30 hrs in, i'm enjoying it so far. It's more cinematic than DA O, looks nicer and the controls are way better. At least the combat feels more satisfying.
Btw, playing as a mage, are there any mage armors for the mage class? All i've found so far are robes, and they look as stupid as they did in DA O. And those looked very stupid. Asking because if not, i've been lied by the class selection screen. Also by Bioware.

Played for a while now and i'm not sure how to feel about the game. I think that the decision to remove customization was awefull, i like to change the party members armor. And i do feel that its lacking something, maybe i havn't played enough but i don't feel invested in the story, whats the big plot? This far in i feel that origins was a lot better!
Btw im also playing as a mage and just recently found out that they removed arcane warrior which is a big dissapointment!

33hrs in so far, it's a generic hack'n'slash .. but meh. I enjoyed Dark Alliance 1/2 and Untold Legends, so I'm just playing the game as I'd play those. One thing that is driving me up the wall though, and knowing my luck it's a friggin' glitch in the game or some new kind of AP built into the EBOOT, but the money aspect is incredibly limited in this. It took me 14hrs of play before I finally earned the initial 50 sovereign. Some items cost 80-120 sovereign, yet I've never been even remotely close to earning that much.

Take down a High Dragon.. guess what you get? 21 silver. Finish a massive quest line and guess what you get? 34 silver or *maybe* 1 sovereign if I'm ridiculously lucky. An entire MOB of enemies will randomly drop coin (even with items that specifically state "enemies drop more coin") between 1 and 12 silver -- and that's against 8-12 enemies. See a huge pile of treasure and gold, find 19 silver. That is definitely NOT right. Something is screwed up there.

Is anyone else having money troubles like this?

Weird, so far I've never seen any item that cost more than 10 gold (I don't care for the games monetary names; it's all gold-silver-cooper for me), even now at lvl 13. Towards the end of the first part in Kirkwall( before you go on the expedition) some quests would give about 1-7 gold. I'm playing on normal or hard, what difficulty are you playing it? It might be that.
Also, don't worry about the cash for the expedition, there will be a quest that sets you up with the cash. Just mind your quests and check your mail now and then, you'll see it.

Mate... I'm 33hrs in. Do you REALLY think I haven't done the Deep Roads expedition yet? I did that 15hrs+ ago -- and I've yet to have any quests that give you 7 gold as a reward. The largest I've seen is 3 gold and that was off an entire Templar questline that span over 3hrs of play. Hell, I just finished an Apostate questline that took over an hour to finish... the reward? 250XP and 1 gold. ONE!

I'm lv17, I've done every single quest so far. Scoured every inch of every map. Started playing on hard, saw the pathetic rewards from each one, then dropped down to normal. The difficulty of some of the later fights just isn't worth the hassle, given how little you get in reward. Oh and also had a few trophies that haven't triggered - not that I really give a toss about them, but it's more evidence that my game might be bugged to fuck. I didn't get the trophy for "spend an entire year in Kirkwall without having a member fall in combat" as well as the "Become a partner on a Deep Road expedition" -- both of which I've completed, yet no trophy popped up.

Guess I'm just unlucky that way. As always Sad

Well i'm 30 hrs in and just came back from the expedition, and done a shitload of quests before the expedition, had about 54 gold on me, but thnx to that certain quest I didn't have to use my money.
Don't know what to say, but money isn't a problem for me in DA 2 (as opposed to DA O). I'm playing the x360 version. Something seems to be messed up in your version, maybe try the PC/x360 vers instead, though after spending 33 hrs, I would flip out.

I guess I'm just unlucky, bud. For all I know it could well be some AP measure incorporated into the EBOOT .. but the release date has passed and the game even awarded me the two "on-disk" DLC items; the books that give a small experience boost. I also took that Dwarf's offer on funding the expedition for me, since I only had 47 gold at the time and ZERO quests left with which to earn more. Right now I have 58 gold and even then that's only after selling every single item that isn't currently equipped. With no more quests available to me, there's no way of earning more money.

So far I've done every single quest I've seen, only have two story quests ongoing in my log, and one side quest which seems bugged also;

"Sketchy on the details"

The log claims I've "found his hiding place and to speak to Sketchy for the reward" - but I've found no such hiding place ANYWHERE.

cool i might check it out then. debating whether or not to play through bulletstorm again. i like rpgs but tend to get bored with them from all the grinding and stuff you have to do. as long as it has a pretty good story line i can keep chugging along with it.

hmm i'll go see if game trailers has a review up i tend to agree with their ranking system.

