Security Essentials found 2 threats, he cleaned them, then a restart was required, but then Vista wouldn't boot, not even in safe mode, last known configuration doesn't work, etc.
If I boot with my win7 ultimate and upgrade Vista to win7, his files won't be lost, right ? He has really important files saved on his desktop.

Well just connect his disk to yours and get the important files. After that he can format and install win7

Well, it's a laptop. Anyway, we eventually backed up most of his stuff so I will do a win7 reformat.
Unless his dvd drive fails some read in the middle of the installation. I can see it coming .....

For future reference, assuming it's a recent enough laptop so that it uses normal SATA connectors:
- Turn it off, take the battery out, flip it upside down
- Take out the (usually) 1 screw to get to the HDD and take it out
- Plug it into your PC or any external closure and get all the data you need
- Reverse process
Much easier

Also, thanks for telling me all the stuff I already know and not the actual question in bold in my original post. |
Mine was directed @ werelds. Your problem had already been solved by yourself.

I did googleand got faggy results like that one.
Well, the thing is that when I boot from the win7 dvd I can't "upgrade" because it tells me to load my OS and run the dvd setup from there. Well, that's useless for a broken OS.
And the other option is Custom, which formats stuff.
