now that's good. because you will see, the way to explain story, to achieve quests and even the story chapters has just been copied from GTA4. It can be nice of course, don't mind it, but even if you like both games, to call Maffia 2 a lame copy of GTA4 is so obvious.

And wrong.

I don't suppose you played the original Mafia?

Really shit? I thought the Demo was quite entertaining and I loved the first mafia. As far as I've read, it's just a little bit more action oriented than the first one, but still the same linear story telling (which was well done in Mafia 1).

The story is definitely not well done in this one. And the action is bland, boring and repetitive. Mafia 1 did a good job mixing stuff up. Mafia 2 is just bad.

It's very repetitive and the gameplay design is all over the place (a lot of things must have been cut) but it's worth a playthrough to experience the story which again is all over the place but compared to most video games it's not bad.. A bit frustrating game because it doesn't play as it should, but worth playing to the end IMO..

You haven't missed a thing. It's shit.

It's not that shit but it's nothing like Mafia 1. I would say it's a 7/10 game (yes I finnished it).

The game would be much more interesting if the missions would be something more than being a taxi driver. Also side missions and details like that would make it much better game.

+1 Agreed, even with its flaws it's definitely worth a playthrough, but it's very pale if compared to Mafia 1 (which was and still is a true masterpiece of gaming). Smile

I think that some of you should reinstall Mafia 1 and play it for a few hours. While the game as a whole is a masterpiece and a milestone in gaming history it still had serious flaws. The flaws were overshadowed by the positive aspects (story, graphics, car physics, atmosphere) but they were still a pain in the ass.

Mafia 2 had a derpy cover shooting mechanic. But what about the shooting in Mafia 1? Enemies were able to trace you through walls and as soon as you popped around a corner they pumped you full with lead with pinpoint accuracy.

Mafia 2 had some dull driving, but Mafia 1 had it too. It was just more accepted ten years ago. Today (after CoD:MW) gamers expect explosions, scripts or dialogs behind every corner. If you replay Mafia 1 you will see a lot of "boring" driving in slow cars.
To me it's not boring at all, it's part of the atmosphere.

@me7: You've made very good points; there's a thing that must be considered though, Mafia 1 was released in 2002, none of the action games of that time were able to provide such a mind-blowing experience both in terms of freedom and plot's quality (there was GTA III, but the story/characters were absolutely flat and uninspired if compared to Mafia). The game had obvious flaws (and the performance was quite horrible too) but it was "accettable" since the game was definitely ambitious. Mafia 2 came 8 years later with practically the same formula, with a worse story, a worse level design/missions and boring shooting sessions thanks to the cover system; that's why many people didn't like the game Razz

I meant to say that the shooting in Mafia 1 wasn't that good to begin with and some missions/levels in Mafia 1 were tedious as well. Most of the posts on the last page make it sound like Mafia 1 had it all right and Mafia 2 suddenly took a turn for the worse. In my opinion, both games struggle in the same areas and I give the developers credit that they tried to change the parts of the game that weren't great to begin with (shooting, all-over-the-place difficulty) while retaining most of the strong points (I'm glad that they kept a linear structure instead of going sandbox).

Shooting is much better in Mafia 1. At least it's somewhat challenging - no ridiculous cover mechanics, no regenerating health and no unlimited ammo. I remember doing the Hotel mission and was left with 17 health when the roof part started. That shit was intense. With Mafia 2 I could have ramboed my way through with blind fire.

I usually think of that very mission (and scenario) when I remember the shooting and difficulty of Mafia 1 Laughing It felt intense after I finished it (dozens of retries) but it was very tedious while I was doing it and looking back I think that it distracted from the narrative too much. Replaying that scene for half an hour isn't really exciting either.
I can imagine lots of players who quit the game for good when they encountered such parts of the game since it wasn't challenging in a good way but rather unbalanced. The game was supposed to be a narrative driven action-adventure after all.

I do agree that the gunplay in Mafia 2 should have been more exciting but the route of Mafia 1 wasn't the right one either. Nostalgia can be a bitch sometimes.
