I had. Kept bouncing them off boxes and shit. So I dropped two of those explosives where I was hiding and lured him that way. Then blew them up (almost killing myself in the process) which damaged and stunned him. Unbeknownst to me there was a green-gas canister there as well which blew and damaged him further (and took me down to something like 2 health). I was able to run across the room and hide behind a column. Used some goodies I had to heal a little and then threw another explosive toward him and set it off. The third one did him in. |
I wonder if we'll be able to use our save games to continue on with retail or if they'll make some changes so we won't be able to. No matter, totally worth playing through the first part again

Spoiler: | At first he beat the living shit out of me, until I figured a very easy way to beat him.
I think I threw 2 or 3 frag grenades on his face then just took cover and sprayed him with the Combat Rifle which didn't even take 1 clip to kill him after. was extremely quick. |

I had a rocket launcher with me - even though i haven't killed anyone during my playthrough - i shot one at him right away, then hid behind some cover and HE FUCKING LOST ME. Couldn't find me - kept spraying randomly and throwing his nades all over the place, walked into a corner and blew himself up with the explosive barrel. Used my second rocket to finish him off.

I thought about taking the Rocket launcher with me just in case but the damn thing takes a shitload of space!!

sometimes I knock enemies unconscious and then finish them off with my silencer just like that. I haven't seen anyone wake up but still I'd like to make SURE my enemy's gone, Maybe it'll have a different impact in the full game about your reputation.

There is a stungun. But i relied mostly on takedowns - it's kinda dumb that they require energy though. And there is no way of telling which one will occur. There is a stranglehold one that is long and throws the body forward with stupid posing afterwards and then there is a much faster one with several punches.
