Just a quick explanation on what brand value means:

"People are willing to pay more for a brand than a product. Brand value is the extra money a company can make from its products solely because of its brand name. As an example, how much more is a consumer willing to pay for a coffee at Starbucks as opposed to a coffee at a fast-food restaurant?"

I wouldnt pick the iPhone, my contract was renewed last year and they tried to sell me one, whent hey couldn't provide the phone I wanted, I told them where to stick it and bought the phone privately and avoided a contract renewal.

I have not used the iPhone4, I used one a few years ago briefly (Iphone 2 or 3 I guess, dunno) and was unimpressed, I honestly just dont understand the whole Apple thing.

I think Apple is good but their only "real" success is with the iphone, and iphone 4 in particular, because it was a huge step forward in high quality smart phones.

Apple products are easy to use and not as complex as other devices, this appeales the a large amount of the populus for they are often technologically inept in many ways. Although in our current age we as a species have become more technologically aware than many years ago, they majority of the populus is still lacking understanding and knowledge. Apple products compensate for this lack of "ability" by oversimplifying, which in many cases seem to work.

What worries and angers me is not so much that a product simplifies and is applauded for it, it is that people are very willing to pay MORE for LESS. It has come to a point where people are willing to pay double the price to just "carry" the brand and lack of overall functionality. Many shortcomings of Apple products nowadays are often simply defended by the words "simplicity" and "effectivity" whilst these are not appropiate.

TL:DR
Shitty brand for stupid people; If you are stupid you will love it and if you even have the slightest technological insight you will be appalled by its "brand-power" and its "lacking".

yep, that's correct. :\ It's why I don't get a macbook, unless the price actually suits what you get.

Well, since iPod/iPhone - Apple products have become pretty good. Unfortunately, their prices are ridiculous - so I'm not going to support them until that changes.

I like to stay pragmatic.

However, I do like my gadgets once in a while - and when I feel moronic enough to splash big money on a cute superfluous gadget like a Smartphone, I'm going to have to go with the Samsung Galaxy S2 - as it represents significantly better value for money than an iPhone.

But, to each his own.

I got that ZTE Blade for 100€ when I got a new phone subscription with unlimited Internet access for 2€/month (!!). It's good for surfing but otherwise you can see why it's so cheap. Will buy something else when this explodes, but definitely not Nokia. Android seems nice.

Concerning topic, I do not understand any Apple product, vastly overpriced. And iPad is a god damn joke. iPhone is just an "Obama-phone". It is a good device though, but not as a phone.

roblem with Apple is, they rely on cult branding. Through commercials they associate a lot of values with being an apple user, that are frankly absurd: you are cooler, you are more open minded, you are hip, you can afford the best, you have good taste ... etc. Those are all what apple users believe about themselves. Every time I get in an argument about Apple with a fanboy, it ends up with them defending it with: but look at how cool it looks, or some such.

Also, there's peer pressure, especially for teenagers, where "belonging" is paramount. I read a study claiming 57% of high schoolers in the US would like an iPhone, and the main reason was made out to be, that all the "dominant" kids had those.

And this is technology we're speaking of. Apple is everything technology shouldn't be about: only style, limited functions, limited environment for developers, total control by Apple, gathering your data without consent...

Also, I won an iPad in a Photoshop contest here in my home city late last year - sold it for good cash, didn't even unwrap it, but I bought many good stuff for it at good price and good functionality. Fuck Apple.

Apple is expensive, too expensive, but some of their products can be nice.

I made myself a present in buying a 11" MacBook Air which I need on a daily basis at work, its very slim and feels sturdy, fast enough for word/internet/movies (on projector), it does 5h battery and 30days sleepmode. Also OSX is much less of a hassle when you just need to do word/powerpoint, internet, presentations on the road.

For the Rest I have a self built PC, which, of course was much cheaper and than the macbook. I would never buy an iMac or MacPro or any stationary Apple machine because that would make no sense for me. With the MacPro, you pay for Workstation/Server Hardware that could be more reliable but performs exactly the same as Desktop Hardware and a machine thats beautiful UNDER YOUR DESK. The iMac is the same in an opposite way, you pay for Notebook Hardware in a, comparatively nice and shiny screen but you are very limited in upgrades.

Two of my friends have been using low end iMacs and other macs for years and they seem to be fine with them. Its a matter of choice.

I also own a jailbroken iPhone 3GS, which I got as a present (and I didnt ask for it). Its the first smart phone I ever owned and it does Email checking, Internet browsing and time killing with small games nicely and without hassles. I only really hate the battery life. Also I couldnt care less if it was any other brand. As long as it doest what it should do in a proper way, I'm good.

Streamlining is not a bad thing per se. It all depends on what you actually want to do with a certain device. In this case, the device is in between you and your information, so it should be as hassle free and intuitive as possible. I like complex video games because I see them as a challenge, where the complexity is part of my gaming experience as a whole. Computers and OSes are, for most people, only an intermediate to some other end. And it's fully understandable that they may want this to be as simple and intuitive as possible.

As I see it, only Apple has been pioneering and able to really deliver on that market. "EDIT: contradiction was here". Even though they are control-freaks and their marketing, relying on fanboyism, really makes me sick sometimes.

Before I had my own business, I worked for a few months on Snow Leopard at a work place, and found it lacking. For me, the tinkering about comes with the OS, and I like Windows 7 for that. Win7 can be as easy to handle for a beginner, maybe not quite as easy as MacOS, but within an inch. But when you want to configure your OS, then Windows wins no contest

Also, on same hardware, Win 7 machines are more effective, even when it comes to programs considered Apple darlings, like CS5 programs. Technically, Win7 is superior, just not as shiny and not as hyped up.

There is no circumstance for me, where MacOS would be better than Win7.

Now, I'm not trying to say Windows is a one size fits all, that's not true, and competition is always good for the market, but competition should not be based on style over substance (the only battle Apple can win).

Most analysts predict Apple's market share to decrease significantly in the smartphone market in the next 3-5 years: with good reason, once the novelty wears off, people will go for affordability and functionality, they'll drop to around 10% like they are on the PC market (basically the snobs)

The only good thing to come out of the third party Apple companies, is the display. The one from the iPhone 4. But then again, I had the pleasure of buttoning up a Samsung Galaxy S2, MUCHO ME GUSTA, there is literally no difference in sensitivity and accuracy.

Where did you see S2? Surprised I wanted to buy it, but it wasn't out yet so I went for S. And it does have a kickass touchscreen.

Up until recently I was doing freelancing for a phone service, and the boss brought a preview version or smth(it's not out yet in RO, as far as I know, but this version was pretty much what to expect from the upcoming vanilla phone, the CPU was clocked at 1.2, etc.). And the Galaxy S isn't that bad either, I'm actually looking for a good offer to get it with a subscription, it's way too expensive SIM free.
