If EM announce an SDK or at least some form of modding tools (and don't encrypt the game files, like most dickish developers these days) --- AND they announce either the complete removal, or the allowance of tweaking, to the hideous highlight system; I'll start getting interested again.

This post is a FANTASTIC idea of a highlight system. Quite probably better than the original DE too. I've seen this in action on the PS3 version of Crysis 2 and it really does work.

Why is it better? I think this is exactly how DE1's worked, am I wrong?

Deus Ex's "highlight" system was four white corners surrounding the item you were close enough (they highlight DIDN'T appear until you were close enough, unlike Derp Ex: Human Devolution) to interact with. However, the corners were mapped to the physical corners of the item in question ... so a potted plant had a small box, whereas a huge desk and computer had massive highlight corners which filled the screen. The system in Crysis 2 is subtle, functional.

Highly, highly, highly doubt it.
I bet they really, really want to sell DLC.

Deus Ex was absolutely perfect from this point of view, and they ruined everything

I posted some, very crudely made, comparisons a couple pages back. The usability of the highlight system worked great in DE1. You literally had to be in "activation" range before the game told you that you could interact with it. Unlike this current bullshit where just sweeping your view across the field lights it up like a neon yellow pissing contest.

I completely missed your post , great comparisons
We should post that image at the Eidos forums and see how the HR fanboys will justify the insane decision to highlight the entire game in that way

I contemplated it, but to be honest there's really no point. People a LOT more skilled than my ridiculous MSPaint efforts have already done similar comparisons and they invariably get trolled by some dick named VectorM, and other assorted cronies. It's just not worth it. The overwhelming consensus is that people DON'T want and never ASKED for this kind of handholding crap .... but EM honestly just don't care. If they even remotely cared for the kind of audience that would be interested in Deus Ex, they'd have never made something like this a "permanent aug" feature. Unless something utterly magnificent changes my mind over the next five months, I'm rapidly starting to believe this is just a generic scifi ActionFPS/RPG with the Deus Ex name tacked on in order to generate the hype and demand that name carries with it.

Welcome... hope you'll still stick around though.
Back on topic, I thnk I'll just wait for official news. Last week's article by Alec Meer on rockpapershotgun.com, suggests that there may be an option to turn off highlighting, so I'm not going to panic just yet. |

Either there isn't one or there is.

No, they (Eidos execs) have already confirmed (that for the time at least) there is no option.
Journos played older builds that didn't have all this high-lighting implemented yet. This is why no one ever mentioned it.

Although, I really DO NOT see a reason why not to have an option to turn it off. Afterall, different people have different tastes. Not everyone likes to have piss glow around their objects/stuff >_>.

Here's what Meer said.
Quote: | Ah yes, the object highlighting: I have a vague memory of seeing an option to turn it off in the preview levels I played. I may be hallucinating, but will look into it – certainly, I don’t remember the stuff I saw seeming anywhere near as orangey-glinty-outliney. |
It's obviously that they didn't have the full-on retardo hand-holding going in the preview build he played.

Guys, guys, you're completely missing the point here!
If this DE3 is THIS easy,a lot of people will buy it and THEN Eidos will be rich enough to create a better sequel for this...right?This must be their plan...right?right?
Perhaps,DE:hardcore gamers revolution?

DE3 is using a modified version of the Tomb Raider Underworld engine.

Another interview with Jean-François Dugas. Comedy gold instances include;
*The complete lack of addressing the highlight system, despite OVERWHELMING critical backlash
*Brushing aside complaints of key features and methods used in the 1st game as "fanboy nostalgia" (ohhai2u wheatthlns)

He seems like the typical youtube/gametrailers commenter.
Obviously the bad parts he noticed was that there wasn't enough hand-holding, not enough panther takedowns and lack of third-person cover.

The game could well turn out to be absolutely phenomenal, it really could. I mean, it sure started sounding amazing lately ... but then the little niggly doubts creep it. The immersion breaking stuff like the neon gold highlighting, the jarring 1st>3rd person perspective switches, the scripted takedowns. I'm hoping I'm just being needlessly butthurt over the highlighting issue, I really am.
Guess we'll see come August - but one thing is for sure; EM aren't seeing a penny of my money until either we get a substantial demo, or I acquire my OWN demo.

As I expected the PC port is being done by Nixxes who also co-develop the engine.
Quote: | "All the design and changes to the design has been done in Montreal and sent to [Nixxes]," he told Shacknews. "We review the builds. We review and then give comments about what works and what doesn't. It's the same process. It's the exact same process, except that the programmers aren't in the same office. It's the same game and the same creative team taking care of it." |
Quote: | Dugas also noted that he, personally, is currently playing the game exclusively on the PC. |
Nixxes have been responsible for porting to the PC the following games: Tomb Raider: Legend, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Kane and Lynch 2: Dog days. (They have also ported Project Snowblind which was a spiritual sequel to Deus Ex)

Well the Tomb raider games where good ports they looked a lot better then the console versions and i didnt encounter any real problems or bugs, but its also dissapointing to hear that pc is not the leading plattform.
