You can shoot the laser emitters with no consequence (they don't trigger an alarm or anything).

Or, you just hack the panel on the wall and turn them off Smile

Now, people will hate me for this, but I never understood, why DX1 is considered the best game of all time ... etc, etc. I didn't like it as much. Right now, I'm pretty sure I like DX3 more.

this
i just started playing dx1 again after going through half of the preview build and yea, my feeling is still the same as a few years ago when i tried it
it's horribly overrated
the world is just empty and soulless and the combat AI is ridiculous
it's the multiple entry level design and branching social interactions that shine here
the game IS the amazing messiah-game it's hailed as, for when it came out
there was nothing like it back then and made a big impact on games to come
it is a classic for a reason and one of the most important games ever
but it has aged
i still love it and will surely enjoy immensely playing it through once again, but i'd still rate vampire bloodlines over it within it's genre
though bloodlines was a less important and less interesting game in the genre, i still think it's a better game overall
and now of course dx3 takes #1 spot based on the preview

i think it's a thing of impact against the status quo.
like lots of people love thief 1, which essentially invented the genre, over thief 2 which had much more honed gameplay and level design
it's not viewed on it's own merits, but rather how much it improved upon the new status quo of it's genre

Thats the problem, most of you played it recently or just a few years back. Not on release date.

You compare the game with games now and not with back then.

Wow, the rocket launcher is a little useless when playing stealthily Smile I'd take it to sell but it takes up a LOT of room in the inventory (as it should!) But I made a save and tried it out anyway. Fired it at two guys standing by a barrel. Killed one but only stunned the other??? And then about 10 guys showed up to investigate. Not sure where they came from though as I had cleared that whole area except for those two guys and two others near them. And they weren't dressed like the new guys Smile

I sold my rocket launcher, although it was stated, that it made the last fight easier - I didn't care, my Jensen needs no rocket launcher, all he needs is his uber pimped pistol of assured death!

So true !

I had the same feeling with System Shock 2, which I finished for the first time last year since having it on day 1 (yeah I know, don't shoot me Smile ) and I didn't understand what all the fuss is/was about.

You have to see everything in it's time frame and for that Deus Ex is my best game ever. And I truely mean that, but someone who played it just recently will never see and understand it in the way I see it. Nostalgia FTW Smile

Really? I played Deus Ex recently and I think it's one of the best games ever. It's not the best for me since I prefer medieval/fantasy games in general, especially RPGs and the best game ever for me still is Gothic II, followed by the other Gothic games, followed by the first The Witcher.

Yeah, I don't agree with that line of thought. There were several classics I didn't get to play until like 5-10 years after their release, but I could easily see why they had become classics and were considered such great games. Whether or not Deus Ex 3 can compare to Deus Ex remains to be seen; it's not unusual for the first part(s) of a game to be more fleshed out and have more work put into it than the latter parts. It looks promising, but it's too early to tell.

I played the demos of SS2 and DE1 back in the day.. but I didn't play the full games until yeeeeears later.

And I thought they were amazing games, I didn't think of them as horribly dated, or flawed, or bland, whatever..

DE1 is my #2 favorite title right after HL1, and SS2 might be my 3rd favorite actually, but I can't say, because honestly I can't rank my favorite games, they are all good Smile

The only thing counting against SS2, whilst being in DX1's favour, is the expansive exploration. SS2 was huge, but it was set on a very cramped space craft - and it showed. DX1 at least gave the semblance of an expansive world with nooks and crannies to explore.

HOWEVER! There is one thing DX1 absolutely wins on against DX3; soundtrack. The soundtrack in DX3 is functional and it fits the mood, but nothing really stands out except for the radio station ... and that's because it uses DX1 music.

Yeah, I'm worried I'm going to be underpowered when it comes time for this last fight I keep reading about. I've played the non-lethal route the whole game so far without killing a single person. I've knocked a shitload out though Smile Only lethal weapon I'm carrying is the silenced sniper rifle and, honestly, I'm not sure why. I've never used it to shoot anyone. Hell, only time I've used it was to shoot the mines through the door vent and blow the door off. Smile Guess I'll see how it goes when I get to that point Smile

Aw man, finished it.

As for the end boss, I took him down on deus ex difficulty easily...after like 10 tries Cool Face

Stun gun+ 3 remote bombs + stun gun again + 25 rounds from rifle straight to the face ( had to go back for it, good thing items don't disappear )

First and only kill Smile

I absolutely LOVED the exploration, and did not finish a mission or level without finding most if not all routes and secrets.

Btw, how do you use the burst add-on on the shotgun? Not the one you start with but the ones you buy/find. I installed a burst fire add-on but I can't find a way to fire faster than without it. Anyone know?
