Half life series and deus ex are the only games I see that deserve to be there, cant comment on planetscape as I havn't played it. Missing Splinter cell as I think they had a decent overacrhing story. Maybe Mass effect 1 for story as thats what kept me playing it the chase for saren was epic, But mass effect 2 story kind of sucked for me, didnt really fit the first game.

Hm, what an odd list. I can understand xenogears, and chrono trigger. But the rest? Not so much, just like it was said earlier, the fact planescape is not close to #1 brings the lawls.

Just from the top of my head as I know I'm missing a lot of them:

no The Longest Journey
no Monkey Island 1-2-3
no Day of Tentacle
no Fallout 1-2
no Little Big Adventure 1-2
no Sam and Max
no Tex Murphy games
no Fahrenheit
no Heavy Rain
no The Witcher
no Discworld Noir
no The Dig
no Betrayal at Kondor
no Beneath a Steel Sky
no Fun with Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun aka: Toonstruck
and finally and most inexcusably:
nothing written by Jane Jensen!

This thread illustrates why such a list is pointless; theres so many opinions about whats the best story, personally I wouldn't consider something like Mass Effect to have a great story, I found it to be ripped out of a book I, at the time, had just read. "Revelation Space"
Some might have criterias such as originality, setting, and what have you, where others just want entertainment.

So any list like this is pointless as long as the author makes it clear that it's the 'definitive list' "The best Stories in Videogames of All time!11eleven"
Everybody has their own list, and to them it's the 'definitive' list, but don't go around the internet claiming it as such, unless you really want to be accused of being a retard for liking the 'story' in Oblivion or God of War. Razz

Chrono Trigger didn't have a good story, have you even replayed it since you childhood? It was just really a generic cliché story with some cheesy timetravel elements added into it.

What made it good was the presentation of the story though, it had fresh ideas and had great gameplay mechanics too.

Haha, comparing Alastair Reynolds to Mass Effect. You're essentially comparing intelligent Hard SF to cheesy hollywoodesque sci-fi...

what a travesty

Comparing it? I said Mass Effect was a rip off, when was that ever a comparison.

Is Alastair Reynolds worth reading? I've been curious to read something written by him.
Any book in particular?

You are probably right on Chrono Trigger, have I replayed it since my child hood? Eh, no.

But I won't retract my statement on xenogears, great story.

Very true, but I am sure most of us can agree that this list, in general, has silly choices.

Retarded list. But imho yes, you CAN make a good "best story" list. Actually, I've seen quite a few intelligent lists from different sources on the web, and when you actually have people giving input who were born before 1990, most of the mentioned games are always EXACTLY the same, i.e. Gabriel Knight, Circle of Blood (yes, Circle of Blood), System Shock 2, Legacy of Kain, Grim Fandango, Xenogears, Final Fantasy 6, Longest Journey, Deus Ex, Half-Life, Chrono Trigger, Max Payne, Sanitarium, Planescape Torment, Silent Hill 2, The Witcher, etc.

While this is true, there are some obvious fails in that list that NO ONE could agree with. THe worst one is OOT at 1st place imho. And don't get me wrong, I LOVE that game, finished it countless times on the good ol' n64, but story??? C'mon, it had the most basic "save the princess, save the world" fairytale plot ever, very little dialog, and almost nothing in the way of narrative or character interactions.

The same can be said for Oblivion, where the huge scope of the world and possibilities actually helped to mask a pretty weak main plot.

The point is that to make a more accurate list you would have to put almost only old adventure games in there, and I guess the author didn't think it would be as interesting if he filled the list with titles most nowadays gamers never even heard of.

Metal Gear? Seriously? Any story that has a transplanted hand taking over another body is automatically banned from any kind of best story list.

well, noone mentioned g1/g2+notr, so i will trow them here.
not a briliant story by any means, but the way is "told" ingame, worth at least a place in a top. maybe not in a top 10, but for sure in a top 25.

Shit list. Period. While most of those games are great, very few of them had a notable story. Planescape 19th? Ha ha ha.
