Its not really subsidized, the network make a shit load out of the deal. The "subsidizing" comes in the form of tarrifs which are £20 more expensive than their sim only alternative. So actually, i'm paying £20 more per month to cover the cost of the phone. Work that over 24 months, and add to the original value I paid for the phone, the network wins - massively.

I really don't get what you are complaining about.
Nobody forced you to buy a locked Iphone. Why didn't you just buy a free Iphone from Apple and made that Sim-Only contract?
And (at least here) nearly all phones from the providers are locked. So why would the Iphone be any different?
You made a contract with the provider, knowing the phone would be locked. If it is actually subsidized or not doesn't matter, you agreed to that. And now you want it unlocked for free? Just be grateful it's that cheap. I know no other country or provider that unlocks phones for just 15 pounds. It's 100€ here in Germany for every phone, even the dirt cheap ones...

That's because Germany is a stupid country with a stupid government!
In all seriousness though, locked handsets are becoming rarer and rarer here in the UK - and soon enough I suspect it'll be banned. You pay for the handset, and you should be able to use it for whatever purpose you wish. The network shouldn't be able to dictate what you do with your property.

Then expect to pay much more then you are currently having to pay for with phones. If the phone can't be locked then carriers will likely raise the prices by a serious amount.
Again, you signed a contract and you knew what you were getting into.
And the release of the hacked baseband is looking less and less likely now, and you are going to have to wait until the 11th to find out regardless.

Why would I have to pay more? do you understand that my contract covers the cost of the phone and significantly more?
£15 per month will get me 500 mins, 500 texts, unlimited internet on a 30 day sim only contract.
£500 will get me a 16gb iPhone 4
Over two years, total cost is (24*15)+500= £860
The network makes £360 from me over those two years.
£35 per month will get me the same contract, plus an iPhone 4 16gb for £200.
Over two years, total cost is (24*35)+200= £1040
Assuming the network buys the phone at retail £500 (which they don't), then they still make £540 from me over those two years.
Now, yes technically there is the matter of interest here - I'm paying less initially for a phone the network is initially subsidising. But £180 is ALOT of interest, wouldn't you agree?
Hense my point here is that the network shouldn't have the right to lock down the device, specially when they end up with so much more money over the two years.
Hense why the gov. is stepping in.
Now, I do not see why we will have to pay "more" for phones? This is stupid - there is no logical reason. They're already making £180 more than they would if I bought the phone unlocked from Apple and just got their sim only deal. Besides, if they were to make us pay any "more" for the phone, then it would be stupid business sense as it would be better just be worth buying the phone outright.

I realize you end up paying more.
My point is that you'd end up paying more up front. A $200 phone would be $500, and I can guarentee you the phone company would still find a way to butt rape you with more costs in a new way.
If you didn't want to be buttraped by the contract you shouldn't have signed it. You should have bought the unlocked version of the phone outright from Apple. It was your choice to sign the contract. End of story.

Yes I understand that, you are pointing out the obvious. I don't quite get your point? My point was that the govt. are stepping in to stop the practise of locking phones - and that's a good thing. people like me who couldn't afford a £600 32gb iPhone 4 upfront will no longer be at a loss. And nor will the networks, they'll still get their £840 of contract out of us over two years.

Told you.
If you look at the twitter page for 'musclenerd' (or whatever his gay name is) he is making all sorts of new excuses and is now saying it will be another 3 months until the unlock is ready.
My guess is that they were saying 'wait for 4.3' entirely because they haven't found any holes in the past 2 basebands, and were hoping they could easily find one in 4.3.
Either way, they are full of shit, and I wouldn't even trust the 'in 3 months' bullshit considering they've been saying basically that for half a year now.

wow he's now claiming another 3 months? that's pretty damn weak. Why lie in the first place? For attention I assume, nothing more, nothing less. I didn't have any respect for that idiot faggotnerd beforehand, but I suspect some did.

i'd definately go up to 4.3 if it wasn't for the fact I need jailbreak. I want to use my iphone as a wifi hotspot for the ipad2 I will be getting next week - my network will charge if i use the official route, so I gotta use a JB app!

There's a 4.3 JB out now though, isn't there? You might as well stop waiting for musclenerd/etc to crack 4.3 baseband, because I just don't think it's going to happen anytime soon. You'd be best off taking it to o2 and paying them to unlock it for you. It's only £15 and it's DONE then =)

Likewise, when I had a tethered JB, I only had to reboot once in the office, and it was as simple as press this that this.
The question is, what is compelling to move to 4.3? From what I see in the "changelog", there just isn't enough meat to warrant the hassle of upgrading.

But surely using a JB increases the chance of a crash. And with a crash you're fucked right? Until you plug it in!
As for 4.3 - the biggest reason to use it is the improvement to speed of Safari. Apparently it's much much MUCH better.
