Soooo Dragon Age 2 is pretty much shorter, dumber and less complex Dragon Age 1?

If you believe the deluge of opinions from folks in the PC section who've only touched the first 5 minutes of the demo which contains over-exaggerated gameplay; then yes. It's the worst thing since GI JOE: Rise of Cobra.

Highest res textures setting is limited to DX11 because of obvious use of displacement mapping which you can notice in the link posted by J. But the resolution seems to be the same between 10 and 11

I don't know, but I know for example in Civ5, in order to get best possible steaming of textures you needed DX11 renderer (for DX10+ cards), since DX9 is incapable of using "compute shaders" that were used in DX11 mode to decompress textures on the fly, in the real time (thus reducing bad steaming issue that is very noticeable in DX9 mode). I think in some Civ5 tech demo, Firaxis even said that this method reduces size of textures about 4 times.
So I guess that maybe in similar manner, huge textures are compressed and uncompressed in real time in DA2, for cards that can support that.
Now, it's possible that they were just lazy and made compute shader 5.0 version of unpacker for textures, but not one compatible with 4.0 (thus limiting to only true DX11 cards).
^Of course, this all is just a guess, but it could be a plausible reason why high res textures are reserved for DX11 mode.

Example, from Civ V: http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,776086/Civilization-5-Tech-Interview-What-DirectX-11-is-good-for/News/
| Quote: | | Civilization V uses the Direct Compute Features for a new proprietary variable bit-rate texture compression. Users will notice that on high end DX11 native hardware, the leaders will appear almost instantly, regardless of how many civilizations are present. There will also be no paging-in on the textures in the background as they are loaded since the 2gigabytes of leader textures compress to less then 150mbs altogether. This type of compression was, until recently, considered impossible or impractical, but we believe this is just the tip of the iceberg for what can be done with Direct Compute. |
Also:
| Quote: | | One big difference in the DX11 version is the terrain. On DX11, we are able to have a much more detailed terrain, since we are able to get a 4x compression on the textures. This allows us to keep most of the terrain cached. |

Yeah what the hell guys? It's not like a guy unlocked Nightmare in the demo or anything.. You only played 3 minutes with your nostalgia glasses.
You need to go to the console asylum to get the great opinions on the game like:

Maybe it's memory related. How much VRAM you have?
P.S.
You do use Win7, right?

Thanks for checking the referece. Although this feature works with any cards that can use DX11 mode in Civ5 (DX10 or better).

Am I the only one who finds the sight of so many derp icons quite grotesque? I feel kind of queesy now.

Haha, it's a pear, not an alien.

The retardo version, aka "next-gen console `gamer` simulator" is what we call "derp".
