Since firmware 3.50 my subs won't show up when I watch a HD movie. I can select them, but they just won't show up. At a reso of 1920x1080 the subs works like a charm, but with a reso 1920x800 the subs won't show up. Anyone got a solution?

Hmpf Sad
Anyway to convert a 1920x800 mkv to a reso of 1920x1080 or black bars up and down? That works, but not two black bars at the bottom..

I can tell you how to convert a 1920x800 file to 1920x1080, but there is no quick way to do it, it will take hours upon hours upon hours depending on your CPU (and yours is a dual core, so it will be slow), and you will lose quality.
You best solution is to look for these BD9 releases on usenet, where they come as an ISO (or a small program that makes them into ISO) and use these with your subtitles.
Or you could convert to 1280x720 (w/ "black bars") which would be much quicker than 1080p, but still you will lose quality and will have to throw hours for the encode.

I would also suggest to try and convert the MKV file into M2TS, this might work better on the PS3. This is just a container conversion, so it will take a few minutes. However, this container does not support SUB/SRT/ASS/SSA subtitles, so you will have to convert your subtitles into Bluray SUP files (I am not sure on how to do that).

How you play your movies? I had some problems with some streaming software also but regarding subtitles i found PS3 Media Server to be the best.

Your last suggestion sounds the easiest for me. With TSMuxer I can make M2TS files from the .mkv, but doesn't do AVCHD the same? If I look in the BMDV>Stream map there are M2TS files too if i'm not mistaken. What is the diffrence then? And maybe converting the .srt to .SUP files would work. Have't tried that yet.

Ah yes Laughing you will have to forgive me, I am a little tired.

Well I think I know what the problem is, if you say they show up on 1080p videos but not on "800p" ones. Bluray subtitles are basically image files with the size of the frame, and are overlayed by the player on top of the moving picture. So what happens is, when the new image is 1920x800 instead of 1920x1080, the subtitles end up outside of the frame and player does not display them. Try using this tool to resize the subtitles to 1920x800:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/BDSupEdit

You need to use tsMuxer to demux the subtitle, load it in the tool, let it do its magic and load them again in tsMuxer to recreate the M2TS.

Thanks m8, I hope it works. I'll try it when I'm back from work.
What still buggers me is that it worked perfect before on FW 3.41 and with 3.50 not. Maybe the 3D support has something to do with it. But I hope your solution works!Very Happy

Awww :\
I didn't know it was only fixed resolutions, I just saw "resize SUP subtitles", sorry. Well you will have to look for a tool that can do this. Another way is you can OCR these subtitles (or download already SRT subtitles), and convert them to SUP with the proper resolution. But again, I have never done this, so not sure which tool to use.

''anyone updated PS3 to 3.50 firmware? Looks now PS3 doesn't refresh the area out of the actual content. So if you re-mux NC(such as 1920X800) video with srt subtitles to AVCHD, as subtitles is usually displayed out of the video conten area(at the bottom), you won't be able to see the subtitles now. ''

''Did you try with AVCHD which previously worked? If so - that's sad news, along with all the restrictions in this 3.50 firmware (like no more unlicensed USB devices/controllers).''

''No, I didn't test others as I don't have other video sources currently. A work around is to adjust the position of subtitles to make it in the video content. ''

-----------------------------
Gonna try the work around, cause you can position the sub with tsmuxer.
