Wasnt quite sure where to post this but, I have just bought a new AMD Phenom Tri Core CPU and a mobo with the view to unlocking it via ACC. Which I am very happy to say went exactly to plan, as it Unlocked the 4th core and the L3 Cache Just fine when i booted it up it's says I now have a Phenom 2 X4 B50.

What i'm wondering is if anybody has had any experience with this before?

because obviously the core was locked and the CPU was binned as such for a reason e.g the core was faulty or wasnt performing as well so was locked.

I'm wondering what the risks of this are, and can it damage my CPU in the long run?

I should keep it at stock speeds as I'm not big on overclocking, and quite frankly have had little or no gains from it apart from an influx of blue screens lol Very Happy

I am not sure if there really are any risks. If it should fail you could just reset your bios at least and have only 3 cores. (Ofc given the case that the CPU does not take any damage)

My mainboard had this unlocking feature included but I still directly went ahead and got myself a quad core.

To be on the safe side why don't you just run some benchmarks and see if there are problems with the forth core? For example cinebench does a pretty good job at stressing the CPU Smile

It's gambling basically. For instance older models of Athlon triple core could unlock fourth dormant core and L3 cache. But in some cases while unlocking you'd ruin your proc... It's luck I guess.

From what I read I think that if it works you have probably nothing to be afraid of. But for safety I'd install some monitoring software to check the temps and such...

thats true you know. newton didnt discover gravity. the apple told him about it, and then he killed it. the core was never found.

I think it's running very cool at the moment, no heat from the case where before it was like a radiator with my old dual core 6400+, and zero crashes in games, will run prime 95 and a few other stability aps and see how it goes.

Monitoring temps are not accurate, when unlocking the 4th core.
