Well, the game is fucking brilliant, but the below average combat pulls it back. I just can't get immersed, with such clumsy combat. Is it GOTY?- RPG of the year probably, unless PB pulls a G2 on our asses with Risen 2 (which I find possible); but it's not GOTY for me thus far, P2 still holds the honors.
Everything is great with the game: plot, dialogue, characters, world, atmosphere - everything is really good, except for the combat system, I'm just amazed why they wen with this shit. Button spam and rolling - quen also breaks the game on hard, I regret leveling it ...

ok I'm still in the prologue and I am in the city now and protected some people from getting killed. Now they put a wagon in my way and there are two doors that are locked. How should I continue?

Spoiler: | Go back to the road where some lot soldiers are holding a group of civilians. Pretty much the way you came from when you left Foltest. |

Agreed. The combat is just a sore thumb, this would of been the absolute perfect game if they had done a better job with that. But even so, it's not something that ruins it for me, all the others things are really quite well done.

Well, I don't agree.
Combat is absolutely great for me. It has quite simple mechanics (3 buttons primarly - block + 2 attacks). But it has depth and it's quite tactical. Trying to defeat opponents by simply mashing a button or two won't cut it here.
Personally, I found it to be a blast while fighting multiple opponents, as there are SO MANY choices in how to defeat them. I usually draw away from group the less armored ones, as they have increased mobility and move faster, leaving shielded ones a bit behind, leaving me time to take them easier and alone.
So everyone that has been spoon fed and deep implanted with moronic Assassin't Creed combat genre so far (one button= kill all + enemies waiting in line to kill... sry be killed by you), needs to reset it's views and at least stop saying that this combat sucks.

freeb0y : i7 at 3.4ghz I guess you have an i7-2600 or i7-2600K. You know that if you have the K version and left it at 3.4ghz you paid for nothing? Overclock that shit to at least 4.4ghz right fucking now! That's how the CPU was meant to be!

Great ending though, waiting for expansion or Witcher 3 |
How long did it take you all n all? |
Hmm, about 30 hours I would estimate. I would guess I did about half the subquests, so there's more out there to be done.
This is about how the game is split up
Prologue - 5%
Act I - 35%
Act II - 40%
Act III - 15%
Epilogue - 5%
I'm going to give this a second playthrough though, because there were SO many occasions where I am certain my choices changed the story. For those of you who wonder how I played through (major spoilers below):
Spoiler: |
Prologue: v0v, don't think any choices here affect the endgame
Act I: Killed the governor, sided against Iorveth and swore to find the Kingslayer along with the special forces guy. Romanced Triss, stayed loyal.
Act II: Shagged Ves, started out by being friendly to the king (but later on decided to betray him, allowing the special forces guy (Loche or whatever his name is) to kill him).
Act III: Picked to rescue Triss (to stay loyal to her), ignored "Loch", let the dragon survive
Epilogue: killed the Kingslayer
|
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

+1 Great combat, takes time to master, but makes for a much more realistic and better game.

I'm trying to find a nice 1080p (or higher) screenshot with no UI, no Gerald's back in the middle of the screen and a nice view to put as my desktop background wallpaper. Can only find old screens from E3.

Ok, so I overclocked my Q6600 to 3.2Ghz. I've got 6GB of RAM and a nVidia GTX 260. Installed the most recent nV Beta drivers and made sure to clean my system of all 3D Vision drivers.
If I run the game @ 2560x1440 + Medium, I'm only averaging about 15fps. If I switch to 1920x1080 (which sucks) I can hit about 30fps max which is still pretty low. It's manageable but far from liquid smooth. I've heard the game is quite CPU bound, so is upgrading my video card worthless?
~60fps = Must buy 2600K?

Playing on Hard and finding combat system simply brilliant. To those that can't grasp it: first, learn how to dodge properly. Good dodging/flanking is a must on Hard. Playing with mouse+kb is a bit easier too, imho, than with gamepad. Quicker selection of signs, better responsiveness, quicker camera rotation/target selection.

My problem with the combat is, it leaves you no choice. You either play it the way CDPR wants you to (dodge like crazy), or you completely fail at it. Now, don't misunderstand me, I play on hard, and since the first moment, I mastered dodge, up to the point, where now in act 3, I waste anything without losing even a bit of health, by basically doing one single fucking manouver: dodge.
Very bad combat design. They should have taken a note from the guys at PB for good action-RPG combat.