No grinding in this, don't worry about that. jRPGs and MMOs tend to be grindworthy, but BioWhore pace their games so that you level consistently.

-edit-

Level 18 now. I'd say I'm pretty much almost done with the game, since lv20 is the cap and there are no quests after main game -- meaning, with all side quests complete and only 1 story quest to finish, I'll be done very shortly. I'll give my full impressions then, but suffice to say I am NOT as impressed with this as I should be, or as I was with Origins.

-edit-

Oh well. Guess I'll never finish the game afterall.... Lv19, beat the - what I believe to be - final boss, game immediately freezes. I've reloaded a few times, still the same freeze right after beating him. Typical bugged piece of shit from a sad, has-been, of a developer.

Delete and forget. I'm just grateful, oh so very grateful, that I didn't waste money on this POS.

Sorry to hear your game bugged Sabin.
Got no money glitches or any other glitches in my game (xbox360).

Unfortunately the game fails to impress me as well.
As it stands, it's just another action-rpg with an extremely bland story.
I simply cannot believe that the same guys that thought up DA:O (from scratch?!?), made DA2...
If someone told me the storywriters left Bioware, I would believe it immediately.
I was looking forward to this game the most, which is why I am now comencing hate (just ignore the next few alinea) :

Am I the only one bothered by the fact that that there's no visual item description? This is frustrating, especially for apparels but also for weapons and shields. Have to save every time before I buy an item and reload in case I don't like it. Ugh...
As for the DA 2 story, so far I enjoy it more than the LOTR ripoff they made "from scratch" in DA O.

I'm not sure what you mean, cobALT? Whenever I shopped at a vendor in the game, it always showed exactly what stats each item on sale had. Unless you're talking about how the item visually LOOKS when wielding/wearing... in which case; I never cared Razz

Yeah, not the stats, the visual aspect of the item. I care because mage robes look like shit in this game, and there are some mage gear that are called "robes" but they don't look like robes,(ex. Robes of the Notorious Pirate - that doesn't look like your average mage robe at all).
Also, it my right as a consumer to check out the shit I buy, before I buy it. Laughing

"Discussion on Dragon Age 2 began around this time and looking ahead I knew that I wasn’t going to be satisfied with what Dragon Age 2 would be. Party control/tactical combat are huge factors in my enjoyment of a role-playing game as is adopting the role of the hero (i.e., customizing my character). I was fairly certain Dragon Age would transition towards more of a Mass Effect experience, which while enjoyable is not the type of role-playing game I play. Could I be the lead designer on such a title? Certainly… though if I were going to work on a game adopting a set-in-stone protagonist I’d rather work on something lighter, like a shooter."- Brent Knowles"

So actually the lead designer from DA left because of the changes....

After seeing your post, I reacquired the game ... and holy shit, you weren't wrong Laughing That was definitely NOT the boss and after SEVERAL attempts, the game finally loaded past that point it kept sticking on.

... that was 10hrs ago and the game is still going. 44hrs now, tons more quests later, lv22, and wow. It's still a brainless hack'n'slash with the PS3 version being bugged to all fucking hell... but at least it's a lengthy one Very Happy

While i do really enjoy the game, you can see that EA/Bioware tried to push this thing out as fast as possible. Im 22hours in, the quests are diverse and stuff, but the environments arent. Too many cookie cutter environments like they did in ME1. And the variety of areas is lacking. I thought theyve learned from that. Its a good game, but one additional year of devtime wouldve made it great.

Like I said, I'll post my full observations when I finish the game -- but yeah, I'm 100% with you on the environments. If there is one thing that is utterly inexcusable, it's not the battle system ... it's the absolutely appalling environments. You're 22hrs in? By 10hrs you've already seen absolutely everything the game has to offer. You simply won't see anything new.

the voice acting here is a big let down, where's my femshep (or at least something of similar quality) voice?
i mean if you wanna copy me2, at least take one of the best things with it.

it really feels like venetica, cept this was somehow done by a much much bigger company, shame on you bioware!

I actually liked Venetica for what it was...but this, not terrible bad...but not good either. Am about 8 hours in now and I'm really starting to get bored. Mostly because of the tile sets, same freaking locations. RPGs used to be all about exploring interesting places, here we have a city, a forest, a cave and a dwarf underground cave....and they pretty much recycle them to death

Finished. Final game time was 50:22hrs (subtract 1-1.5hrs for loading screens as the PS3 loading is absolutely despicable - and subtract around 2hrs for random pausing and multi-tasking) and, overall, I'm not that impressed.

