If they won't get any 'help' at 80 or 90% there won't any help at all...
If Valve expected this to run smoother and alot faster then really expected alot more than was achieveable.

No thanks, I prefer to play the game myself, not watch someone else experience the first 25 minutes... with a console gamepad at that. Wink

I personally think messing with some release countdown and such is stupid. If the game is finished, release it already, stop wasting time making some hype pub and use the resource to make the game better. Plus they use it as an opportunity to make more sales for other games, as if it would make a difference at all on the release date. I'm all for helping indie devs, but this is stupid. Sorry, my frustrated two cents.

The game has been finished 1 month ago. It's stupid to say they should release it as soon as it's done.

My guess is it will release early, but no matter what happens, it will not release any earlier than 00:01 (some US time zone) Tuesday am. Valve (or EA in the case of hardcopies?) presumably have written agreements with retailers that they must not sell the game prior to a particular date - in turn, retailers will expect that steam not release the game for purchase prior to the time that they are permitted to sell it. The compromise is, if a retailer wishes to open their doors for a midnight launch on the 19th they can, similarly, if valve wish to release it after midnight on the 19th, they can too.

EDIT: this correlates with the graph at the link posted by tskiller a couple of posts above. At the moment, it's pointing to it finishing 7 hours ahead of schedule. But given that people are focussing on certain games, as less games need to be completed, that countdown should decrease exponentially - if my mumblings above are correct, that won't happen.

How do you know it wasn't on their contract they reserve the right to release it up to 1-2 days earlier? A lot of planning went into this.

Furthermore Steam is their own store perhaps the rules don't apply there because they self publish it. For example preloading is in a sense breaking the release date.

Is playing the games even having any real effect on getting an early release?

If this graph is to be believed, progress has been nearly linear and shows no correlation between amount of people playing the games in the potato sack, and no significant jumps upon game completion.

I say it was all preplanned to release at midnight with the ARG being a ruse to sell more tater sacks.

Currently the timer expires about 4:30am EST on tuesday. If you figure the average decrease for each game so far times what is left it's pretty damn close to midnight.

19th here also (Europe) and that was always the time Valve planned it for release. However, it would've been roughly 17:00 GMT +0 before release and thats earlier now.

Are you living in some time zone that's far off GMT? My Steam still says April 19th, 1 day and 5 hours to go, which is ~April 19th 17:00 over here.

19th here (As I mentioned a while ago.) seems the above about the download version (Steam direct download or what to call it.) would have been 19th with the retail edition around the 21st in Europe (US tuesday releases and EU thursday/friday releases.), time-zone differences would have normally seen it released close to 19.00 / evening time here though and I guess other zones could likely be listed as the 20th for that reason or something like that. For a very long time the Steam unlock date was the 18th while the US retail date was the 19th.
Recently they changed the Steam date to match the retail US, but thanks to the ARG it seems it will revert to the 18th again Razz

Stores are breaking the release date even for the PC version (we already knew about the console ver):

 Spoiler:

If they are allowed to do it, then surely Valve can release it as early as they want.

Yeah, but I wouldn't be surprised if it'll take a few days to crack..

L4D2 still doesn't have a non-nuked scene release (it's been cracked by P2P though)..

But even retail steam games have to be authenticated via steam at least the 1st time, or did they change that? (last retail-steam game I played was Lost Planet 1). If so, even if they sold it months before launch it wouldn't be anything more than a preload for all intents and purposes.
