Ultima VII had a great atmospher...and of course Witcher 1.

Over that, many of the games that are already mentioned. Vietcong 1 and Jericho are two very underated games, both with great atmospher eventhough some stuff in the gameplay are lacking.

Stalker CoP
That game is just amazing with a pair good headphones.

Stalker SoC was less immersive overall but the underground labs where totally awesome.

These 2 games I will never forget, it was like I was there, the sound of every footstep, screams in the distance. If people ask me if I am happy with my life, I say yes and show them printed out screenshots of this game in my wallet.

Also Ultima IX Ascension was a great atmospheric game.

I see a lot of you mention stalker, I too like that game a lot, especially at night, but there are some balancing issues with it, namely: you get too strong in it, and being able to put down monsters fast makes it less scary.

Also, I think the Stalker games were loads more scary than the dead space games.

Many of the games I can think of the top of my head, have already been mentioned. +1 also for Thief's cradle level!.

I really liked the music and the voices in freespace 2 space sim. They really helped to elevate the atmosphere when you were fighting the losing battle against the Shivans..who incidentally remain silent throughout the whole game to good effect, that you are facing an unrelenting and omnious enemy.

The first cod games and MoH took fps immersion to another level at the time. Again I think this was down mainly to the excellent sound and music which everyone takes for granted nowadays in the cinematic style fps's.

Original Tomb Raider, has that been mentioned?. Beyond Good and Evil was also pretty cute.
An honoury mention for Modern Warfare too.

Lots more games which I can't think off but I think the way to totally ruin a atmosphere in games, is when it is all looking good so far, controls feel right, graphics look nice, then someone opens their mouth and some really cliche/cheesy dialogue is spoken with some bad/inappropriate voice acting. That really kills it.

Yes yes, I think that's an underrated game too. But it was hyped up to be something it didn't really fullfill. Also it was horrible out of the box, very few computers at that time had the power to play it without it being a slideshow. The all over feeling was good though. Miss the Ultima serie..Sad

Metro 2033
or STALKER SoC

heck, even Call of Cthulhu has good story but it's vastly inferior when it comes the visuals, gameplay, etc, its less immersive than the above ones.

Yeah, imagine a new proper Ultima game with an engine like Witcher 2 Shocked

That would be awesome. But at the same time I do not really want a resurrection of the serie because I know it will not be what an Ultima game is supposed to be like. I mean, no one makes games like that anymore.

Fuck yes, now gimme that back please Sad

As for other games, many of the good old RPG's for example. The real Fallout games for example, lightyears better than FO3/NV. Baldur's Gate, Diablo did it quite well too.

And then there's the little kid in me that can't help but think of LBA again (both of them) Smile

Now that I decided to play it (didn't have the hardware back then), I have to add Metro 2033 as well. Holy shit that game has moments. Stalker still has the edge for simply having an open world and better feel to it, but damn it's close.

Hell there's a lot of old games I used to play as a kid which just sucked me in. I forgot about time and place while playing those for hours. How about Zelda, Bruce Lee (on cbm64) and Pirates just to mention a few. Of more recent games there's Doom, Bioshock and Operation Flashpoint (ya rly). Op Flashpoint had some awesome missions where you had to escape from enemy territory with the help of navigating from stars. There's tons of other games I've forgotten about and others already mentioned.

I remember that mission i Flashpoint. One of the best missions ever! I just loved how you really felt left out and alone knowing patrols and choppers were searching high and low for you. I remember just the thought about getting caught by the enemy troops was scary, like it would had been if the situation was real.

I'd like to see modern casual (console) gamers play that mission Razz

Anachronox has a good story, but majority of the people haven't played it. I suggest you try it out if you are into RPGs.
