Im having a discussion with a friend here, he claims that MS bought the MSN messenger service from hotmail, claming there was a thing before Windows Messenger that was purely from hotmail.
I know MS bought Hotmail in 1997, but i cannot recall them having their own messenger service that MS bought aswell.
Anyone can shed some light on this?
The thing i do know in the timeline is:
Windows messenger -> MSN messenger -> Windows Live Messenger

As for his statement: no. Hotmail launched in '96, bought by MS less than a year later. Messenger didn't come around until '99.
And your order is wrong. It's MSN Messenger in '99, then Windows Messenger in '01 with Windows XP as a highly fucked up version of MSN Messenger and slowly being backported into MSN Messenger, ultimately becoming the aweful Windows Live Messenger with Vista (around that time anyway, I stopped using it long before then).

Well for the wrong order i blame 11 years of smoking weed

There were other systems before then though, I'm pretty sure ICQ and AIM were around already
