Quote:
As Take-Two makes a turn towards consistent profitability without total reliance on Grand Theft Auto, chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick stresses the importance of game reviewers' interpretation of quality.

"Making good games just isn't good enough," Zelnick said at the Wedbush Morgan Securities Technology, Media & Telecommunications: Management Access Conference on Wednesday. "I believe good is the new bad. ... Games need to be great."

It's a familiar mantra with Take-Two, which refuses to take the annualization route with its non-sports game franchises, instead focusing on a rotation of several wholly-owned, acclaimed series like GTA, BioShock, Red Dead Redemption and others.

By not tying each franchise to an annual release -- and by retaining top industry talent -- Zelnick said Take-Two's developers can concentrate on releasing quality products. And when game reviewers recognize quality, that often equates to sales and profits, he said.

"Unlike many other entertainment business -- there are just a few -- ratings by Metacritic and others' reviews really can influence the success of a newly-released title," he said.

"In fact, if your ratings go below a certain level, it can really hurt your ability to sell the title, and above a certain level can make a real difference in your success," Zelnick added.

"Our ability to have high scores over and over and over again is a huge competitive advantage, and that advantage drives sales, it reduces risk and creates profits."

Zelnick also said high review scores extend the life of Take-Two products, generating longer-lasting, predictable sales of catalog titles.

Just last month, review aggregator Metacritic found that Take-Two had the best overall ranking of 2010 for game review scores.

The executive, who took over the previously embattled publisher in 2007, said Take-Two will continue to focus on the big-budget triple-A space because it's working out well for the company. But the firm is also exploring emerging business models and platforms, including Facebook, which hosts many lower-cost games that use microtransactions.

Just don't expect Take-Two to ever give its core titles away for free in order to try to make sales off of related goods. In an answer to one attendee at the conference, Zelnick said, that'd be like "a motion picture company [putting] out a huge action release for free and let[ting] people see it for free in hopes of them buying t-shirts."

Fuck metacritic. I've never gone to that site once. Scores mean nothing collecting them even less.

Only user reviews, demo's or quicklooks so you can see some gameplay mean anything for judging videogames. Stop giving in to hype and shitty dlc marketing (see the DA2 fiasco) and think for your goddam self.

Reviews mean a lot in most areas where competition is present. Maybe not to you but i'd rather read a couple of proper reviews, watch some vids, read some comments before spending up to 60 euros on a game - or maybe even play a demo if that's available, but you can't deny that review websites play a significant role in the general public's opinion of a certain game.

the user scores on metacritic are often pretty accurate

Call of Duty: Black Ops Xbox 360 - Metascore 87 - User Score 6.1
Just Cause 2 PlayStation 3 - Metascore 83 - User Score 8.4
Dragon Age II PC - Metascore 84 - User Score 3.0

Pretty much. I just go there to check the user-average and that gives a good estimation most of the times.

Yeah sure.... you just need dedicated group of fanatics to mess them up, by giving 10s or 1s. Rolling Eyes

Downloading the iso and trying yourself is the best way.

Downloaded farcry, loved it and bought it. Loved the doom3 alpha, and pre ordered doom3 (which turned out to be a totally different game with tons of backtracking, fuck you ID!). Downloaded a cheap cam of cloverfield, watched 15 minutes, stopped it and went into cinema next day.

Best way is to see for your self and read a lot about it from different sources Smile

To be honest I actually believe a 3.0 is the proper score for DA:2. The game is horrifyingly bad, especially so when compared to the first release. Being able to dumb down a game to something this bad simply deserves something lower then 4.0.

German magazine 4players.de gave da:o 90% on PC and 85% on xbox360 and PS3.

For DA2 they just gave 70% for pc, xbox360 and ps3 and criticized that consolofication of the PC version Smile

Metacritic is useful for a quick overview of a game like imdb movie ratings.

Also, you can read the best and the worst reviews and see if the game is in your taste.

Hey Take Two yeah hi. Stop price gouging Australians on digital stores and maybe just maybe I'll give a shit about any of your products. Review scores mean nothing to me.

Nowadays honest magazines are almost impossible to find, at least here, where every AAA title receives a score >=90 not matter how good/bad it is. User scores on the other hand are usually quite correct, unless the sample is composed exclusively by console derps. Razz

http://www.4players.de/4players.php/tests/PC-CDROM/Alle/Alle/datum/0/1.html

And their highest rated PC Gamelist:

Pretty accurate I'd say Smile

But that's true!
Only fanatic would rate it with 0s and 1s, and that only in hope to lower the average score, not because it's actually worth 0 or 1.

This is also why I don't consider IMDB ratings relevant for any movie where 90% of scores are either 10s or 1s. It's just people trying to boost score one way or another instead of rating properly.

I don't liek score, so I'll give it 10 to boost it. lol wut

I don't liek score, so I'll give it 1 to lower it. lol wut
