Some of our apps at work are now between 100%-1000% faster after switching from 3.6 to 4.0

I like it. It's nice to have less bars and more room, too.
I highly recommend an addon called Barlesque, it makes the addons (and the loading page address) float at the bottom, instead of wasting space with an addon bar.

They copied of so much shit from opera and opera still beats em all. And don't let us get started with HTML5 garus -_-* Just take a look at the inputs firefox 4.0 can handle and opera can handle. Opera supports even date, url, even color and much more inputs and was the first to do so. Firefox? Oh... datelist and uhm...

Madmax click on view, then the first one and click on menu bar. Voila, you'll have the copy of opera's menu button

One large problem, found still in Firefox after so many years and in Opera as far as I know (not in IE8 or 9), is the single-process, single-threaded model. It's just hilariously stupid, but typical Mozilla to go for the worst option out there (just like not using native UI widgets, which increases load and render times significantly). There is just no excuse to have DownThemAll allocate disk space for a 4GB file and the entire browser stalls because it is maxing CPU and there is no thread management. And this is obviously felt all across the browser. Java doing some shit? Yep, all tabs crawl. Flash crashing? Yep, need to restart the entire browser.

if it was relatively easy to do they will done it already..
i think they are lost in old huge codebase, and if i understand correctly whole ui is written in xul (xml) and javascript and has same problem as for example html with huge slow javascript on beginning of page - you wont see page until javascript is finished..
but xul has advantage that anything is editable..
anyone who is running fx with few extensions and little or no customization is crazy and should switch to chrome..
i will keep my fx os which i have to run from ramdisk to get reasonable responsiveness, must be restarted to regain responsiveness, has years tweaking and tons of little non-standard things that save my time..
chrome is going in good direction and i hope in few years will reach some feature parity with fx so i can switch..
mozilla will destroy fx and it should be forked again
@natan
downthemall? if i remember correctly that is some semi-broken 1mb extension? why you need download manager in browser? if you didnt know there are irc and ftp client extensions and probably more.. maybe you should use them too :)
java? what is that? :)
flash? on windows just kill plugin-container.exe

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't IE running on Win kernel? Much easier to do mulit-coreing I guess
As for the download crawls and slow-downs, I tottally agree. It's shiiieet.
Sometimes it's not necessary to restart FF after Java crash. Guess it depends of how pages are made (not sure again, as I'm not much into developing).
