Wow, what a disappointment. I can't believe the derpness in this one. I didn't like a single thing in this demo, from graphics to UI, from game play to loot. Seriously, it reminds me of the simpler PSP games...

I'm only going to play this for the "obsidian" story... maybe there are traces of Black Isle greatness in there.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

I think you can use the W and D keys instead of the RMB. Can't check now, since I deleted it already. But speaking about controls, wtf is with picking up the loot with the E key? I mean, you press the E once to open the chest and the loot falls around you...now you need to move around awkwardly to pick it up, sometimes going around it a little to make it register...morons. Plus, the character screen/inventory is retarded.

W and S also move forward, but that feels even more awkward than right-mouse. Either make it proper WSAD controls, or stick to point-click-move as DS was meant to be. This might be "fun" as a loot-whore game for a couple of hours, but it stinks to high heaven of consoles -- the UI is cramped and counter-intuitive, the controls are pathetic, the game looks like a cartoon and the looting is clunky. Christ, saying it reminds you of PSP games (and also PS2, such as DA/DA2) is an INSULT to the PSP and PS2.
Chris Taylor... what happened to you?

You can use WASD as well, i think the combination actually works reasonably well.
Game looks fine as well, runs very good, the menu system is stupid though, a couple of the annoyances i've encountered sofar:
1. You can't use keyboard for controlling the menu, it's obviously nice that we can use the mouse, but a lot of the time you'll be using the keyboard for convenience.
2. the Dialogue system requires you that you press on the text instead of the just pointing in the direction you want, it's not a big deal, but would be preferred if you could just click on any point of the screen and have it rely on the mouse position.
3. Menu system is animated and takes up some unnessecary time to show itself.
4. Item comparison is weak, only compares the direct stat changes and not the actual changes (How much damage i gain/lose, etc.)
5. Inventory management ultimately gets destroyed by the lack of keyboard control or multiselect(If there is multiselect i haven't found it atleast, tried shift and clicking on the orb), this make actions like transmutation pretty annoying as you have to click the item, click the transmute button and click the confirm button.
Mostly GUI is holding me back on this game, it's kind of like Borderlands which on its own was pretty good, but got destroyed by the poor PC GUI and absolutely horrible matchmaking system.
Any word on the multiplayer matchmaking? It obviously isn't Steamworks, hopeully it's not gamespy or GFWL

Yeah i don't get that, why WOULDN'T you want to pick up loot? For gods sake you got like 100 inventory slots, you can probably even expand that, and if it had proper multi selection managing your inventory wouldn't even be an issue.

WSAD doesn't work as it does in other games, it's massively counter-intuitive. Either have proper WSAD control (move forward, back, left, right) or have mouse pointing for moving. As it stands, having forward/back and camera pan on WSAD is goddamn hideous. I've never seen a game, especially a hack'n'slash, use such a retarded control scheme. What idiot sat down and actually said "Yes, this works! Let's go with this!"
WSAD = move, Mouse = camera.
PERIOD!

The UI and controls are absolutely terrible. Why the hell couldn't they have tweaked the PC version to allow mouse activation on pickups.
The other big issue is the whole rmb movement and lmb attack. Dunno why they didn't just make it like Diablo 2 and other H&S where I can just hold down lmb for movement and attack and use other keys for specials.
Damn controllers...

I meant to say that you can't pick up with the mouse (or I missed it?) so you either have to use the E key or walk into it and it doesn't work well all the time. As for you saying it runs well...what did you expect with the game graphics on the PS1 levels. Seriously, I think Torchlight had better textures. But they do have like 7 levels of shadows : off, low, medium, high, very high, extreme, insane

... and people wonder why there's so much trash prevalent these days? I can't believe there are people actually DEFENDING this turd - yet Space Siege, which was infinitely better, got panned to hell and back. No doubt activating gamepad support makes it feel and play "properly" since it's painfully obvious that was the intention.
Oh well. I, for one, refuse to bow to our Derp Overlords. Bleh, current gaming is a travesty. I'll stick to the classics, thanks.