Story was ok but way too disjointed. Do a few missions, have several thousand cutscenes, oh look it's three years later. Yeaaah, ok then. Hmm, why do I still have the same amount of money in my purse that I had three years ago? Why hasn't the city changed at all? Why do we all look exactly the same, even a decade later? Nothing you ever did actually FELT like it was having an impact, at best people would just call you different titles as you walked passed them. Sometimes an older character would have risen in the ranks, but that still didn't change anything. Years later, everyone was still doing the same thing they were doing when you first met them. The whole "Mages vs Templars" bit was getting old at first... then you realise that the entire GAME is that. There was no epic quest like in DAO, just you caught in the middle between petty squabbles. Oh and the ending is a huge plate of bullshit and chips too. Expect the typical ME2-style million and one DLCs to be coming soon ... only, like ME2, expect 20 "armour!" DLCs for your party members and your dog before BioWhore finally release something that expands the story.

-choice and ending observations, open at your own risk-

 Spoiler:

Music was lacklustre, and sporadic, at best. Not a very memorable score at all. The voice work was great though, absolutely can't fault that - though I played as FemHawke, so I can't comment on MalHawke's voice. Sound effects? Egh, lots of clashing steel and explosions - nothing noteworthy.

Visuals were horrific. I know I played on the derpsole version, but seriously... this is 2011 and that's the BEST they could come up with? Shoddy textures, low-res FMVs with macroblocking up the wazoo, aliased edges all over the screen, disgusting framerate that hovered in the low 20s most of the time - when it wasn't stuttering and hitching all over the place - and constant "loading..." segments. The loading screens, of which there are an abundance, were..... urgh, words cannot adequately express how ABYSMAL they were. I often encountered loading screens up to almost 2 minutes in length, depending on the area being loaded, and this was from the friggin' HARD DRIVE.

The absolute biggest insult here was the retarded copy/paste for areas. Once you've hit the Bone Mines, you WILL have seen every area in the game -- all the houses are identical, all the caves are identical (oooh, we cut off this section so it MUST be different!), all the warehouses are identical, all the sewers.... urgh. Seriously, I have never EVER seen as much copy/paste horseshit in all my life. I've played Spectrum/C64 games that had a wider array of scenes. Shit, even Phantasy Star Online didn't have this many copy/paste areas. What, did BioWare just run out of money halfway through their six-month development cycle?

Gameplay depends largely on who you ask, to some it's a vast improvement over the first game, to others it's the very evidence of yet more streamlined bullshit to be shoved down our throats. I fall into the latter camp, because the only game I've ever played that is MORE streamlined than this, is Final Fantasy XIII. I kept playing because, as luck would have it, I'm generally rather partial to hack'n'slash titles -- so in the end I just played this like I'd play KoTOR or BG:Dark Alliance. Go into it expecting a deep, tactical, team-based RPG and you'll likely be disappointed greatly. Go into it expecting BG:Dark Alliance and you'll be ok. There's tons of quests (honestly, 30-40hrs worth) but in the end they're all just variations on "Go here, listen to them, kill them" or "Go here, kill them, bring back loot" It gets tiring after a while. The "choice" aspect of the game was hilarity of the highest order, typical par-for-the-course BioWare crap. NO choice you make has any meaningful impact (sorry if you consider that a spoiler, but you'll thank me in the end) as they're all designed to spit in your face anyhow. I earlier likened it to being slapped, you can choose which hand slaps you - the left or the right - but in the end you're still going to get slapped like a little bitch. It's the classic "let's play on their emotions!" gambit that, in this case, fails miserably. Well, unless their plan was to play on the anger emotion, in which case they win because this cheap illusion of choice bullshit is just that; anger-inducing bullshit.

In the end, if you just want a mindless hack'n'slash with loads of blood, tits, exploshuns, gay sex and a half-coherent story line .... you'll probably like DA2. It's certainly lengthy enough to keep you playing and it's not exactly the worst game ever made, but coming from DA:O? Compared to games like Risen, Two Worlds II, Drakensang and Divinity 2? It's a huge let down.

if you play AS a mage your sister dies and your brother lives {if you play as a Warrior or Rouge its the other way around}, so reading your review you didn't play as a Mage ... now it should be interesting how this would impact on the story

Finished it and really enjoyed it. I liked the fact that the story is more personal this time around, more focused on your character and how his/your decisions impacts a city (and eventually a bit more). Also gameplay wise, big improvements and visually it looks better. Really like the new artstyle direction. It's a good game, I kinda enjoyed it more than ME2.

So far I think the mage is the best way to go, at least I enjoyed playing as a mage more.
