Security Essentials found 2 threats, he cleaned them, then a restart was required, but then Vista wouldn't boot, not even in safe mode, last known configuration doesn't work, etc.

If I boot with my win7 ultimate and upgrade Vista to win7, his files won't be lost, right ?
He has really important files saved on his desktop.

Well just connect his disk to yours and get the important files. After that he can format and install win7 Smile

Well, it's a laptop. Anyway, we eventually backed up most of his stuff so I will do a win7 reformat.

Unless his dvd drive fails some read in the middle of the installation. I can see it coming .....

For future reference, assuming it's a recent enough laptop so that it uses normal SATA connectors:
- Turn it off, take the battery out, flip it upside down
- Take out the (usually) 1 screw to get to the HDD and take it out
- Plug it into your PC or any external closure and get all the data you need
- Reverse process

Much easier Wink

Edit: I have a dedicated USB stick with Parted Magic on it, just for the record Wink

Mine was directed @ werelds. Your problem had already been solved by yourself.

You could've just quite literally typed in your question in at Google and found out in about 5 seconds instead of waiting for some of us to answer (hoping it would be within a few minutes) Wink

I did googleand got faggy results like that one.

Well, the thing is that when I boot from the win7 dvd I can't "upgrade" because it tells me to load my OS and run the dvd setup from there. Well, that's useless for a broken OS.

And the other option is Custom, which formats stuff.
