AnimalMother the point of the level cap is to get everyone on a level playing field for PvP. After that you can still learn better skills which you can use in PvP. It's not a game in the same way as WoW where the guy with the rarer item or whatever will win - it's a skill game. Think of it more as something like UT2004. There's nothing to earn there so why do you play? Probably to enjoy yourself and improve your skills at the same time.

I suppose it's not a MMORPG in a traditional way. If you want a game where you can watch your character grow etc then GW isn't for you. Even if you're just starting the game you can create a PvP only char that is level 20 instantly but you won't have many skills to use. If you're looking for a sense of progression then maybe join a guild and improve their status. Actually I'd recommend joining a guild because it makes the game 10x more enjoyable.

PvE is still pretty good in itself though. It's nice to just explore - something I never really felt with WoW.

Alot of people play UT2004 to improve their stats, or to win the game in hand, sort a a level to complete if you will.

I suppose if you can improve a guilds status then thats the same thing. Are there areas to control?

No but there's a guild ranking thing. I'm not too sure about all that stuff since I've only just tried the PvP stuff tonight and that was just an attempt to get a guild hall.

I am a little confused, upon creating my first character should I choose RP or Pvp. I tried PvP but got my ass kicked all the time and there wasn't much for me to do. Then I created a new dude and RP and there was towns and stuff. Seemed much better but I still wanna kill dudes when I can. So what are you guys playing and why? Mind you I only tried about 20 minutes last night so maybe I just haven't found stuff I am supposed too.

What is the point in killing people if you get nothing out of it apart from knowing you pissed someone off? Which seems to be what you're against (i.e. ganking). You realise that if people group they will still hunt for lone players to 'gank'.

The we have this shit about paper, scissors, stone mechanic. Ok so what people are going to do it specifically hunt for a player who is weakest against them. When they see someone who can counter them they'll run. What fun is that?

Even something like honour for killing another player, which you can save to get cool privileges and you get more honour for killing someone you're weak against, or someone with more honour then you. It would add a point to PvP. IS there something like that? What is the aim of PvP?

Progression != Leveling

Progression can be determined in alot of ways, one of which is your own player skill. Which is half the reason people play FPS's where it's the same thing every round (e.g. CS, HL2, UT, ect).

The PvP is very structured, It's not just you running around some god-forsaken PvP 'area' waiting to find someone that you can accaulty beat. There are a number of options, you can play in the Gladiator Arena (get randomly matched with 3 other people, against another team), theres the Tombs of the Prime Evil Kings, (player chosen teams of 8, which starts of with 8v8, and progresses into 8 teams fighting each other) where you get some reward for winning, something guild related, I haven't accaulty bothered to try and win yet, just been playing casually.

There is fame, which you gain from PvP battles (and GvG's?) but I haven't bothered to check what it amounts to yet.

There are also some new options they've added but I haven't explored them yet (i haven't reached them since it got released). Then there's GvG where it gets really serious, which I haven't got to yet, so a more experienced GW player could comment on that.

Oh yeah, you can't specifically hunt for someone weaker than you, except in the most general terms. Elementalists are weaker (armor wise) than most other classes, so they become a common target for warriors, but you have no idea what build they are using, what skills they have, so it can turn out to be a horrible mistake to charge that person (because he/she would have predicted this and taken some really harsh spells against warriors).

This is what I was looking for Smile! I'm not sure how I would deal with this game, it doesnt sound much like a MMORPG, more like a MMOPVPB (player vs player battle Wink - Copywritten [sYn]).. I guess it is going to fill the gap for those people who dont like the WoW style of MM game, which is a wonderful thing. I get bored of PVP very quickly, I like having quests, new area's with new NPC's etc.. guess thats what I love about WoW..

Might still pick this up though, seen as there is no monthly fee Smile!

Sorry, thats just how I type anyway. Whether I curse or not has nothing to do with it. But I suppose it's a strain for people like you.

My uber mini review: Great game, but no replacement for a "real" mmorpg. But rather, a nice addition when bored of playing your current one for the day.

Well, if you enjoyed Diablo 2 and games like Dungeon Siege, you'll definetly appreciate this. This game is quite a bit like Dungeon Siege. PvE wise, I mean.

why bother? 98% of the times you wont think like the reviewers anyway, so why let them decide for you?

I've been extremely happy with my retail copy. The PvE experience is loads deeper than I though, and we all already know that the PvP is the best around. Plus, no major server fuck ups yet. Even during peak time a day after release (usually the WORST DAY), the worst it got was laggy. No 4-12 hour downtimes like WoW seems to have every few days. All this, and no monthly fee? This game should seriously been seen as the new standard of expectations for MMORPG's.

Yeah I thought Blizzards handling of the initial release of WoW in europe was pathetic. Lots of lag and downtime, and considering they already knew what to expect because of the previous US release this was totally unacceptable in my opinion. I still really like blizzard as a developer though.

I was about to get Guild Wars today, but by the time I got my ass to the shop it had closed. Crying or Very sad

Not as bad as SOE. Taking the server down for maintainence for 8 hours on the American clock on the day of the European release was a complete and utter disgrace.

I would have thought about doing that if it was cheaper, but it's the same price as it is in the store. I'd rather have the physical box and manual if i'm paying the same price.

Blizzies servers are total shit, they have been running them like crap ever since USA launch, , and since a few weeks ago they still run like shit. I expect unscheduled maintence for at least 8 hours each and every patch. I havnt played over the past two weeks because my accounts been canceled since then, but from launch till then its been horrible.