Space Siege was a piece of shit if you compare it to other games in the genre. Daggerdale is even worse. You just need to wake up from your dreamy illusion
As for DS3 - I don't expect much from it, but I'll check out the demo and see for myself. AP was mediocre at best, and I've got a feeling Obsidian as we know them are dead. We'll see. |
AP was a good game in my opinion. Rough and unpolished sure, but well written and with plenty of C&C.
DS3 gives me a very bad first impression with the controls and UI. Ultimately it is Square Enix who are responsible for much of the design in DS3 though (just look at the whole weeaboo-esque art style).

No it's a bastardisation, for the dumb cunt console pricks, of the old GasPoweredGames "Dungeon Siege" titles -- and it's appalling. By the way, I was right about the controls; hooking up a 360 pad fixed them immediately. Now it plays exactly like the console turd SHOULD play; left stick move (oh look!) and right stick camera (oh look again!) with the face buttons assigned to attacking, etc. By the way; it has to be a 360 controller (or a PS3 with emulated 360 profile via MotionInJoy) Doesn't work with any other.
It's still a travesty compared to DS1 and DS2.

Way ahead of you, my man, DS2 installing as we speak.

I can enjoy most any game which is pretty evident, I'd take Dungeon Siege 1 over this of course or even DS2 but now they've done this instead.
If one would want to point out flaws or more detailed criticism the overall game lacks polish and feels rough and unfinished, visuals are crude with low res textures and very low detail polygon characters alongside higher detail ones, maps are fully linear with little to no open areas (Other than a chest or such hidden away.) and the entire game is streamlined heavily down to like nine (Can't see all of them.) basic abilities and then nine similar basic skills with attributes reduced to basics and items the only way to increase or change these from the looks of the demo, item loot also highly streamlined with few visual differences between weapons (And none amongst armor so far.) and the whole heatlh and mana orb system feels odd.
Story seems overly epic but doesn't feel as such with the narrator more like a b-action movie and vague plot in general (Few side quests as well and those that exist are fully straightforward so far.)
As the hints say the game is also fully geared towards co-op and can punish the player for not having company by all sorts of unbalanced odds and equipment you will never have a use of (Male noble hero type can't use helmets or spears for example.)
Cutscenes are also a bit rough zooming all the way down to first person perspective and focuses slightly on the head and chest area (Females especially.) with a few small choices during conversation though little of importance.
Game isn't fully seamless either so you can't wander through the entire continent should you so wish as per the above about limited exploration.
Interface and controls were already mentioned by others and there's little to add to this.
Yet I still like the game for what it does, heh.

The story will probably be well written, as is typical in Obsidian games. However, it's a waste to be in such a derped game. I would like to see what Obsidian wrote but if the game is too frustrating to play, then I will skip it.

You know me JB, I generally like all sorts of "crap" (as people put it) such as the PS2 versions of Baldur's Gate, Bard's Tale and Fallout ... but this is Dungeon Siege. Dungeon Siege was *already* a mindless hack'n'slash, so how is it possible to make it even MORE mindless? I guess I know the answer now. You know, it probably wouldn't have been so bad if the developers had actually bothered, for just one second, to think about the differences between PC<>Console. Instead we get a 99.99% identical port, right down to the shitty controls that can only be fixed by playing with a gamepad, the horridly clunky and chunky UI....and the lacklustre visuals.
It's just goddamned insulting.

Oh the game could have done far better indeed Sabin, unfortunately as you mention it is nearly a direct port minus some basic additions.
I don't really know how Obsidian is structured but they seem pretty "unreliable" at times, some games having a lot of promise and potential but often stumbling when actually released.
(Technical issues, testing, game specific bugs and now this game with it's own share of problems.)
EDIT: Movement is similar (Back, Forward, Rotate Left, Rotate Right.) which is likely why I picked up on it well, mouse was just weird in comparison and there's no way to customize the game further that I can see or I'd have fine tuned a lot of stuff or tried.
(And the camera is - which is some achievement - even worse than the initial options for Sacred 2 )

It kind of reminds me of the really clunky movement in NWN2 if you used movement keys. I always used Isometric + mouse though so it didn't bother me in that.

I can't remember a single Obsidian game with polish and good ergonomics. Their strong points had to be enjoyed in spite of everything else that seemed to just go in your way.
Never understood why they would ever work on a game that requires you to do well exactly the things they suck at.
